What happened to that crossmember? Are the tie bar mounting locations still where they should be? Surely this is an ideal time to replace with a straight one?

What happened to that crossmember? Are the tie bar mounting locations still where they should be? Surely this is an ideal time to replace with a straight one?
the crossmember has been cut for ease of removing the complete engine i think,
I will be using box section instead of the lower crossmember to give room for the intercooler
Not the cutout the fact it looks extremely bent?
yea i see what you mean, i will be filling it after i have made a cut out.
If im not happy with it i will replace it but most probs wont as the bumper hides it for now.
I think the point Iains getting at, is not the way the cross member looks, more the fact of if its still sitting straight. Doesnt look the best, if its the slightest bit rotten id be changing it. A LET batters a Nova shell and its a hell of a common weak point On them.
/\ yes but the middle will be coming out in favor of box section
The lip at the bottom has only been left for strength atm
Hopefully welding will start place tomorrow if i can borrow a welder
Anyway, nice parts follectikn, just a case of putting it back together now!
Lovin the royal mail red wheels, reminds me of maris!
yea thats if i can remember where it all goes lol
Shouldnt be to bad tbh the bit im dreading is stripping the F28 apart to change the speedo rings.
I did think about maris's nova when i bought the red paint, i dont think it stands out to much against the grey thou, was only a quick hairy arsehole over to see if i liked it
Looks brilliant, im a big fan! F28 is tricky, make sure you remember what went where if it all falls to bits!
yea the camera is going to play a big role tomorrow if all goes to pot,
Is it best to stand the gearbox on end ( non flywheel end) when its pulled apart?
Yes, square it up so that it doesnt fall over.
Right seeing as i got the welder today (not sure how long for thou) i thought i would crack on with my front crossmember.
This is how i started this morning

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0227.jpg
Right ive never welded before in my life and there was also no one on my street who could push me in the right direction so i thought funk it lets have ago
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0228.jpg
I know thats chicken sh1t, I didnt realise how hard it was
Theres one weld here that i was chuffed with in the middle
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0229.jpg
Couple more just to prove my welding is poop haha
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0230.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0231.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0232.jpg
Made up some brackets for the bottom of the intercooler
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0233.jpg
Held it up in place with some bricks
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0234.jpg
Then mocked up the front end again as i dont want to fix the brackets until i have the engine back to make sure there is all room.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0236.jpg
Will be buying a new Gte/Sr front bumper as i wont be needing to cut out as much and it looks gash with that bumper.
Thats all for today
Joe
Bad place to have a "first go" at welding IMO! FMIC should look good tucked behind the bumper tho :)
well im hopefully going to get my mate over to weld the strengthing plates in so im going to get him go over what ive done
Joe I would seriously think about making the box section join the chassis legs on either side, with very good welds with decent penetration
ATM it doesn't look very strong, crossmember needs to be spot on as Paul says
Careful or your going to end up with a napalm special :tard:lol
Really doesnt look too bad for a first attempt, Im glad you had a go yourself and didnt make somone else do it all for you. As said though get somone to have a go and make it a wee bit stronger, would be a shame if it wasnt up to the job after so much time and effort! Keep up the work!
cheers for the comments people :) will get my mate to go over it when he does the plating kit for me,
The that leaves me to split the F28 and fit the speedo ring, its all waiting on the return of the engine
Right another expenditure (Sp?)
The machince shop has told me im going to need new pistons :(
Looking at cosworth forged atm 86.5mm but will lowering the compression ratio to 8:5:1 run on standard management?
Cosworth 2 ring?
not sure mate the ones courtney sport sell
0.7mm upper and U flex ring on the lower by any chance?Quote:

Produce less power? I've always wondered what the design would be like on an engine that doesn't do over 15k since they obviously don't seal as well. I figured there must be a crossover point where 3 ring setups work better.Quote:

Just sent a nice payment over to steve for a few bits so now wait for them to arrive :)
He sounds like the best man for the job :)
Looking forward to you actually enjoying your LET.
yea i know me to southie :thumb:
Hopefully built to last this time, needed the coilovers desperatly(sp?) that have been returned for a revamp :)
And hopefully doesnt go bang lol
Speak to Steve, but id say its worth having them pocketed, makes the CR slightly lower, so youll loose a bit of power, but gain some reliability.
Right working on this again today welding the plates on :)
Will update with pictures this evening, Just stopped to watch qualifing
Right not many pics today as i forgot to take some lol
Started off this morning Stripping back my coilovers ready to be sent for a refurb, There now boxed up ready for post.
I picked my mate up to come weld the plates on for me only got 3 on today.
Here are pics

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0238.jpg
Forgot to take a pick of the driver's side chassis leg but will next time
Whilst he was doing that i changed my lock's to the new lockset i bought just leaving the ignition to do but i cant get the bloody steering wheel off lol :(
Then i set about changing the speedo ring over in the f28
Split the box
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0239.jpg
Then i dunked the f20 Diff into boiling water to help remove the ring without damaging it. and cut the one off the F28
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0270.jpg
Then i put the box back together and tidyed up then got on ebay and ordered up some silicone boost hoses, not alot just for the intercooler so i can see if i can run the pipes like i wanted to with the engine back in,
Oh and a Alloy rad with 10" slimline fan :) is on its way to me
Joe
Right had a crack again at this this morning
I started off with the grinder with a wire wheel attachment to attact the areas where the rest of the plates need to go.
Big plate on chassis leg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0273.jpg
then cleaned up the crossmember for the plates
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0274.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0275.jpg
Did the same to the other side of the crossmember aswell
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0279.jpg
Then was underneath the car for the other plates
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0280.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0281.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0282.jpg
whilst i was doing that i had a visit from the postman with my alloy rad and also some silicone hoses
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0278.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0277.jpg
Thought i would compare intercooler to rad
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0276.jpg
Its nearly bigger than the rad haha, Think i should have got a smaller intercooler tbh
So then my mate turns up with the welding mask so made a start on the welding
Gearbox side chassis plate on
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0287.jpg
Then the ones under the car tacked in
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0290.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0291.jpg
i then attacked one of the tiebar plates
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0289.jpg
Then ran out of welding wire, so will have to carry on with them tomorrow and get them finished off.
So seeing as i was waiting for jack to turn up i thought i may aswell do some other little bits and peices as i ran out of welding wire
I changed my funked rose joints in my top mounts for lovely new ones
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0283.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0284.jpg
Some more pics of new bits ive been ordering,
Thanks to Sr Jack for my equal length drive shaft setup
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0285.jpg
Just need to get the cv's ordered up, so if anyone knows what ones im after give me some part numbers or models
ordered a new rear gearbox spacer kit from ebay (Yeltsa - which i do belive is chris astley selling bits and bobs again)
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0286.jpg
Then jack arrived with some goodies for me, couldnt resist chucking them on
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0292.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0293.jpg
Would like to thank jack alot for sorting me out them bits :thumb:
And also thank colin (novarally) for dragging a gte bumper to Nats
Cheers Joe
Looks more like a car now. Bonus on the bumper being the right colour too lol
yea i was quite shocked it was the same color as the car already, almost ashame its got damage on it otherwise i would have left it.
I reckon a quick flick over with a rattle can should be enough to cover up some of the scrapes, won't need primering
going to get the front end repainted i thinks as i need the engine bay doing now after i attacked it with a welder haha
Right seeing as i was off work for the day i thought i would crack on and get something done to my car.
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0299.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0295.jpg
Anyone spot the 2 new additions from last time?
heres all the space i have
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0296.jpg
In with the rad
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0297.jpg
looks just how i wanted really
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0298.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0299.jpg
Welded another plate on for strength for the f28 mount
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0300.jpg
Not to much room behind the grill
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0301.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0302.jpg
Without the bumper
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0303.jpg
Im going to have to get the intercooler modified i think
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0304.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/w...o/IMGP0305.jpg

And i do have to say it's a nice build your doing now mate, and it seams your throwing some dosh at it alright..
