DIdn't this fad start in the US? Basically imitating the prisoners because they were not allowed belts due to the risk of using it as a weapon or to kill themselves with? So their trousers were always around their arses?

i was always under the impression that the big trousers meant the person wearing them had them handed down over the generations and as a result the bigger the trousers the bigger the brothers and you know not to mess with them.
