oh and some amazing work mate, keep it up :) them spot welds your driling out! rather you then me!!!!! - not read the whole thread but i've read most, and i was sent here to look at your break pedal setup as thats what i'm doing on mine :)
can't wait to see this finished :)
Well put my heater matrix in Friday night, and tightened up a jubilee so tight it creased the pipe in on itself. Wouldn't go back to being a circle:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/264.JPG
So picked up a new matrix from the scrappy from a 28k miler, bonus is I got this little bracket with it so I no longer need the cable tie:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/265.JPG
And fitted it, in fact I managed to fit it a little further back and so no matrix pipe mods were needed and I retained the flared ends! And the hose doesn't even touch the manifold, bonus:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/266.JPG
Locked the hub in position with a screwdriver and done up my front hub nuts before I forget:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/267.JPG
Yeah I know not very interesting but I wanted some advice on the circlip, does this look OK? The hub nuts are a little different to usual types:

On to today, I wanted to get my engine up to temperature. Cooling system filled with some GM coolant (ooh posh lol) I fitted up a temporary air filter:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/269.JPG
Plan was to time the ignition up too but didn't get this done:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/270.JPG
First start went badly. Running lumpy as hell and cylinders 3 and 4 were filled with fuel so potentially no spark there. Plug from #3:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/271.JPG
And plug from #2, hmm:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/272.JPG
Well I bolted the spark plugs back in and reconnected the leads and it ran like a charm, so maybe just the HT leads were loose.
Sat on fast idle for a bit:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/273.JPG
I noticed a leak from a cylinder block core plug right behind the exhaust manifold, blah. Ignored it for a bit, revved it to about 3000rpm and this happened lol
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/274.JPG
So that ended that lol Trying to fit my fancy silicone hose but its very tight between the belt cover (well, the pulley itself) and the turret:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/275.JPG
Car looks good Iain, as said earlier glad you sorted the poor running issue. I wouldn't worry to much about the leak, at least you know where yours is coming from!! Lol
Going to be fun when were out on track as you say :)
Iain, the best way to do the matrix, seeing as you already have it out, is to cut the pipe further back, and put the hose on so it joins in the car, ill get you a pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ednova/264.jpg
Good progress though!
Cheers for the tip Paul, I did try that initially but I wasn't happy with the coolant pipe going through the bulkhead with no grommet (was a tight fit).
The above pic with 3mm odd clearance is with a new matrix and unmodified pipes (achieved by mounting the matrix further back in the cabin) so I'm happy I can retain the flared ends to help stop the pipes coming off. :)
Dude the matrix pipes wont come off, there not under any real massive pressure etc, if i was you i would do it how Paul's said, as I'm sure you will still get enough movement to cause rubbing with it how it is now.
As for the induction pipe, I'm afraid thats how they are, if you if a brace it gets squashed in between the cover and turret, so unless you go TB's carb its something you'll live with.
Scott
I'll have to go ITBs then lol I'll leave the matrix for now tbh I feel like I'm making too much backwards progress at the mo :( Will keep an eye on it
By hacksawing off the RH mount lug and the original fan mount bracket I was able to wriggle the rad free via the front:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/276.JPG
Sigh looking less complete again:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/277.JPG
Having an issue removing the core plug, the bottom is pushing in and not rotating so the top isn't coming out, any suggestions? I might attack it with a dremel on the edge to relieve the pressure?
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/278.JPG
It should eventually turn iain or if you can get something between the top edge of the plug and the block and tap it down to make it turn.
Doesn't look like there's a gap between the top edge and the block, reckon just keep going at the bottom? Little worried it'll end up stuck in the waterway!
Just keep tapping it mate at the bottom its too thick to drop down or get stuck if you dremel it you may end up with swarf in the waterway which may block up a water jacket.Quote:

Find a sockut that fits in the core plug nice and tight and gently tap it back in.
Hub nut is a normal looking nut and is fine where it and how the split pin is.
When the engine moves you might find the inlet will touch the matrix hose, so do like Paul has shown, mines the same as that too.
Coarse thread self tapping screw hammered into core plug centre to start it then screw it in a little, then remove with claw hammer/pri bar or the like.
Will give it a go, have prised 1/4 of the edge from the block so hopefully less holding it in now. Will drop the exh manifold off tomorrow for more room too.
Got the exhaust manifold out the way:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/279.JPG
Didn't want to separate it from the rest of the system as I spent almost a whole day sealing it up and getting it sitting right so just dropped it off the rubbers:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/280.JPG
Yeah I made a bit of a mess of it lol
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/281.JPG
Woooooooo out:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/282.JPG
Iain 1 Core plug 0 lol
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/283.JPG
Apparently there are 34mm and 36mm core plugs and the guy at Vauxhall couldn't tell me which it would be so needed to measure the hole. Will get a new 34mm plug tomorrow and fit it up with some sealer (hylomar blue I've seen recommended):
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/284.JPG
About time.
Good work on showing that core plug who is boss!! Fingers crossed for you that it's a nice easy fix.
Got my new core plug in and the exhaust/radiator back in and plumbed up. Ran it up to temperature and there's no leaks now, winner!
Although the rad fan isn't kicking in (turned it off when it got to 3/4 on the gauge) so any ideas welcome?
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/285.JPG
Got myself a working blower motor from the scrappy and 'sealed' it on to the matrix cover I made:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/286.JPG
Shouldn't leak any air now which will be good:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/287.JPG
Strut brace painted up and fitted properly together with the horn:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/288.JPG
Also made another plastic cover to hide the wiper mechanism:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/289.JPG
Picked myself up a Corsa EPAS ECU to go with my column and have ordered a manual controller so when that arrives I will wire it up and hope it works :)
cool stuff..
the rad fan; you say it doesnt kick in (come on) but then say it '(turned it off when it got to 3/4 on the gauge)'
so it does come on, but doesnt cool the engine then switches off..?
No I turned the engine off myself when it hit 3/4 on the gauge. The fan doesn't come on at all (unless I bridge the rad sensor plug in which case it does) - but it's a new sensor so am ruling that out.
Does the fan come on if you bridge the switch wires?
Edit-Thats a yes then. So either the switch is faulty, or theres an air lock or something so that part of the rad isnt getting warm.
ah ok, my bad - as ad says, though if youve done any crimping/solering anywhere along the earth wire of that loom; worth checking.
The thermostat bleed hole has rounded off (the one bolt I didn't undo for no reason during the entire rebuild lol) so whats the best way to ensure there's no airlock?
i thought if you remove the cap from the expansion tank, run it up to temp then it bleeds itself ?
yeah^ thats how i do it. 3/4 may not be enough on the guage for the fan to come on
I normally do the cap off thing, But couple of times ive needed the cap on to get it to bleed.
i would leave the cap on .
to build the presher up
sound's very much like a air block or a faulty part is the stat new?
Yeah stat was new as well as the rad temp sensor.
Looks good, shouldn't the brake line run under the brace?
Heater looks good.
you still got me on msn were talk about it on there
thanks kev
Little more work done, I have modified my Corsa EPAS ECU with a 'RallyWiz' controller unit to allow an adjustment knob on the dashboard for sensitivity:

nice glove!!!! lol lol
It's cold OK? lol
live in nottingham ?
using gloves ?
i bet its not even your car your 'working' on there is it lol

Filled, bled and the pedal is nice and firm now, awesome!
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/294.JPG
Only two small leaks, both from the metric-imperial male-male bits on this bugger, but tightened them up and its spot on now:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/295.JPG
Was worried these rear banjos would leak too but they're spot on:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/296.JPG
With that done, I adjusted the handbrake, its so nice playing with clean and rust free parts!
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/297.JPG
Only remaining brake issue I have is my flexi is rubbing the short driveshaft on full lock, any suggestions?
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/298.JPG
turn it 180 deg :)
Fitted up my EPAS ECU and wired it in to the car:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/299.JPG
Massive maxi fuse for the large +ve wiring:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/300.JPG
As far as I can tell it's working spot on and adjustment via the control knob is working too!
Misc. task, I was gonna fit my cambelt cover, got some new ones of these from Vauxhall:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/301.JPG
Only to find the thread has stripped in the head on the top one, d'oh. Suggestions?
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/302.JPG
And also modified my dash to suit the killswitch, just need to find somewhere to mount the fusebox:
http://iainel.co.uk/images/forums/NovaWIP2a/303.JPG
Cool thanks I'll try that tomorrow.Quote:
