yeah if you grind em back you'll just have a little round mark to touch up. Nobby is corect though, they are actually rivets. if you grind too far the other end of the rivet will drop out and leave a hole.

If i can free off the adjusters then i dont want/need new springs..... I'll just drop them right down...
If i cant free the adjusters then i'll just buy some shorter springs and leave the adjusters where they are.
dont build 'em like they used to..
feel you pain on the coilovers; had that issues couple of years back myself.. all new bits in the end..
Mine started to stick with a light wipe of copper slip. Used my oil filter removal pillars to get them off, then slapped copper slip on the insides the the adjuster, now they are free to move every time.
I will see what i can do. Hopefully i can free them off because i dont really want new springs.......
No, you can free them off. Leave them in to soak over night.
Will give it a go :)
I ended up using a hacksaw to get the adjustors off my old Avo's. Just cut through them to roughly where the thread is on the body and then when you try and turn the adjustor with something it will just open up and snap off.
If its anything like mine you will be left with the thread off the adjustor on the threads on the coilover body and they just scrape out with a screwdriver.
THats my last option :(
I got satisfaction from cutting them as they were the worst thing I ever bought for my car, even worse than the LET
Pmsl lol
lol Lee
Ad, as i also said mate you should be able to free them off with wd soaking etc, and i ALSO looked at your side strips on Saturday and said oh yours are clipped on! lol deff'o..
Glad your back into it, told you you would be..
Scott
So they are deffo clipped Scott, yeah you had a good look at them but dont think you reached a decision???? Or did you? lol
Good to hear you have the bug again mate.
Plans for the next phase sound good, leave the bump strips on IMO, you'll never remove the rivets without making the panel look wavey (I made that mistake on my mk1)
If i leave them though they arent going to match the bumpers, colour wise
Unless i attempt to paint them
Attempt then... Seriously I wouldnt remove the rivets.
smooth them and paint them gloss if you're gonna get artistic with it, bit different lol
100% they are clipped on and not stuck on, you could un clip them and paint them same as bumpers though, so thats a bonus IMO.
Cool, hopefully i can spray them to match the bumpers then.
Small update today, ripped the rear coilovers off, left them soak for a few hours in oil, but theres no chance they are moving. The platform now has a big groove in it where ive hammered fcuk out of it lol
So its new spring time, but unsure whether get some short coilover springs, or just get some 90mil "normal" springs and use my bare coilovers as dampers... That will give me more clearance and is less likely to bottom the damper out.
For reference, this is the rear end with 60mil springs fitted, IMO it drops my rear end about 30mil due to the weight, or lack of lol

So if i got with a normal spring setup i will need 80/90mil springs.
Also ripped the shifter out the astra, as you can see its kinked near the box end, useable for an internal shifter setup?

Cut it off! Just do it carefully and you wont damage the threads.
Go careful when getting springs for a normal seperate shock/spring setup as I tried to guess a height with mine and it ended up rather low on the back, they were 100mm so your guess is about right, but if they're high poundage they really will drop it 80mm rather than the 40-50 or whatever you're looking for as the difference between compressed and free length will be smaller.
Well if the plat forms are not shifting cut them off and buy new platforms etc..
As for shifter, you need to measure it and cut it to take the kink out of it, look in Dar, or Olly Hewitt's WIP's, or PM Dar.
Scott
I have now drilled out the grub screws so MAY have damaged the threads that platforms are sitting on, and i would need to screw the new platforms lower than that bit of thread. So probably will just go for a seperate spring setup.Quote:

Hmm, saying that though, new platforms is a cheaper option. I dont want the dampers bottomed out though when i lower it down for the height i want!! AVOs are toss for anything more than about 40mil lol
That sounds about right :thumb: Although fairly low poundage, don't forget they will need to be higher than your coilover springs due to the mechanical advantage of the wheel over the inboard position.
The Avo coilover bodies are too long so if you ran seperate springs they would bottom out at about 70mm. I got them for mine and sent the whole rear setup back in exchange for seperate shocks and springs and the normal Avo rear dampers are shorter than the coilover ones. Pretty toss.
that'll be about 4.5-5 inch free length/height..Quote:

he only needs short springs if he can't free the adjusters, otherwise he's just gonna wind it down.Quote:

he's going down in height, so either winding it down or shorter springs will achieve that, or he'll try a seperate spring/shock setup with a reasonably well "known" drop although that last bit I don't quite get as he can have 3 guesses with coilover springs before it gets more expensive than customs!Quote:

Platform stays in the same place, as it's seized solid, and the shorter spring sits on top, dropping the car down...Quote:

Both of you are right.
Benn, Mk means if i leave the adjusters where they are it wont matter, a shorter spring will just make the car sit lower than it does now, just due to the spring length....
But yes if i fit new platforms and shorter springs i will be able wind the adjuster up above the thread damage........
Oh and 200lb aint really soft tbh, standard avo are 175, and thats for an interior'd nova, theres NO weight at all in my rear end, and it currently handles v.v well on these springs. I do have some 7" springs spare, but they are 420lb rate!!!!!!
It doesnt matter now because i went mental with a hacksaw, pics on the way lol
Good to see you've still got the MK1 - sounds like it's heading for a rebirth into a proper track slag (although I notice you've still got some interior knocking about :gay:)
About your side strips, I know there's 4 years between the reg's (B vs F) , but would it not be the sames as Oli H's?, if so they're just stuck on with the usual GM double-sided gunk:
Ah, the memories........:cry:Quote:

Interior you say???!!! Where??? lol
Ok, I bow to your superior GM knowledge! ;)
Defo saw some door cards in some of the recent pics - get it sorted! lol
What else you doing to the engine once you've fitted the bodies, cams etc?

Ahh yes, doorcards and a dash lol
For what they weigh, they might as well stay! lol
No other plans for the engine tbh, unless i come across a cheap set of cams!!!
If was going to start properly spending, engine wise, id just fit a LET
Yeah Benn, get exactly what you mean. Im fitting new platforms :)
