the cross section through the rods is an H shape, it gives the rods a greater moment of inertia for a given mass to reduce the deflection without increasing weight. Or in this case to reduce the weight and I'm sure increase strength/stiffness!Quote:

If you have a plastic ruler its easy to bend when it's flat, but impossible when it is rotated 90deg along its axis (balancing on its edge). The ruler still weighs the same but the mass is further away from the centre.
