i would second that f20's are rubbish ate 4 f20's with my corsa let before i got fed up off changing 5th gear and swapping boxes and stuck an f28 in there and the best thing i didnt have any more g/box related problems
Yeah i didn't think it would last 5 mins under load. I'm watching an F28 on ebay at the mo, will have to see if funds permit it lol
Had another good night of progress last night, didn't leave the workshop till 2am :tard:.......
The wiring is now finished only thing to do is fit a switch inside the car for the first gear switch, then i double checked over the water system and vacume pipes, sorted the fuel pump so that all works now.
Also had to make up a new filler neck as the standard one was cut when it was in the paintshop.
We ended up butchering a D reg Ranger Rover for its filler neck, cut it down to size and joined it to what was left of the original nova one.
Its not the nicest looking thing in the world but its out of sight and does its job nicely.

Next was the pipe work form the intercooler to the turbo, was a bit of a squeeze but it finaly came together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2092008150.jpg
With that all done it was pretty much ready for the 1st start up, by this time i was kacking my pants big time lol
I've been a bit worried as its never been run before that it wouldn't work and all the time & money i put into it was about to go bang.
This was mainly due to the fact that the bloke who built the engine originaly and who was spose to fit it is a tool and has a track record for funking up jobs...... Happened to 2 friends cars he had worked on while he had mine, it was the main reason i ended up taking the car back and getting it checked over by someone with a better rep.
Short vid of the 1st start up, exuse the smoke we dropped a little bit of oil down the bores to lube them up a bit as its been sitting for so long.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...008006-001.flv
As nothing ever goes smoothly it started pissing water from the thermostat housing, on further inspection the o ring is knackered.
Needless to say im over the moon, its been 3 years since its had a running engine in it :D
Im hoping to have the last of the loose ends tied up by the end of the week so it can go for an mot some point next week :thumb:
Hose looks kinked on the intercooler?
Looks like a tidy build, bet you cant wait to have it on the road
cheers bud...... I think the angle of the pic makes it look worse, it is ever so slightly kinked but dont think i can do too much about it.
Not had much chance to make a great deal of progress over the last week. I've got to get a new oil feed pipe for the turbo, so thats halted the plan of getting it running again
Decided to lower it a bit more as it looks like a scared cat. I've had what i thought was a set of 60mm springs sitting about for ages so i thought i'd give them a go......
Before with 40mm springs

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0092008161.jpg
After with 60mm springs
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0092008163.jpg
And one with some extra weight on the rear
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0092008162.jpg
Looks as if theres plenty of clearance but won't know for sure if theres any rubbing untill i drive it.
Will get some pics of the front up tomorrow hopefully, we sheared the head off one of the shock bolts so decided to give up for the night.
Untill next time......... cheers for looking :thumb:
Got it back down on its wheels this morning, quite happy with how it sits.

Does look good mate, what size are those 'loys ?
Cheers mate, they're 18"s. Borderline tractor stylee i know but i like them lol
Looks good :)
Nice, liking the huge wheels lol
Keep it up mate, im in the same region as you so i may meet you some time soon.
Cheers mate, hoping to make it to some meets once its done.
Thats a tidy Nova. Not keen on the 18's mind.
Have been toying with the idea of fitting the sideskirts for a while.
Personally im not sure on them as they take away the wide look, but on the plus side it does make it look like it sits lower.

Any comments welcome, im still in two minds
they do look good but trap mud and moisture so i would leave them off
Got a bit bored last night so i fitted the headunit to its new home.

Found this really old photo on the computer think its from 1999, would have only just brought it when it was taken. Mines on the far right.

Looks good mate, fit the sideskirts :)
Had another good nights progress tonight, fitted the new braided oil feed to the turbo..... No more oil leakage, shame the same cant be said for the thermostat housing o ring lol
Thought it would be rude not to give it a little run, seemed to idle alot better than last time. It was hunting to start with and almost died a few times but it cleared after a minute or two.
Took a short vid....

Will have to sort the brakes out and get a slimline fan sorted next so i can take it for a test run :thumb:
is it all finished yet mate
Not quite finished yet, only another week or 5 lol
Nice Nova project you got there m8.
I'd like to see it in the flesh because it looks really nice in the pics. By the way, fit the side skirts. Looks really cool with them on.
(Off topic ;) )Other thing, we should meet someday, as i'm living in Bishop's Stortford aswell to have a coffee or something and talk about the Novas, as i got one in Portugal which needs some updates. If you prefer, i'll send my mobile number by pm to you to arrange something (and to see your gorgeous Nova)

Looks lovely mate, what make brace is this?
Cheers bud, yeah sounds like a good idea. Not really had the chance to meet anyone of here. Your always welcome to come up to my workshop, theres a couple of us up here that are well into our novas lolQuote:

Jeff, i got the strutbrace from ebay a year or two ago, i think it was made by MPS performance.
I've not tried to fit it since i've changed the top hat so im not sure if it's going to fit, if not it will be for sale :thumb:
Have a look here - www.mpsperformance.co.uk
Thanks mate, JeffQuote:

So this evening i've mainly been chasing fault codes and replacing sensors along the way  Great fun, faults so far....
13 - Oxygen Sensor (O2S)- no Voltage change -
31 - Engine Speed (RPM) sensor - no signal
49 - Battery Supply Voltage - high
92 - Camshaft position (CMP) sensor - incorrect signal
94 - Camshaft position (CMP) sensor - Voltage high
So far i've replaced the lamba sensor and camshaft position sensor, next job is to change the alternator and "borrow" a crank sensor of a mate. Hopefully should cure it :thumb:
Another small update....... No more fault codes, changing the alternator seems to have done the trick and turned the ecu light out. Insted of there being 12v at the battery there was 16v.
Also changed the coolant temp sensor as it was overfueling like a good'un, instant improvement in how it ran. Idled steadily without any spluttering and didn't reak of fuel.
A little bit confused as to why iv'e got no rev counter. Im using the lcd clocks from an astra gte (same ones used when it ran the xe) When the ignition is switched on the clocks do their thing and it goes up and down, so i know the display works. The green wire is going into the back of them but still showing nothing once its running, would a knackered crank sensor be causing this??? Any ideas/info muchly appreciated :thumb:
Thanks in advance Kev
camshaft sensor didnt know let's had them! lol anyways good project this like the car and for some reason the flip paint and the big wheels work really well if it were a normal colour probably wouldnt work as well as it does! thumbs up love chasing fault codes
Has been a bit dead today at work so i decided to to a bit more on the car.
Fitted the brake servo back into place ready for the new brake lines, going to make a start on bending them up tonight. Seems as if i've saved all the ****hole jobs till last:wtf:
Fitted the strutbrace aswell, turns out its nice fit :thumb:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...7102008245.jpg
I need to come and see this somtime. Looks awesome.
Whats left to do to it?
Cheers mate. Not much left on the to-do list now, mainly purchase and fit a slimline fan, replace the brake lines front + back and stop the exhaust from blowing.
Then its just a case of tidying up the wiring, finding somewhere to mount my guages and putting the dash back together again. Once all thats done its pretty much ready for an mot.
I have the opportunity to see this Nova in the flesh and i can guarantee that this one is one hell of a Nova (and i only saw it stopped...i can imagine when it rolls out of the workshop ;) ).
Kev, keep us updated with all news about it and keep it up.
OFFTOPIC: Nice to meet you m8. You're the one. Hope to meet again in the future.
Cheers
You too matey, your welcome anytime. Good to see you've got a project tread going aswell :thumb:Quote:

Small update......
Found myself a fan, got straight around to fitting it as i still haven't run it up to temp yet. It sat ticking over for a good 15-20 mins with it blowing and it sat bang on the half way mark of the temp gauge. I've also got a 7" bike fan which i'd like to put on the other side of the rad just to make sure. All seems to be well :thumb:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5102008257.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5102008255.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5102008258.jpg
Im hoping to be able to take it for a test run by the end of the week so next on the list of random jobs was to finally fit the front panel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5102008252.jpg
Next is to secure the bonnet.....
Plan A is to use the original bonnet catch and release as im not too keen on bonnet pins or cutting holes in the bonnet. My only worry is that it wont line up properly and the bonnet will sit either on the wonk or too high.... In a worse case scenario both lol
Plan B is to source some flush fit bonnet pins and take it back to the bodyshop and let them do the cutting. Quite like the idea of these as they are lockable and wouldnt look too bad.
Will have another look at it tonight.
Random pic of it back together at the end of the night...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5102008249.jpg
Looking as good as ever.
Well, i may choose Plan A because of the cutting to to the bonnet and the exclusive paintwork you have on it.
When you get it ready, i'd like to see it rolling on the road.
Cheers
Another update.....
After 3 years it finallly moves under its own steam :D
Finished the brakes off last night and then spent this morning checking over everything before i took it for its 1st outing.
Short vid of the 1st steps.....
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...008020-001.flv
The rear needs raising as it scrubs on the arches, just about to fit the old 40mm springs to see if it makes any odds.
Going to look into some stiffer rear shocks i think.
Next is to get it ready for an mot, hopefully wont be too long before its out.
Random pic.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...6102008273.jpg
Its still not on the road lol ....... Had an issue with the pressure relief valve being stuck open.
Spent most of sunday trying to fish out the relief valve but it wasn't having any of it, so i decided to get a new pump.
That arrived today along with some new oil and a filter, so hoping to have it running again by this evening.
Thought i'd post up some progress of a couple of other novas that belong to a mate who shares the unit with me.......
First off is this one
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008295.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008296.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008299.jpg
It started out as a poverty spec 1ltr Trip and as you can see from the pics was mid xe conversion.
The plan is to remove the engine and fit a 1.3sr lump into it, replace slam panel, fit replacement wings, change bootlid, fit a very clean sr interior into it, give it a damn good valet and eventually sell it.
Engine out....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008302.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008305.jpg
Replacement engine
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008309.jpg
Next on the list
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008300.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...3102008301.jpg
The plan for this one is to fit the xe lump, swap suspension with the spax kit on the white one, fit new front wings, possibly a gsi front bumper and more than likely a respray.
To be honest i think he should keep the xe in the white one but i guess the van is a bit different.
Will post up some progress as it happens :thumb:
