how do you clean up the head and bits so well?
Valves bench grinder with wire wheel. Head with tfr degreaser, nylon brush, a bit of careful scraping and wire pipe brush down the ports
cheers, i will be adding all them bits and bobs to my payday tool wish list
I would get it skimmed again to make sure it's all good, you'd be surprised how much heads bow after being torqued and run. If you're running high comp I'd be tempted to find somewhere that can fly cut it and use MLS again. If it was fly cut it would have come back with a near mirror finish on it, and you would have noticed it being shiny shiny!
Also if combustion has been skipping across the block, check it very very carefully with a straight edge, clean it up as best you can with isopropyl alchohol and a cloth, NO abrasives. I suspect it will have low spots between the cylinders though.
and while it's all out double check valve seals, brake cleaner in the ports, dry the combustion chambers and look for leaks if you've not got a vacuum tester handy.
I really REALLY don't want to skim the head again. There's already no step on the edge and it's skimming into the casting marks. I remember it having curved machining marks in the head when it was done.
All stem seals have been changed. I'll spray some brake cleaner down there but it should be fine as I spent a while on the valves on the first build.
Sounds like you might need a new head if its been skimmed that much.
I can understand why you wouldn't want to want to skim it again but it needs to be right or your doing the whole job again in not so very long.
Yeah ideally I would need a new one, I might source one to slowly build up with nice parts.
I've had a straight edge on the head and I'm pretty sure it'll be fine to go back on as-is tbh, I didn't even notice anything that made me think it was blowing between cylinders until I stripped it so screw it lol
Not uprating the valve springs?
Talked to Kent on the phone who recommended the 1612 cams didn't need or want double springs. I could have got their uprated singles but it sounded quite pricey so hoping this was a freak accident
Ah ok. Crack on then.
The curve on one end of the head it starts eating into from standard height. Looks really bad when you get 10 thou into it :p Looking at the inlet valve height it hasn't had much taken off.
And I meant the valve seals, not the valve stem seals. I.E are your valves actually sealing against the cylinder head or have they moved/bent/been compromised in some way. Much more hassle to sort when the heads back on again.
Well Haynes lists a minimum height and it's under it, so I do think it's had lots taken off.
And yeah I probably should have checked these things, but I don't have a lot of time so I'd rather I have a working car than something that takes me another month to get perfect.
With this in mind I smashed the head on with a standard headgasket:

Fitted my new vernier pulleys for when I buy the tools to set them up properly:

Ran it up to temperature and all seems good:

Ooo shiny pulleys
i've a feeling iaiaiain will actually be using them properly
Pulleys are sexy. Cams in too?
Haha, you really dont mess about do you Lemon, good work and good to see youve got in back together again, been back out in it yet or is it on SORN?
Yeah Kent cams are in with the pulleys, so hopefully I'll get round to setting them up properly and notice an improvement.
Yep been out in it today Spuddy, won't be SORNing it I don't think!
Same, caned it everywhere today lol Thinking of some sort of spotlights for the dark winter nights on the lanes!
Mmm lamp pod ;)
Nice cams:) glad there doing you well nova looks good
Since the cams feel like they want to carry on beyond what the standard ECU would allow, I thought I'd raise the rev limit. Chatted to someone who sells ECU chips who sorted me out a chip for my spare ECU, with some fueling/ignition tweaks and an RPM limit set at 8,000!
Cracked open my spare ECU:

Chip is removable:

In goes my aftermarket one:

OK so 8,000 rpm isn't really a sensible limit with a standard top end! So I have this neat little unit which I have set at 7,500 rpm. Also has a secondary 'launch' limit that I've mounted via the button on the steering wheel which is a lot of fun I must admit!

"launch limit"?
Yeah it's an OMEX limiter 'with launch control'. I've got a button on the steering wheel that sets the rev limit at something I can define, e.g. 4,000rpm. So I can sit at the lights at exactly 4,000, dump the clutch, off it goes then release the button to revert back to the normal limit when the wheels have stopped spinning. Want a video? lol
yes, video of lionel at the traffic light grand prix!
Good work, throw a video up
My mate has the same omex setup on his bike carbed xe corsa, works really well and he uses it all the time at the local dragway!
geez get a video up already
Hahaha, it'll have to be the weekend I'm afraid.
Well Nova headlights are rubbish, so I've fitted some spotlights. They're not pretty but they're hopefully functional
Bumper iron modified and boxed up to the bumper:

Brackets bolted to the top:

Front end apart to wire them in, damn me running the wiring through the wing!

On and fitted:

Look interesting, i reckon they would look more at home on a mk1, kinda convincing me more to get the 'Ring - Rally Giant' spotlights that we have on the shelf at work lol
Went out for the launch control video and a little test with it earlier:

This quickly descended into chavvy louting about, enjoy lol

Then I found out my Nova could do this, so more chavving happened lol lol

Lmfao, looks like youre are rally giants aswell, how much you give for them Lemonel?
Yeah they're Ring Rallygiants. £30 posted off eBay. Can you get them cheaper?? Interested if so cos I'm kinda tempted by this:

Errr, i 'might' be able to get them cheaper (:p), but we only have one set on the shelf atm, ill look into whether we can get more, as im pretty much decided now that i want them:thumb:
Lol at your vids though, and my mates nova comes up in the 'similar videos' section after the launch test, the white J reg one top left popping flames :d
Looks like the LC works well, and better than my mate had explained it, you keep the button pressed till youve got enough momentum to eliminate the wheelspin, then let go and get the rest of the rev range/power, yes?
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo flames
I prefer the third launch lol my kinda driving lol
Awesome :thumb:
