I thought that I would let you lot in on what i'm currently up to on the Nova.
Since I haven't got much money to spend at the moment and the bearings I want for the hubs are out of stock with my local motorfactors I decided to go back to my front splitter idea.
I first decided that a front splitter would be a good idea in 2006. I made a mockup out of wood and figured out a way to bolt it to the car etc. However I didn't like how it turned out. Something wasn't right:wtf: So I put the splitter up out the way for another day.
One of the things I didn't like was how it looked. I don't mind the car looking odd in places but if it looks awful then I just can't bring myself to try it out. However the other day I got hold of a Laguna splitter(I think) and decided to see how it would look with the old mockup front splitter that I had made. Not only that but I have come up with a much better design for it. So I went to have a chat with a friend of mine who is a god when it come to car setup/design and asked him what he thought of the idea. Sometimes he just laughs at me and explains why its a stupid idea, but this time he thought it was worth a try.
So just for giggles here is the mock up, it's by no means a finished design and just a work in progress. If at the end of this it doesn't work then I will take it back off of the car, but you just don't know if it will work until you try it. If it all goes well I should have a much better handling car, I will have to up the spring rates again though.

well seeing as the rear diffuser/ splitter works so well, good on you for adding a front one!

Altho... the way you have your fueling in your bay scares me!!
In the pic i can see you can pressure cliped you braided fuel hose to your swirl pot. Now IF that came off for what ever reason surley that would end in disaster!?!?

It would indeed end in disaster as fuel pisses out of the hose at about 5-10bar unregulated pressure.
Tho its a big IF
I assume braided hose isn't meant for clamping with jubilee type clips..

Accept there is no point into or out of the swirl pot that has any real fuel pressure. You will however notice that where there 'is' high pressure its all JIC-6.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that its rubber hose with an overbraid, so it's clampable. Its not smoothbore pipe. However inside the car it's JIC-6 and in smoothbore.

As for the splitter, im dubious, but from opinions of people who have tried it, nothing but good results have been reported. So if it works, expect a similar setup on a certain miami blue nova as well lol

Fair do's if its a facet, with about 3psi.
It doesnt matter what pump you use to supply the swirl pot, it's still not under pressure. The fuel system only pressurises once it encounters the fuel pressure reg after the main pump. Feeding the swirl pot, it just recirculates once its full back to the tank under no pressure :thumb:Quote:

No reason other than you dont need a high pressure one imho. They both pump at about the same rate anyway, the only difference is the amount of pressure they can pump against. Myself and Dar just had the standard inj pump in the back anyway, just didnt make sense swapping them for low pressure variants when the inj pump would do the job just as well.Quote:

Had to put my car back together since I have got some work to do. So I thought I would show you how far I have got.
Also picked up my new front bearings today so now I can get the hubs machined and fix the car ready for testing this front splitter idea.

Enough of a gap at the rear to let the hot engine air out. Infact it will be lower pressure under the car so the air should be sucked out of the engine bay. This was before I cut the slot out for the silencer.

It looks tight to the wheels but there is plenty of room all the way from lock to lock. Although I may chop off another inch.

Things to do
1) Finish the shaping of it, including making a decision on what to do where the exhaust manifold gets close.
2) Painting.
3) Mounts.
4) Tethers.
5) Test.
Also the only part that actually gives me the downforce is the 3" lip at the front, the rest of it is for a clean air flow and mounting points. It currently weighs in at 5.6kg
If it doesn't work it will come off. However if I have to take it off I will be making some kind of underside engine cover, but out of something alot lighter.
The idea works very well, in fact had similar ideas my self
Altho i was thinking of doing the whole underside of the car
Would love it to sit really low too but keeping it level is dam hard as it upsets the balance.
Will be working on that tho ;)

The idea is to first of all do a few laps and come in to make sure the thing isn't falling off or burning etc etc. Then I will pop out again and try harder. Maybe do a few full chat laps. Come in check it all over again. Get the G meter readings and the lap times.

Same here, me and a mate have been talking about ground effects for a while, just neither of us have got round to it yet tho. We were planning on using a polyboard plastic type thing, lighter than the wood I expect, comes in 8x4 sheets. I'll fine out the proper name if your interested, possibly for future develpments...
Only problem is exhaust heat, but easily solved.

dar, if you do consistent lap times with it on or off, but pull more g in the corners, then isnt it just gonna be more stress/wear on the tyres?
Not really since if i'm pulling more G then I reckon I will not be understeering as much and therefore not scrubing the tyres, understeer kills them more because they are getting dragged accross the track. When I get more power that will help with the straight line speed but will do nothing for cornering ability. So if it corners better but dosen't get a faster lap I will benift more when I get more power. I think anyway, it's all guess work until I get it on a track and see what happens.
what kind of camber have you got on the front mate? i too have thought about a spitter/ tray under the car but more for in the event of stoping anything coming up inside the engine bay, didn't cross my mind about making it a splitter too. what kind of adjustments will you have on it? does ithave to be slightly tilted to get the air over the top to suck it down?
It dosen't have to be angled down to work. I do have height adjustment on it, but thats just for fine tuning i.e. leveling it out etc.

yeah get what you mean now, just a thought with ur front end open so much would you not benifit from either lifting the rear of the bonnet or a vent to let air going into the bonnet out? and heat keeping the enigne cooler!

Anyway all done. Here's some info for you. The bearings I got didn't have circlips with them so I had to buy some.

This is the end of the exhaust cam. The middle part is the oil feed to the now absent distributer. If its left open like shown then you will not be running max oil pressure to the cam bearings since the oil will flow out of the end of the cam easier than it will through the small holes. If the cam is in the car you can plug the hole up by cutting a 10mm piece off of a 8.5mm drillbit and gently tapping it in. Don't go too far or you will block off the nearest oil way.
Having said that I have been running my car like this for years now and it's still going. I think the pressure is low until it fills the space behind the blanking plate. However with this mod done it will be giving the cam bearings more oil from the start.

Good stuff.:thumb: The front splitter will work if you get it right tho as you say proving it maybe more difficult and will depend on how consistent your laptimes are and how well you adapt to the changes. I like the idea of checking the G:) .
Not sure the how you can do it but if you can tray the whole of the underside out between your rear diffuser and front splitter i think you could get a really noticeable difference. What about trying an adjustable rear wing touring car stylee cos your probably lapping at times not too far off the likes of the hatches they had a few years ago and they all use them to good effect? I know they can look gash but ..?:D
I hope the front splitter works CP, because I love the look of it now its all fitted :D
However my woes continue. I started to press one of the hubs in and found that the shoulder of the hub fouled the bearing carrier before the hub fitted up against the bearing. So I had to break the bearing and pull it apart again.
Then I had the hubs machined slightly to solve this problem.

Tonight when I was fitting them on the car I noticed that the caliper that took the punnishment when the hub broke has a leak where the disk bit in to the alloy. Ar5e. I will have to see what I can do to fix that.
Then I also noticed that the new hub setup sits a few mm further out than the old setup. It's not much at all, but enough to make the caliper sit off center and catch the disc. Ar5e. So I now have to modify the caliper mount to bring it back.
On the up side the hubs are on and the car will drive again. So as usuall with these things, one step forward and two steps back:tard:

So I drove it out of the garage for the hell of it and took some piccys. The brakes need bleeding and the front bumper needs some fasteners put on. But it moves again. I just hope that the caliper repair works. I can't see it not working since I think it was just the rubber seal that had gone, but you can never tell.
It really needs a dust as well.

Nice and flat underneath now. If this thing works I have someone who will be able to make me one out of fibreglass and bond in the supports so that I don't have to have the heads showing. Bust since this is just a prototype I don't care.

I do like you car Dar, it is probably my favourite in the club (as much as i dislike 2ltrs)
I think it's becuase of the colour, mk1 front end and the rear defuser. Even though you've porobably chosen function over style it looks spot on! Imo lol
