update for yesterday,
seemed to have gained a couple of friends behind the car...
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02634.jpg
they are now deceased.
onto more progress, had been laying on my back all day stripping the underseal off from the rear of the car. must have been 4/5hrs in total. it had paid off tho as i managed to get it in primer and put seam sealer on.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02632.jpg
todays progress, stripped all the underseal from the front section of the car, got it in primer and put seam sealer on. the rear is now in underseal. just got to paint it and it should be done.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02635.jpg
heres the pic of how i joined the rear feet back on. substantial?
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02631.jpg
todays update, finished off undersealing the car. also did the lower half of the sill too. this is the first coat.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC02636-1.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC02638-1.jpg
then gave it the first coat of hammerite, took soooo long. will be doing another coat tomorrow, depending if it snows or not.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02641.jpg
bought the rest of the parts i need to finish off my cage. one sleeve, 2 door bar brackets, some more stainless cap head bolts and some button headed allen bolts
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02640.jpg
positioned the door bars in place, cut them to length and welded them all on.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02642.jpg
then onto where i cut the front section in half, put the sleeve on and punched where the holes should be. drilled them out and bolted it up.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02643.jpg
current state of the car, still looking sorry for its self.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02648.jpg
will be taking the car back to my garage in the next week or so. hopefully get some bodywork done before i do.
untill next time.
What underseal did you use? Didn't think you could paint over the usual gooey stuff.
You can but it takes a good few coats.
im using an underseal made by comma. dries matt black and has a rubbery texture to it. great stuff. theres a picture of the can a few pages back.
managed to get out to the car again today, so put another coat of hammerite on underneigth. gave it a hoover and general tidy up awell. hopefully look like a car again sometime.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02652.jpg
Good times, are you giving it a 3rd coat?
unfortunately yes, takes about 2hrs to do and almost the whole can(750ml) of hammerite. so got to get another can.
Good work dude, i hate doing things like that, my neck was killing for days after i did mine! lol
had today off work so did a bit more on the car, was at the autosport show yesterday and ordered some bushes and braided brake lines from rally design. should arrive by wednesday.:)
gave the underside another coat of hammerite, should be enough i reckon.
then proceeded with stripping off the soundeadening from inside the car. came up easy with a heat gun.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02657.jpg
then went about fitting the rear beam. got it all in place without the springs to start with, then fitted one of my irmscher softstars that are normally fitted. when i went over a bump, the o/s/r wheel would catch the arch. so i heated up the paint on the arch then hammered and dolleyed the arch lip flat.
all was ok with the wheel now, but ive encounted another future problem. ill be running coilovers and i imagine these will hit the wheel. i run 205/40/16 tyres so will have to get some 195/45/16's for that little bit more clearance.
can someone measure up the diameter of a rear coilover, pretty please.:d
with not much else that i could be bothered with, i welded up the indicator hole on the o/s wing. gave it a little filler.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02659.jpg
will have a little update for tomorrow id imagine.
Will the insides be blue this time?
When you put filler on it really should be on bare metal.
Yeh, all will be blue and under the filler was metal, was trying to blend it back in with the existing paint level
cracking project mate :) im building a LET nova at the min aswell.... you have gave me a few ideas for mine! nice one, keep it up!
just read the whole thread good work mate :D will be nice when finished, keep up the good work :)
cheers guys.
todays update, isnt much but every little helps.
done some more work on the wing, kind of happy with the finish, but im sure it could be better. will let the bodyshop sort it if they arnt happy. ran out of masking tape so couldnt do a decent square to prime it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02669.jpg
started back on the engine bay. got as much as i could done. have run out of sanding discs so couldnt do any more. have got the main lines of the filler sorted on the inner wings. will have to get some finishing filler to sort the imperfections. gave it a bit of primer to give it a more uniform look, even though it will be coming off again to finish it all.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02671.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02670.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02672.jpg
welded up the old loom hole aswell, need to find something small that i can grind down the welds with as the space is very tight. any ideas?
bruce
Multitool/dremel for sanding/grinding in a tight space?
yeh that might work, cant find a decent one for less than 20pound though. seems a waste of money for a one time job. have got a die grinder at work but thats air powered.
will see what i can get hold of.
Good times :)
havnt updated this in a couple of weeks due to being busy and the weather cold, so heres a small update.
got on with removing the doors, did the common trick with the bonnet stay and in 10mins they were off.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02710.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02711.jpg
have now put the doors into storage until i need to work on them.
then set about removing the headlining, came off pretty easy, except for the roof handles being a pain to come off.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02721.jpg
had a bit of a play with my intercooler recess, was real untidy so got the grinder out and smoothed it off with that. gave it a bit of filler to help it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02713.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02726.jpg
ive decided that ill strip all the paint off the inside of the car to save rubbing it down as that could take hours to get it smooth with it having many layers of paint on it. i started using nitromors as i presumed this would be the best stuff, it just takes so long to work and doesnt always strip all the paint off. only other stuff i could find in halfords was cellulose thinners and doesnt say it would strip paint off. so will have to hunt around for some stripper/thinner that will aid me in a quicker strip.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02714.jpg
bruce
Good work dude, wherr are you running the battrey cabling and bits? As theres no holes in the bulk head at all...
What are you doing with the head lining?
as the battery is being mounted in the boot i was planning on having the cable/s come out lower down the bulkhead. ive seen on yours that your rocker cover breather goes into the bulkhead and down the inner wing to hide it, im most likely going to have to make a hole back in it or figure out a different routing to hide it. i got a bit eager with the welder.lol
with the headlining i am buying the one wilson_sri had for sale recently, which will hopefully go with my leather seats and flocked dash when i have that done.
update 14/03/10.
progress has been slow, had to repair my vec as the steering rack had burst. hasnt set me too far back though.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02731.jpg
im still on bodywork and paint stripping atm with the nova.
decided to have a go at fitting my new rear panel, was getting fed up with it lying around and the fact it would cost me to get it fitted. reason im fitting a new one is because it doesnt look good how it is so want it to look tidyer.
this is how it started off, somebody had previously replaced the rear panel with a piece of sheet metal. whoever did the job didnt want it to come off, ever!
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02667.jpg
went and got my mates 9inch grinder and cut the majority of the old panel out, i then tidyd it up using my 4inch cutter. some of the metal was a bit worse for ware so i cut it out.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02732.jpg
this is the new panel, its a pattern part but fit doesnt look too bad.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02734.jpg
placed it up there to get the idea of how it fitted and to see what id have to modify to fit it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC02744-1.jpg
after a while i got it somewhere near, fitted the tailgate back on to make sure its in line with the catch.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02756.jpg
offered up the rear bumper to ensure that lined up nicely aswell.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02749.jpg
once all was ok i welded on the panel, i then ground down the welds and started smoothing out the panel. still got to sand the filler down.
i had made one error though, i only ever checked that the tailgate closed on the first click of the catch and not the second. when i came to close the boot it would butt out on the c pillars. to get around this i got a block of wood on the inside of the panel and used my trusty hammer to massage it outwards. the boot now closes perfect.
following on from the previous page i was still trying to find an easy solution for removing all the paint from inside the car. i went and bought a 80grit sanding disc for my angle grinder. it does a decent job, much quicker than a knotted wheel for the grinder. got the boot area and the rear arches down to bare metal.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02733.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC02780-1.jpg
put a bit of zinc primer on it to stop it rusting until i make it a bit smoother and ready for paint.
around the tailgate where the seal and headlining had been holding moisture, it had got a bit crusty. wire wheeled it down and used kurust on these areas to sort it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02755.jpg
recieved my poly bushes and braided brake hoses a few months ago, forgot to update this. also bought some copper brake pipe ready for when its been painted and parts powder coated.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02698.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02689.jpg
hopefully see some decent progress soon.
untill next time.
bruce
Nice progress mate, good work on the rear panel :thumb:
Looks like bushes from rallydesign ;)
Yes they are.lol. I see you've got the same ones. ;)
yep lol
Good work mate, keep it up!

cheers biller!
update for this week...
my headlining from wilson_sri had eventually turned up. loving the feel of it and cant wait to get it in the car. should go well with my leather interior.:d
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02825.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02826.jpg
drove down to newport (s.wales) to pick up a front gte bumper off will f. top guy, had a good chat with him and he was kind enough to show me his track slag. awesome car i must say so. also saw his latest project which looks great on the ronal turbos.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02824.jpg
onto the work ive done on the car. finished off preping the inside ready for primer. as the rear of the car will be on show when its all finished i paid great attention to getting it smooooooooth.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02804.jpg
heres all the paint and primer i bought. not the most expensive of paint but will do for the inside.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02794.jpg
my hand crafted masking paper reel. lol
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02796.jpg
got onto masking the car up, ive got to admit im really bad at masking up, but i got it done.:)
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02805.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02806.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02808.jpg
Nice update Brucer. Where did you get the copper pipes from?
i then mixed up my primer to the correct ratios. i was advised to use a coloured primer as it will give a better look once the basecoat is applied.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02811.jpg
got busy with the gun and it came out like this.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02815.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02817.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02818.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02819.jpg
fairly happy with how it came out. next weekend ill wet sand the back end to make it ultra smooth then give it the basecoat and possibly laquer.
bruce

25ft. you want brake pipe? its 3/16th you want. the 8mm or 5/16th is for fuel lines.
fuel lines is what I want. brake pipes are already new and copper.
cheers will, wouldnt call them sheds. lol . was good to see a reputable nova, even though it was in hibernation. ;)Quote:
