this is my new engine project... has anyone done it??? did it work ok? valve/piston clash etc??
i'm guessing on a 1200st head gasket. anything else i need to know about
i have an astra mk2 1800 afm/ecu so it should just about fuel it ok till i can save up for a mappable ecu.

You could always pocket the piston tops to be on the safe side...
What's the benefit of the E16 head over just using the whole X18?
cost & a semblance of originality at the moment.
a complete engine is at a premium at the moment cos current ish cars are still snapping timing belts..
a std x18xe1 puts out 115hp. i reckon my hybrid with old fashioned ecu will easily do that.
I assume because he already has an E16SE so potentially there is 200cc to be gained...
i have a shed full of bits for an e16se too.
the bottom end on mine is getting a bit tired & i can't see the point in sticking another old one in.
cubic capacity is where its at, and my shell still hasn't done 12k & i don't want to start chopping the chassis rails up, so i want to stick with small block
Perfect reasoning, whats the bore size on the 1800 Mike? ie compared to the 12ST for head gasket?
actually, it is bigger, so 18xe1 gasket it is.
as mentioned, the standard x18xe1/z18xe cylinder head will flow more air than any old 8 valve 'head- cant imagine doing this will be cheaper neither..
But, originality i like..
Get on migweb and serch for tomreid's 'oh no another bike carb thread' thread. He is currently trying to single cam 8v head onto small block 1.8.
But if it was me ide stick to the twin cam , original 'head. Theyre really small anyway, paint it black or summat lol
as already said, a complete xe18xe1 or z18xe with enough stuff to make an engine run is a heap of money, even complete bare engines seem to cost big money.. i know that buying a complete car is the best way, but my domestic situation (the missus) won't allow it.
i get a short engine for £50, gaskets for 25, my spare time is free, and i get an engine for £75
a 16v one is going to be 3-400
