thats the 1300sr lump that will be going in the nova. It is going to get all cleaned up/painted. The blue rocker cover wont be staying on it. I have a weber 32 twin choke carb to be fiited and headgasket kit.

i have a few questions that i hope you guys can help me with.
I want to clean the sr engine and get the bottom of the engine black/silver and the head/rocker cover in silver. What paint should i use and where do i get it?
When i am putting new spark plugs and leads on, how do i know what order they go in? if i buy brand new leads will they tell me what plug to put them onto or can you tell by the length of the leads?
I would like to paint inside the arches but want underseal stuff on them and to protect my new splash guards. What paint/underseal should i put on? where do i get that? Also do i brush it on or spray it with a spray gun or will i need a special underseal spray gun?
Thanks
Greg

I have been really busy again today, i have stripped the sr engine down and took all the old gaskets off and i have washed the gearbox, rubbed it down with sandpaper and wire brush then primed it. It looks miles better even with the primer on it. I am getting paint tommorow for the block and the head/rocker cover. The block is going black and the top end of the engine is going nice shiny silver. All the manifold are in the middle of getting ready for painting. After the exhaust manifold is done it will be getting heat wrapped.
Quite chuffed with what i have done today!

i have a wee list of parts to get in the net few days.
black hammerite paint,
rocker cover gasket,
sump gasket,
exhaust outlet gasket (broke in 3 pieces when i took manifold off),
Should get the engine finished by the end of the week.
The guy that is coming to weld my nova is going to be coming up later on in the week so should be finished next weekend. Was hoping to have it done by wednesday but cant help it. The front end should be welded and painted and put back together and engine in running in 2/3 weeks. Starting to really feel as though i am getting somewhere with this project. Will take pics of the engine etc tommorow.
-
finally finished painting my engine tonight and i think it looks really good. I have also done the gearbox and all the linkages and engine mounts. Looks miles better! Sorry about the picture quality, it was taken from a phone.

looks very nice greg, good work :)

my dad is going to buy me some gaskets in the next day or two. I need to replace the rocker cover gasket and the inlet and outlet manifold gaskets. I will be doing the headgasket and valve stem oil seals at some point aswell so should i buy a complete head gasket kit? How much does this cost roughly?
-
-
looking good mate, keep up the good work, engine looks sweet.
-
just bought a complete head gasket set for my sr engine. Only ?19 inc VAT!
What can i do to my carb to get it a little bit better? Is there a cleaning/refurb kit for it? Its a pierburg twin choke.
-
the guy that is welding my nova has been really busy lately so he hasnt been to weld it together. I cant complain though as i know it will get done but his job is more important than my nova just now.lol. It will be welded before the end of the week.
Anyway, i have put the new front panel in place and built all the panels back on etc to see if it is going to line up and it does! Its all ready to be tacked on with the mig! cant wait! I need to go and buy some black spray cans? I am going to prime the whole front panel and engine bay with rattle cans.
I am also in the middle of fitting the new gaskets etc and cant wait til the engine is put in. Its all coming along nicely! I have a small problem though. I am putting the sr twin manifold on with the twin down pipe but where the middle section of exhaust joins onto the manifld is rotten away so i need to weld it togethor or buy a new exhaust system. Might just go and buy a janspeed/ashley stainless steel exhaust with a 4 branch when i have a bit more money! Pics will be uploaded later.

what engines that?? is it a mark2 astra?? or is it just a different dizzy? lol
-
its just a 1300sr engine.

thats my nova front panel welded on. Just need to weld a plate on where it joins to the new panel from the inner wing and 2 small plates welded on where the metal bumper brackets go. Then the front end will be complete.
But, its the inner wings/seams on the engine bay that are worrieng. Whats the best way to weld them? Do we run a seam weld along then plate it?
-
yes, i know its very rusty before someone tells me!lol
I have managed to get the front panel/crossmember all welded on and finished but last night but need to seam weld the engine bay and round the suspension turrets and plate it up. Also need to weld 2 more plates on which will not take long. Here is some pics-

just read from the first page nice progress :thumb:

thanks!
right, the next job is to paint and rust protect the front end/inner wings/engine bay. I have completly scraped all the old silicone sealer stuff off the splash guards/inner wings today and rubbed them all down. New splash guards will be getting welded in and the seams will be getting stitch welded and a few plates welded here and there.
After the welding is done i want to paint the whole lot black. I would like to paint the inner wings/front panel/engine bay with black rattle cans from the local motor factors but need something to protect the rust coming back. I will put seam sealer over all the welds/plates. Is there a clear paint or something i can put over my nice shiny black paint to stop the rust coming through in the future? Cheers

i am welding my new splash guards in tomorrow and then going to seam seal the whole lot. After thats done i will paint the front end.
I also need to buy a complete set of brake lines. How much are new brake pipe sets complete?? Would i be better to put braided pipes on?how much are these?
-
-
-
yes thats what i am going for. Obviosley the bumpers will go black when the whole car gets re-sprayed. Need to buy a new set of copper brake pipes and braided hose to replace the rubber pipe that goes onto the calipers etc.
Then i will be getting the engine bay finished and engine back in. I am aiming to have it back off the axle stands and engine in and running soon. Then i can start worrying about paint and better brakes, interior and finishing touches. I am going to spend my money on getting it legal and through a mot first then if i have a bit of spare cash i will go on and buy extras!
-
go for the Mk1 but with clear indicators :)

going to have the mk2 gsi on first then maybe after a while i might bolt the mk1 stuff on. (only takes half an hour).I think the mk1 will look good when its all lined up properly and sitting on the ground. I will have the mk1 and mk2 bumpers/grille/wing all painted black to match the car.
-
should look good -- can't wait to see it out on the road
we'el need a mini meet of some sort :)

well, am getting rather annoyed now. not done anything to this for weeks. Just sold my other nova so i have got a fair bit of cash to spend on this nova again. Going to replace the brake pipes this weekend then get the engine fired in. My aim is to get the engine in and running by my school holidays in 2 or 3 weeks. With the money i got from my old nova i should be able to get her ready for the mot.
-
-
you done real well on it, at least you got time on ya side to get things done, i recon it looks a lot better mk1 tho mate

yes sold BGA! sad to see her go. It was nothing special but it was my first motor and i learnt so many things by having BGA. (how to drive and take it apart and fix it again)ha ha. also i had a good year autotesting with it, never missed a beat!
Think i might go with mk2 to start with but have the mk1 bumpers etc sitting all painted ready to swap them over if i fancy a change. (i have plenty paint) 3 and a half litres.lol
-
sure it will look good what ever way u do it :)
Vaughan!
