i changed my rack for a quick rack the other week.as has been said above it would be easier buying a new bearing(i used my old one but it was a bugger to get off!).make sure you use plenty of grease on the new rack before you put it back in and i used a pair of small molegrips on the end of the shaft that goes into the steering coloumn to check the movement on the rack.i got told to tighten up the big nut until i could feel the rack getting stiff and then back it off a little.
OK cool - thanks for the advice everyone, i'll try and source a new bearing tomorrow - anyone have any idea on what I have to ask for? ie: size? type of bearing etc?
No updates on progess, but took delivery of my expected bits

becareful as the spring inside will still be loaded
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0736.jpg
remove the spring, to find the rack positioner
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0737.jpg
remove that, with a magnet
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0738.jpg
turn rack 45° to expose bearing cover, jap in a screwdriver in the edge
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0739.jpg
prise the plastic cover off
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0740.jpg
remove circlip, ideally with a circlip remover, not two screwdrivers, twisting and mashing the circlip as it comes out lol

I then used a punch on the underside to punch out the pinion

Greased up pinion out

However, upon doing so, i've actually knocked out the end of the ally tab - is this gonna cause me problems? if so - shall I just disregard this rack an buy another now?

I presume if I call a bearing place, and give them this number, they'll know what I mean? lol
