Unfortunately I don't have the Nova in order to test that.
Finally I made a cover for the pit today, there's a bit of work still to do to finish that, but it works well. I made it out of a sheet of aluminium honeycomb;

look at Honda civic rear door handles I think they are plastic too so should be light weight
