Good to know your going smallblock. Should be fun.
Best case senario would be a sccr small block box but they are just as expensive as the big block sccr so thats out of the question for now, in the long run i still think the f20 has more chance of survival than the f13 or 15 but we will see.Quote:

About 10psi. As said before, I think the actuator diaphragm has had it. It was spiking much higher so spent all summer driving it on part throttle to stop it boosting too high.Quote:

Saturday started with the servicing of my new daily (its a passat 1.9tdi 130ish bhp 4motion) and the attempted fitting of a tow bar, this how ever didn't go according to plan as it was the wrong one for the vehicle model and i only realised after removing the rear bumper etc
Then i got on with some much needed garage clearance that continued into sunday morning with a trip to the tidy tip included. So with some free space and a clean floor i continued from were i left off only with a slightly different plan ahead of me this time.
Pic pics!
Here she is after a clear up believe it or not

Here is the new turbo 'dry' build sans le internals, this still probably isn't the finished article as i may use a fiat coupe turbine housing instaed of the saab item as its the same .49 A/R but has a more convinient V band fitting for the exhaust instead but you get the idea.

The comp cover is from a ball bearing unit and will flow more efficiently compared to the standard T25 cover (this is use full given the fact i'm upgrading the comp wheel)

Compressor cover A/R

Then there was their first introduction to each other
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DPP_0019.jpg
Needless to say they are getting on very well lol
Then i had a little play (as you do) just because - this will go here erm some were

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DPP_0021.jpg
Possibly not this way round though, i will have to wait until i have the engine fitted to be sure where the best possition for the turbo will be - hopefully i will be able to collect the engines next wkend! woop woop!
In preperation for the arrival of the engines i needed to get at least the rear end back on a set of wheels so, i rebuilt the rear brakes and set about making some make shift suspension for the rear (its amazing what you find to do the job when you look around the garage) these were part of a dog bed!
two hollow poles with a bolt welded in the top and a hole in the bottom and bobs your uncle!

and on the car
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DPP_0016.jpg
I purposly made them uber long so i still have loads of room to get under the back end if i need to with out removing the wheels and jacking it up etc. Its like a 4x4 now.

I like the new anti roll system, should get some awesome load transfer in cornering with that setup lol
Yer but the centre of gravity is a little high atm lol it will work perfectly for what i want it forQuote:

Good to see you working on the car again mate.
All this turbo stuff is all new to me so this thread should be a good learn!
Like the shock idea, was what I had planned bit with some inch box I have laying round.
has to be said again that your shell prep is awsome just notised the gussets on the struts.
lol nice rear shocks!
Glad to see it again though mate, crack on..
Cheers chaps i'm glad to be back on it too! Simps this will be a learning curve for us all trust me!
Benn PM sent.
Plans sound spot on. Be interesting see what the outcome is of a turbo'd 1600 16v with custom manifolds on it and not cast/modified std ones.
TurboGav for the manifolds..... ;)

Progress from this weekend :)
Last weekend involved a lot of driving lol i drove home from Bournemouth to Bedfordshire on fri night then sat morning i started out early and collected a couple of x16xe engines from Ayr in Scotland (Thanks again Jamie :thumb:) making the journy back down south sat afternoon/evening to see John H in Stoke on trent to collect some more parts (cheers Boss nice to chat again) and finally back to Bournemouth on sunday evening!
However sunday morning/afternoon i did find the time to unload the van and put an engine in the nova!
This is the first time in over a year that the engine bay has been home to an engine, here is what i started with:
An empty engine bay
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0001-1.jpg
One spare engine for parts and to use to mock up the new manifolds (this one will be fitted into the car for the time being)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0002-1.jpg
One good engine to be rebuilt and actually used in conjunction with the new turbo in the car
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0003-1.jpg
The spare engine fitted to the spare small block gearbox just for mock up purposes (any one have any idea how to identify this gearbox? it has no markings ie F13 F15 etc in the usual place?)
And arn't these small blocks light i can just about carry one on my own.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0004-1.jpg
I dropped the tie bars down to make way for the motor
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0005-1.jpg
And shes in
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0006-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0007-1.jpg
Feck me is it small or what...look at the space around it
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0008-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0009-1.jpg
And with the rad in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0010-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0011-1.jpg
Then i put the bottom of the inlet manifold on just to gauge space to the back of the engine, again loads of room which is nice :d
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0019-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0020-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0021-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0022-1.jpg
Content that there would be loads of room for the new custom inlet i set about moving the rad about, to see what space there would be for the turbo and exhaust behind the rad.
First off i centred the rad so that the intercooler pipes can fit either side, some trimming of the front panel will be needed.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0023-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DPP_0024.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DPP_0025.jpg
And the view from behind with the rad in its new position (the rad is centred and moved forwards a little)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DPP_0026.jpg
i did try the turbo behind the rad but photo bucket wasn't as happy as i was with those images so it has deleted them
Once i was satisfied with the spare engines temporary new found home i decided it would be rude not to crack on with the rebuild of the other 1600xe so i mounted it on to the engine stand ready for the strip down to commence, but a cup of tea distracted me.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0014-1.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0013-1.jpg
The small block looks alright to me
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...DPP_0017-1.jpg
Here you can see the start that some one has made on an inlet manifold for some bike carbs that came with the engines.
The bike carbs are off a kawasaki zzr1100 and are 40mm in size if any one is interested in purchasing them - pm me if so
Today following a trip to Benns last week i got on with cleaning a few bits up at work (dejavo i know), anyway I started with these - rusted to fook
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DSC00580.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DSC00583.jpg
Then i removed the the unwanted bits
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DSC00585.jpg
And slung them in the degreaser then hot wash then blasted leaving the hubs and bearings in place as i don't need them (i'm upgrading) and couldn't be @rsed to press them out.
Bling bling
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DSC00587.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DSC00588.jpg
And finally a coat of acid etch to protect the bare metal while they are away being machined again
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DSC00590.jpg
Hopefully some more progress will follow next weekend - Benn see your wip :thumb:
no worries James! Glad you got back safely and good to see the engines being put to good use.
Cheers, Jamie
cool stuff mr james. welcome to small block club n all that..
Wow! Those hubs came out well! Can you put whole houses into this hot wash thingy? lol
Good busy weekend James with some good progress. HUGE amount of room in there!
Do I spy a speedline mistral slipping into the photo....
sorry to sound dumb but whats the extra parts welded in on the front turrets for ??? i have had a quick looked through the thread but can seem to find anything lol
Those hubs did come out well but a house is a bit much to ask (any one else want anything doing? lol), i was happy with what i got done considering the amount of travelling i got through, i was even happier with the amount of room around the engine for manifolds and pipework!
Oh and yes the mistral its one of my now 6 strong collection (they are the 15 inch variant) i have had the first 4 for ages, since the days of my blue 1.7 td van
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...0220081031.jpg
no messing :). surely you could of got hold of some engines closer though lol
lol i don't blame you for not noticing what they were for you would have had to try hard to find it in 180 pages of cr@p!Quote:
