Red oxide is always a good idea on fresh welds as it proctects them from oxygen reation with impurities (sp?). Also the quality depends on the source of the paint.

Red Oxide better than Grey Stripe?
I normally use Acid Etch primer if I go back to bare metal on panels etc.
Acid Etch is fine, it shouldn't cause any problems with fresh welds done on a gassed mig, but I believe there may be a reaction with any slag left from a fluxed core weld.Quote:

Havent checked this thread for a while. Youve certainly been getting on with it.
Good welding in the boot & in the engine bay. Are you going to stitch the chassis legs to the floor too?
Cheers craig. Yeah, that was one of the last jobs he did.
The progress made this weekend has been awesome, im extereeemly pleased to say the least! Got the shell back from Lee (who has made an awesome job of the welding, despite being thwacked on the swede by a large piece of plant machinery). Anyway, we dragged the car back to Dars garage, and proceeded to get on with sealing the bottom with Shultz front to back! we then began to prep the shell for paint. In proper track car style, we were ready in about an hour including the masking lol!
Dar brandished the spray gun, and proceeded to rape the poor shell with primer, working front to back.

At this point, it has to be said that, while walking back from outside grabbing a gulpfull of fresh air, my back popped in style, and i was instantly crippled! Why, i have no idea, but suffice to say i had to call it a day and drove home in a lot of discomfort, expecting the whole weekend to be written off! Back home, i ladled on half a tube of deep heat, and slept on a hot water bottle, and luckily, i woke up with just a dull pain which was more than bearable. So back to bristol I went and we proceeded to finish off the priming, and then start to lay on some colour. This is the only part of this particular job I can get credit for TBH as I LOVE the colour, it is exactly what i was going for, which is what the bumpers and skirts will end up painted in too.

After 2 nights work, a bit of N64 Mario Karting and a lot of effort on Dars part, this was the result..

And this is the guy I have to thank, King Dar with a spray gun!! Thank you buddy, i owe you a big sloppy one!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...P/DSC00045.jpg
Anyway, we dropped the car back to the unit and i was back on my own, so thought id better put my back into some graft before the day was up, so first i decided to fit the tailgate and bonnet ready to get the pins fitted properly before theyre painted. Firtst job was to remove the hinges from the old tailgate and screw them to the new one..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...P/DSC00060.jpg
Got the lights in so i could line it up properly..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...P/DSC00062.jpg
Next on the list was fit a nice ally bar where the front panel used to be..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...P/DSC00063.jpg
Then i got the wings back on after bashing the lips back (didnt take too much care as i still intednd to get FG units made up), re fittted the headlights and slapped the bonnet on
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...P/DSC00067.jpg
Last on the list before i called it a day was to rebuild my freshly painted pedals and re-fit them, as well as the brake servo...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...P/DSC00065.jpg
Bear in mind the graphite paint is a pearl so the flash bounces off it at odd angles, making it look patchy.
Next on the job list is to chop the loom down and re-fit, remove the rear beam to freshen it up, as well as the lower arms which need boxing, and pick a new fuel tank up from Stupot. Got no money left until after chrimbo now so the engine wont be going back in for a while :-(
Once again, a huge thanks to Dar.
looking spot-on lee !! its coming together now, altho i always struggle rebuilding stuff after ive stripped it lol
hopefuly ill be seeing it in the flesh next year at some (hopefuly all) PVG track days :thumb:
lee, how easy was it too remove the tailgate hinges from the old tailgate?
it was pretty easy, just drilled out the spot welds and smacked it with a screwdriver and hammer! I then made the holes oversize to give some adjustment when re-fitting.Quote:

Popped up to Stuarts on Wednesday which aquired me a new fuel tank, some ally chequer plate and some bonnet pins! Thankls bud :dankk2:
Well, back in the garage after a week or so of lazyness, and i can feel it too, im aching like a biatch today! I had the fun task of removing the last of the stubborn nuts and bolts holding all the front suspension on, but after a lot of huffing and puffing, got it all off. That enabled me to get some paint on the tie bars, and get the TCA's ready to be welded into corsda style box sections.
I also decided to get the bonnet pins fitted, which means i can now remove the bloody bonnet and tailgate which were starting to get on my tits when trying to do other jobs! Also fitted pins to the front bumper, but decided against the rear as I cant see any reason for them due to it being fiberglass. I appear to have got all the panel gaps pretty much spot on so im quite chuffed!

Next job on the list is fit the fuel tank (might do that today if I can be ****d) and remove the panels and bumpers for painting. I also need to scrape some funds together so i can fit the engine!
Looking good, however I will annoy you by saying that your car will now fold in on itself because you cut the slam panel out. Im bored of hearing it myself about mine lmfao
lol, yeah, the whole cars structure is held together by a piss thin bit of bendy metal! You have to laugh!
yeah well thats what all the "top" people on my local krooze site think, they reckon that because their dads uncles brother 3000bhp skyline has got a 5 inch think solid titanium slam panel which is part of the cradle for the engine. And therefore my corsa must obey the same rules, all it does is hold the bonnet down an it doesnt even do a good job of that lmfao. Also removing the plastic inner arches means that when i boot it the turrets fold in together.
good progress fella, starting to get there :thumb:
I know its only a track car BT but I really think it deserves a cool exterior to give it some grace in all the pics & videos of it at track sessions.
What do you suggest then matey? No vynal cos its too heavy fpmsl.
TBH i think you'll like how it'll turn out, it'll be more striking than the blue one anyway if all goes to plan.
paint it matt black, stealthy  :thumb:
Nah, everyone will think Im Baxter!!!!!
Always fancied Jamaica yellow:thumb:
i doubt it, for a start i reckon you might get this one doneQuote:

BT,
Don't forget to give me a shout the next time your heading over, I always have naff all to do on Sundays, and many Saturdays too thinking about it.
, i love watching re-build(wip) threads, looking good bud, keep up.
It is staying the same colour as it is now, but there will be a few extras. Just have to wait and see lolQuote:

Bt, when reshelling what do you tell ya insurance company? or by reshelling do you just use the reg plate of the "new" shell youve just got, because a reshell looks liek its on the cards for me but i love my reg number "k48hwr" ?
BTs is a track only car so doesnt have a reg, think you just change the chassis number on the V5, in your case the V5 of K48 HWRQuote:
