Benn /\ my reasoning. If you check back at the start of my WIP, you'll see that the engine was in front of the car with the slam intact, I didnt put the engine in that w.e. The following w.e I cut the slam as I was having problems with my crane.Quote:

that roll cage i want so badly hehe nice project pal
Mine has a removeable slam panel, hard to tell though.
Never had any problems with strength on it either but I have overlapped two panels slightly.

You could drive a nova round without a slam panel center and it would be no different.
orite ok, sorry benn:thumb:Quote:

small update, doesnt look like ive done too much but has taken a few hours of welding and cleaning up etc. started to fill up any holes in the engine bay that shouldnt be there, inner wings and firewall mainly.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02505.jpg
still needs alot more work but have started so thats a good thing. will hopefully get a lot done this weekend.:)
also mounted my reat strut brace too, will be coming out again but gave me something to do while i waited for the filler to dry.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02502.jpg
also brought the car out of its hiding hole, dont think ive had the car fully out in months. will need to take all the glass out and doors/tailgate off at somepoint.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02506.jpg
have got a new rear panel to replace whats on there atm, was thinking about doing it myself but who ever welded the sheet of metal over the rear did it so it would never come off....will get the new one fitted when i have it sprayed.
updates at the weekend hopefully.
thanks fo looking
I'd weld the seam around the turret too dude.
That should have been done when the chassis plating was done, will rep you when im on a computer for spotting that.Quote:

now, id like to blend that seam in with the inner wing, will normal body filler be ok or should i use some bumper/flex filler?
bruce
Use normal bodyfiller, If you can get it use black flexi fiber glass.
who makes that benn?
Smc, yellow tin, i use that's over all welds for smoothing...
nice one, will have a look and see if i can get any.
small update. had the day off today so started work on the nova at half 8 this morn. got a couple things done, hoovered it all off and then removed the steering column and the pedal assembly. didnt take pics as its fairly boring.
left my garages at 10 so i could go collect my new n/s wing from offplot (chris). met him in newtown (mid wales) where he works as its closer to me than where he lives. had a chat with him for a bit then paid him for my nice new genuine early mk1 wing.:d.
on the way back through the country life i stopped off and took some pics of my vec, nothing special but gave me something else to do. here they are.

anyway, got back to my garages and tried it on the car, seems to fit ok.:thumb:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02530.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02531.jpg
after this i did some small jobs, removed my rear quarter windows and the tailgate. also removed any other small bits of trim that needed to come out.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02539.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02540.jpg
jobs for tomorrow are to take the windsreen out, the doors hopefully and then get it up as high as i can on axle stands to strip off all the underseal to re-do it.
after alot of thought on what to use i will be using comma underseal, dries rubbery and isnt tacky/tarry. so this then will be painted on with blue hammerite. thats the plan anyway.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02519.jpg
at the top of the strip is stone chip and at the bottom is the comma stuff. cant really make it out but you get the idea.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02520.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02522.jpg
will hopefully update tomorrow.
thanks for looking.
bruce
OMG that Vec has no wheels!!!!! lol
have started to strip the car of all underseal now, have so far only done the o/s arch. this has taken me a fair time for stripping off the old underseal, my genny is having problems again but think im on the right lines of fixing it.
i took it all down to bare metal
then gave it a dust coating of etch primer as i heard this is vital for it to etch properly into the metal. then another coat on top of that.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02561.jpg
once this had dried i seam sealered all the seams
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02554.jpg
after this had dried i gave it a two coats of comma underseal, once its dried it goes a cool matt black colour:)
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02553.jpg
then proceeded with two coats of blue hammerite.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02552.jpg
atleast thats one down, got my old bumper down from the rafters to inspect it. like many old gte bumpers it dips in on the right hand side if you can see it, ive heard that if you heat it up/put it in a hot bath it will go back to the original shape. anyone know if this is true? can imagine it wont do it with the filler on it so will have to dig it out.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02559.jpg
thanks for looking
Etch primer promotes the paint to strip better to bare metal, if your under sealing its not really needed.
WHAT etch is always a good idea on a nova its used on bare metal as it ETCH'S in to it and sticks better than say high build primer. The acid forces the zinc down into the top couple of molecules of the steel and helps stop rust from getting any worse.Quote:

If your undersealing straight over the top it really wont matter.
think i still will etch before the underseal, at least its two more coats after the metal.
Taking off the underseal in the front arches took me ages so I know your pain! Good work tho dude - keep it up!
great project :thumb:
Good progress dude, something I have been meaning to do for a wile on the Nova, get her bulletproof underneath.
That comma underseal, is it any good?
thanks guys.
yeh id recomend it tek, id say its the best stuff in a rattle can. can put it on fairly thick and it dries with a firm slight rubbery texture.
great work mate keep it up.I took off all my underseal last year.It took me ages and i was layed under it on axle stands so really can appreciate how much graft your putting into it.I found a hot air gun and an inch wide chisel were the best to remove it.Good luck.
Andy
Nice sounds like what I'm looking for, I want it to be dry rather then sticky/tacky. I've used Waxoyl Schultz in a rattle can (black can) that's also good and gives a slight lumpy finish bit like stone chip protection. Gonna keep the underside black anyway. Don't think I'm gonna striip off the original stuff, just gonna clean it up well and inspect the underside and inside of the car for rot with a screwdriver and hammer. Any areas that need buliding up will be done so and then a full coat over with protection and waxoyl in all holes.
back again, the car now has been moved over to a friends farm due to complaints from neighbours about my genny. the progress has been alot better as i have more space and power on tap, unlike genny.
just like the previous arch i stripped it all down to bare metal, etch primed, seam sealed, undersealed and hammerited.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...2558Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...02561Small.jpg
with the urge to get it done and back to my garage, this arch only took me 2 days compared to 2weeks like the other one.lol.
have near enough completed the n/s/r arch. have only got to hammerite it and it will be done. i gave up on the o/s/r arch today as my bulb blew in my light i was using and the temperature was 1.5degrees!! will go out there tomorrow and hopefully get it done.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02578.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02576.jpg
have then only got the underside to sort then.:d
Nice progress dude. The underside is the hard bit :)
Looking good dude.
thats why i left it untill last.hahaQuote:

picture of test assemble in my garage. its obligatory.lol
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02590.jpg
on with removal of the old cage, which is now for sale.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC02605-1.jpg
put the rear half of the new cage in, didnt surprise me that it didnt fit. the cage is made for a nova that hasnt got a sunroof or a headlining. no biggie.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC02608-1.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...DSC02606-1.jpg
cut the front feet off with plenty spare to adjust correctly, welded in the spreader plate that makes a small box section behind the front seats. positioned the cage to how it would sit in the car, cut the legs to length and welded them back on. The rear feet wouldnt sit correctly either, cut these off and used the inch and a half i cut from the front legs to over lap and join the rear feet back on. welded the spreader plates onto the back arches too.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02617.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02620.jpg
the cage didnt come with bolts for the rear cage feet so i went and bought some nice allen headed bolts, bolted it all down then.
once i got this done i fitted the front section, i placed the dash in position to make sure it misses.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02610.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02613.jpg
welded in the spreader plates for the front section and bolted it down.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02623.jpg
all i have to address now is where the front section was cut in half, im thinkining about joining it just how the front and rear section connect as it will be so much easier to fit when i come to fit it all again. the cut is where the drivers sunvisor is.what do you all think?
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02611.jpg
also the door bars...i presume there too long so they can be cut to length when you've decided where you want them. where do i want them? like so?
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02624.jpg
im missing 2 of these.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02627.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC02626.jpg
these ones are to be welded onto the rear section of the cage for the door bars, the front section has a smaller diameter tubing. might consider fabricating them but knowing me theyll come out poo.
thanks for reading
ive got some o the cage brackets if after any? i went for a 'x' door bar when building mine.
How are you planning on finishing the cage mate? With a brush or mask up the headlining?
Phillip-that would be tidy, just need 2 of the smaller door bar tabs/brackets(think 40mm ones)
Graeme-unsure yet of either powdercoating or have it sprayed when I have the car done.
Its got to come back out anyway.
Good work on the cage dude, I'd add some bracing to the legs where you've cut them. (more so the rear legs) Are you welding in a rear strut brace too?
Il try get a pic of what ive actualy done to the rear legs, might be sufficient enough but will show you incase.
Ive got a big bolt in rear strut brace. Had fitted it a few pages ago I think
how come you didnt cut the spreader plates from the bottom of the legs and then cut the vertical legs to length then weld the plates or new plates back on so you dont have a join line round the leg and it looks like its meant to be that length?
also what is this car being used for with having this cage in?
Also lol you can get what they call slip joints which is a piece of tube that is a perfect slide over the tube and then bolt through to secure it and that would probably work for the front where the sun visor is, il try find a pic for you to what i mean
Edit:- here is the link for the joint you want, its only £12 http://www.customcages.co.uk/roll-ca...-in-sleeve-kit
