also pump in wax oil into all the crevises like the hollow section in the front cross member under the radiator.
ok, thanks. will try that.
not done anything to the nova lately but i will be starting to put the complete front panel on next weekend. Is it ok to take the radiator out and leave it out for 2 weeks or should it keep it in all the time? It wont be started with no radiator in it, she will just be sitting still in a dry garage. Also is there any chance of it starting to rust with in a few weeks of welding it up?
its ok to leave the car with the radiator off, just dont start it, cause it will probebly over heat, also when re fitting it be carefull to bleed the system, to ensure there is no air in the system, when you have welded it up, let the welds cool, and give them a spray of primer, this will keep the rust at bay, until you do it properly.
well eventually got my front panel today. I got a crossmember with it. I am not bothered as i was going to weld a new one in anyway. Just need to get the old man to get into the garage and start welding.lol.
done a wee bit to the nova today. i took the radiator out and all the pipes, and done more cutting and grinding to get the old front panel off. I am considering taking the engine out now as it will probably be a pain to weld the crossmember in etc. I also could do with welding the seam along the chassis legs. It would be good if the engine was out then i could convert it to a 1400sr and paint the engine bay.lol
What do you guys think? I want to have it minted so its probably a good idea. Will insurance be expensive when i am 17 to have a 1300/1400 sr conversion. I will be putting the insurance through my dad. Any idea how much it will cost roughly?
as said on scottishnovas its a nice little project mate, as for the insurance through ur dads name, first car, mods etc etc..... i would have thought about the ?800-?1000 mark tpft,
do u have any pics of the inside of the boot, battery tray etc
looks clean enough on the out side tho :thumb:
the engine is coming out tommorow and it will be getting a seam welded bay. Also it will all get nicely painted black. I will get more pictures of the inside of arches/boot and battery tray ect soon. Will update my progress tommorow sometime.
what wheels are these? what car did the come off originally? I would like these on my nova.
http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o...heelsiwant.jpg
astra gsi
i spy the non starting 2.0 16v nova from e-gay, not a big fan of those wheels, try and soarce a set of cesaro's, u might have to travel tho:thumb:
i would like a set of white multispoke wheels for it or those astra gsi wheels. if i can get cesaro's i will get them. Anyway i am not looking for wheels just now as that will be one of the last things i am doing. need to get her welded first.lol
i have a to-do list! this is a few things i have though of that i would like to do before summer next year.
weld front panel on
full re-spray in shiny black,
Digi dash fitted,
GSI interior,
GSI kit fitted and colour coded,
my spax shockers/60mm springs on the front,
anti roll bar fitted,
basebox fitted,
gsi steering wheel fitted,
new handbrake cable etc,
new ball joints and track rod ends,
new wheel bearings,
The 1.2 engine will be getting kept in it for just now as it has done loads of miles and doesnt have much life left i dont think. It needs a new headgasket but i am just going to run it til it dies. I will source a 1300/1400 sr engine and have that spare. I am hoping to have a fast road cam and a set of twin 40's. Cant wait til the front end is all welded. After that i can get on with loads of other things.
hehe well, it should be a very good project to finish off to be honest!! good luck with it all!
well here is a small update. The 1.2 engine is half way out, only sitting in by two engine mounts and the drive shafts.lol.
I have bought a 1300 8v SR Nova that will be getting stripped. I have decided the engine is coming out of that and going in the black project car. I have no idea what i am going to do with the SR shell yet though. It is going to sit in my garage untill i need it or have a good plan. I wanted to build it into a rally car but it has a sunroof.:(
The SR interior will also be going in the black nova. Will take pics over the weekend.
Greg
i know that the SR engine will fit straight into the 1.2 carbed nova but what do i do with the gears/gear linkage as the engine was only a 4 speed. The SR is a 5 speed. I also heard that you have to wire up a different coil or something what do you do with the coil? What wires need changed/put in?? also do i not need the choke cable? If someone could give me as much info as possible it will be much appreciated.
Greg
best thing to do is have both cars side by side if possible, and swop the buits from the sr into the 1.2 mate, its pretty straight forward, just use the 5 speed box, but the 4 speed will be faster take off, but loose some top speed. i will pm you latter about our deal, got to go out now mate.
done a fair bit of work to the nova today. I have stripped the front end/wiring loom more and the engine and box is now out. I have bought a donor car (nova 1300 sr).
The engine and gearbox out the sr will be going in with a set of sport 40's and a fast road cam. The interior out the sr is going in the project car and also the g-max struts and 60mm springs for the front. Then the sr shell is getting welded up and painted and a 1600 gte engine dropped in and make it a gte look alike. Thats the plan anyway. The main thing is to get the black mk2 finished first though!lol

this project is now stopped for a wee while as i have bought a 1300 SR that i am using as my first road car. I was extremly shocked at how mint and rust free my new nova was. Have a look and see my new topic in the projects section. The black j reg nova will be getting built but going to do the SR first. Thanks for all the comments ect.:thumb:
this nova is now getting done up as the other nova is not as sound as i was told.
Anyway can someone do a photoshop of the mk2 nova with a sr bumper/grill/wings/lights on it. And painted jamaican yellow with the black along the bottom. I just want to see what it turns out like as i am tempted to convert it into a mk1 sr. Can someone also do the same car but with a gsi kit and all painted black. Both cars with speedlines please. P.S look on earlier pages for pics of this nova.thanks
Greg
This is what she last looked like at the weekend. Well i am getting there now. Just need someone handy with a welder. I have got bassicly everything collected up to finish this project. A nice set of gsi skirts, G-Max superport gas struts, 65mm springs all round, weber carb hopefully if deal goes well, digi dash and a nice set of sr retro cool seats! The 1300 sr engine is out the sr (well needs lifted out but that will take 2 mins) and then clean it up and re-build her. I have got a 1.2 head for it going on which will increase compression so in theory should make it go a wee bit quicker. Is this true? I was told it would!:D

it sounds like its going to be a nice tidy nova when its finished, looks like you have plenty of room to work in as well, always a bonus in scotland lol (what with the amazing weather)
yes have lots of room. i have a garage that can store 4 novas with plenty of room spare and a garage across the road i am allowed to use any time with space for 3 novas with a pit which is handy. The weather down here is a joke. we have had rain and wind constant for 2 weeks now. Today we have had snow/sleet all day. Hopefully get lots of nice fresh snow to go and paly in the nova tommorow and have a wee skive from school!
well thats both engines out both cars and ready to be converted. The sr engine is getting cleaned/parts painted over the weekend and hopefully next weekend i can put the sr engine in. i am going to give it a small re-build so what things should i do? the engine makes a quite rattling/chapping noise but seems to go away after warmed up and driven for a while. what could this be? i will be putting new headgasket kit/rocker cover gasket/sump gasket/inlet and outlet manifold gaskets, new oil, coolant, air filter and oil filter, ht leads, spark plugs and distributor. anything else to bare in mind when doing it? i want a good reliable engine!lol.
pics coming soon of tonights progress.
this is a few pics of the sr engine coming out-

more room in the garage now so i can strip and re-build the sr engine.
nice to see u took the window surrounds off :)
well thats the sr engine re-build started. I have got a re-furbed alternator and starter and a new alternator belt. Need to get the head skimmed, ported and polished, valve stem oil seals, oil pump, head gasket kit, 4 branch manifold, fast road cam and a weber 32 carb. i sorted all the wires out for the conversion today and its really straight forward so wont take long to get it in after the engine is cleaned up and had a small re-build. starting to feel as though i am getting somewhere!lol
god you gotted that sr didnt you
anyway looking forward to seeing the black mk1 sr, will look ace :thumb:
i have decided to go mk2 gsi style. It will look better i think. done even more work to my project this afternoon. I have cleaned and started grinding the underseal off the engine bay and stripped it even more ready for the re-spray. I also took the brake calipers off, the struts/springs, discs and the tie rods. I am taking that horrible metal gaurd off that goes behind the brake discs because i think it looks terrible. Should i put new track rod ends, bottom ball joints and bushes on? what things should i replace?? How much would it be for new bushes and ball joints etc?
i have a faulty starter on the 1.3 engine and the old 1.2 engine has a brand new starter so i have swapped them. Is it ok to do this? It seems to fit fine but havnt turned it over as the engine is not in the car???
i am gutted. I cant put the 1300 sr engine in for when i am 17 years old because insurance companies wont let you insure cars with engine conversions. i will have to stick to the 1200 engine for a while then convert it or sell the 1200 merit and buy a proper sr. I am not keen on insuring it ilegally.
well i have eventually got a guy round to have a look at my nova tonight. He is going to weld it for me so i am chuffed. Should be done pretty soon.Eventually getting somewhere again!lol
I will update progress pics etc when there is progress.:thumb:
i have been busy today! i cut out the whole front panel and crossmember and grinded all the seams back and they will be getting plated and seam welded as you can see from the pics they are quite rotten. The new front panel should be in by the end of next week. Then i will need to save my pennies to re-spray the engine bay/front end.
