lol, its unreal how light it is, i pushed it to the back of the workshop today with one finger lol

Anyway, after a days hard work, we finally got the new one fully built and ready to rumble!

But on a serious note, it was a kind of 'commitment' day, as the original plan was to leave the stripping of the blue one till absolute last in case i was nowhere near ready for next season, but due to the lack of space because of before mentioned sh1te that hadnt been taken away, space was begining to run out, so i took the decision to rip it apart. Shame to see it in such a state, but hey!

Then I hit on a problem, seeing as i have such a useless engine hoist, how do i lift the car up high enough to drag the engine out from under the car? I pondered for a while, whilst smoking a ciggy sat on the forklift truck which is parked in the barn............. Then it hit me!!

Last job was to grind off a piece of the floor which holds the gearbox mount on, as it wasnt coming off the conventional way. Ill grind the mount off the piece of floor at a later date

Tomorrow, i just need to remove the fuel tank, and it can be taken away to be crushed lol

Wouldn't it have been easier to just lift the block out the top with the forklift? I wondered why you hadn't used it on the new shell as it's clearly viable in the first photo of the unit.

Much easier to drop an XE out the bottom if its still got the box attached.

And theres a perfectly good reason why i didnt use the forklift earlier.......

Cheers pal. Cage is ordered, should be here in about a week and a half, so im up there tomorrow prepping the seams and de gunking the floorpan.

I was up the barn again on wednesday, just to finish off some little bits, when i decided to get my screwdriver out and have a little prod at some bubbly bits of rust on the front panel and inner wing. Im kind of wishing i didnt, because i opened up 3 enormous holes and one small one! Just goes to show what you can miss when your concentrating on making sure the structural metal isnt rotten! So I went off on one and luckily, these were the only bad bits I found on the whole car, so Today, I went back up there armed with a pot of P40, some filler, and a tin of Waxoyl :biggrin:

Heres the offending holes after I had opened them up to bare good metal!

Out comes the fiberglass, and with the help of some wire mesh, plugged the gaps!

A bit of the good ole filler, a bit of sanding, and I had a pretty good result.

Slapped on some Waxoyl behind the repairs, and thats another job out the way. Ill finish the repair behind the headlight when the weldings finished and Im ready to paint the bay up.

An I did consider a a new front panel, but the rest of it looks like new on the back, which is odd, and also, its a track car, and you have to draw the line somewhere at how much effort goes into something that you could stack into the tyres at any given loss of talent :biggrin:

Cage should arrive at the end of the week, so the welding can begin!

if your welding anyway why are you glassing the holes, theres 20 mins welding to do those properly

Was going to but ive got nothing to do on it till the cage arrives, so i thought id glass them instead to keep me busy. Im not sure what you mean by 'properly' as theres nothing wrong with a glass repair in those locations.

Plus, Fiberglass is lighter :thumb: lol

Gotta agree with geoff though, i'd would've welded some plates over too whilst you're doing the rest of it. But hey thats only my opinion!

Sorry John, stickers are gone, took 5 minutes with a fudge wheel which everyone believes damages the paint lol

Im probably going to weld a plate into the headlight surround after giving it soe thought, but the bottoms are fine and if i do stuff it, the last thing ill be worried about is a few small bits of fiberglass falling out lol lol

Fudge wheels are great! When I was younger I had a saturday job in a garage washing cars. I'd often be found in the bodyshop hiding in a corner sniffing on a fudge wheel like it was poppers or something! lol

The usual choppage craig, as well as fiberglass tailgate, bonnet, and hopefully wings. Spare wheel wells coming out, and we'll probably do an oli, and drill loads of holes in it lol

Some of it will wait till next year though, as I cant afford side mounted seats at the mo, and im not chopping out the centre strenghtener that runs accross the car until ife got them.

Today, as we've pretty much run out of things to do until the cage arrives, we decided to start getting the Dash into a shape that we wanted. I recently bought a little Dremel Multitool, and it rocks! Its already been great for grinding the seams in hard to get areas, and we also used it to chop up the dash. Some of the dash brackets that we dont need were removed too....

And this is the amount of dash we decided to leave, The heater contol holes will probably recieve some guages, but i havent decided which ones yet, and Im going to make an Ally switch panel to sit where the vents were. Im also going to get hold of some Foamex to plug the gap left where we chopped the glovebox half off. Its ended up nice and light anyway, which was the most important factor!

ooh I like that! Neat idea! I had guages in my old grey dash and it rocks!! They look so at home in there and everyone assumed they were original spec. Gonna do my GSi dash over winter.

looks good lee, ill be having gauges in my dash aswell hopefully with the heater controls wired into the glovebox out the way just to keep the missus happy and warm lol
