Head bolts coming unbolt... "spiral!"

Hg was ok and looks quite new.. (making me think the guy that owned it before the nugget i bought it from did look after it and did have it rebuilt)

Pistons are dirty but look fine, no marks on them..

Hard to get a pic, but you can still see the honing marks in the bores... Are the other marks anything to worry about? I cant feel them...

Swing the engine over... Get the sump off.

This shows nicely it wasn't the sump gasket leaking...

Gasket was old and leaking all the way around..

There i moved to a bit of cleaning..

Sump and exhaust system all de-greased and jet washed ready to go to the polishers...

Boxes are ok, but i want them better and want the tubing to be mirror finished too.

System has got stained from heat and oil..

Polishing should get that all out ok...


Then moved on to my fav job.... Valve grinder in.. All the inlet side are done and cleaned, just the exhaust to do, but my back hurts.. So can wait till tomoz.

Got these today as well, from Ebay. Came next day too.. As i was missing 3, think they'll need a light polish too.. ;)

Cheers dude, and well he was a nugget. Dont think i have anything i need blasting. But get on msn and we can talk turbo re-furbs...

Good work Benn, I've a simaliar leak on the gearbox side, i'm fairly sure its the crankshaft oil seal, so thats getting sorted soon :-)

Cheers dude, oil leaks stuck. Mine got to the point when it was getting out of hand and getting everyone so needed doing. The guys that did my Tv shoot weren't happy it dipped on the floor.. And it killed a set of Mintex m1144 pads too :(

was the engine sitting before you got it?
it looks like a piston ring mark in the below picture. ill highlight it if needed :)

Looks good Benn.

When you refit the oil pump use a genuine GM metal oil pump gasket.

Martin, I don't know. I got a few bills and stuff but it was all from the guy that owned it before the guy i got it from, Lee303s just been saying the same.

can you feel anything in this picture? as the marks look "deep" in terms on engines lol. it looks like there are small rust particles inside. the bores should all be sweet like my second pic lol

Martin those pics are of freshly bored/honed engines, Your never see a used engine in that condition.

I dont know a lot about these things but can you not get it slighly bored and honed again with new rings to match? While its apart I'd deck/skim the block too to make sure its straight.

No that's is my point, cant feel anything with my finger. Had no probs with compression either..
I know how a bore will look when just honed or bored.

Yeah i can get a honing done then re ring it. I cant see why i'd need to skim it when there was no probs with the hg or anything..

Like he says, to make sure it's straight, however a steel rule and daylight also works for this :)

I am gonna check it's flatness tho.

to be fair benn i got a head from a friend he said it was a good non porous head and came from a running car,i had it pressure tested and the skim they did was very very light and to be fair after seeing how much had been skimmed i wouldnt bother,cost me £75 for pressure test and skim,if id already knew the head like you know yours i wouldnt bother skimming it its £75 better spent elsewhere in my opinion,ps keep up the good work
i also enquired about the block and was advised by the engine builder that he has only known of a warped block twice in 30 years of engine work

Yeah just backing up Simps on the fact his thinking is straight, just you don't need to go to those lengths to make absolutely sure its flat and level :p

Are you fitting a metal headgasket this time? If so they are not as forgiving as the standard headgaskets if the surfaces aren't perfectly flat.

i assume you are doing the valve guide seals whilst its apart?? as thats where the oil in number 4 will have come from i suspect, unless your turbo seals are dodgy? as for the pitting, its not ideal but not that bad at all. i would leave it but thats me, depends how anal you are lol

Decking the block isnt worth it unless your doing it to increase the CR. If the head looks alright, Don't worry with skimming it.

A hone may get those marks out, I was just being a picky ******* on msn, I'd want it perfect lol

I've been told to fit a gen Vauxhall one.. As i'm not going crazy on power or anything..(first time i've had it apart this much so)

Yep that is the reason for this, couldn't really see any other way it would be leaking and burning it off, I'm getting a bit of oil from the turbo side so i wanna get that check over while it's all off.
I wanna get the engine done right this time, i'm thinking a hone. But as it's only that one bore i'm not sure if it's worth it..

I'm being picky over everything this time tbf.

All my bores were fine Benn apart from one looking similar to yours in the pics.... My builders are very picky and I was advised to have it bored and honed because of this. Deck the block slightly and have the head skimmed. Stick a cometic gasket between the two and things should be spot on. As I needed pistons anyhow though the machine work wont cost me that much more. A set of forged pistons to match bore work however would obviously cost you a fair bit more. Depends how far you want to go I suppose! As sbs would say..... "How deep are your pockets!"! lol

Id take it to someone whom you trust for a good opinion. It would be a real pain if in eighteen months you have to go through it all again. (Mind you I bet you'd enjoy it! lol) Do the best you can within your budget Id say.

My engine is a similar spec to what you will be running Benn but I fitted a cometic gasket and arp's throughout just for piece of mind that it would be stronger. Just wish I'd done the clutch and oil pump right first time......

Is a Cometic really needed?
