There is the citroen zx td volcane, which is basically the same car but without the streetcred so is usally cheaper and you should pick up a better example. Just my opinion as alot of 306 d turbo's are overpriced.

I've had quite a few 306 D turbos in the past, if looked after properly they will go forever!!
My last one threw a rod out the block which wasn't pretty, but then again it was running at 30 psi of boost!!
Things that go wrong:
Bearing in back axle - can be prevented by putting grease nipples on them and keeping them well greased, but probably too late to start to do that at this stage of their lifes.
Wiring loom into doors can break leaving no central locking and electric windows, pain in the ass, and door has to be removed to fix.
Drop links and "P" bushings on bottom arms tend to go quite often, cheap to get, and not too bad to replace.
Back axle bushings can go around the 100k mark, these are about £80 from memory, back axle has to be dropped out to fit.
Head gaskets can be a problem on the XUD engines, I always ran mine on pure coolant/antifreeze and never had a problem.
Also watch out for DIY heros screwing the pump and turbo, google is dangerous in giving people a false sense of knowledge!!
Avoid HDi's at all costs, bundle of scrap! Nicer driving car, but love doing in crank pullies and fuel pumps!!
Here is the pic boyle_46 was talking about, burst the intercooler open and had a load of fuel and no boost!!!

Can be made to go reasonably well for an old 1.9td. Here's my blue Phase 2:

Why Not Try A Rover 200 Diesel They Are Faster Than The D Turdo And Nothing Seams To Go Wrong With Them Ive Had Three And Have Tried To Kill Them All And Just Wont Die
Very Reasonable Price Now Too
i sold my nova for a 306 hdi due to family commitments
not a bad car would still rather have a nova over one though lol
also if you do go for the hdi check the bottom pulley its prown for going knackered as ive just realised with my own lol
Thanks. I am viewing one tomorrow so will bear all the tips in mind.
Might make a checklist lol
i think...bosch fuel pump = ok for chipfat
