Maybe it's that then lol.
Maybe... or it's my awesome photo skillz.... innit!
This winter will be bodywork time although quotes at present are rather scary!
Dude, you talked this up... the whole setup of the brakes has been a total nightmare....
Braided hoses are different connections to the hard pipes so new pipes installed. Now I can't get brake pressure.. Christmas, and a few clamps and I might be there!!
More pictures to follow.
So, since Photobucket fucked up, I had lost the will to update this, yes I had gone through and adjusted all the pictures back so they worked but uploading more to there was never going to happen.lol
So its about time I made a few updates. So to start with I had got the FlowFlex Bush kit for the whole car, the car had no ARBS so to start with I started with the front end. This was a full GSi ARB, Tie Bars, Arms and mounts as well.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4764/...6d4f99a4_o.jpg
Car up ready for the Arms

Bumper off and time to go under!
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4765/...0df3dfe3_o.jpg
Old arms off, like a twit forgot to get a photo of the new arms and ARB on.
after that, set about the Rear bushes (bar the rear beam which will come)

Old Spring bushes swapped for

Some Orange goodness!

Spring and Rear ARB bushes, plus nice Mid Graphite ARB as well. :thumb:
Now, I may have already posted the Clocks, but it seems I've missed some of the process! the Sting had 4 Dial clocks, I wanted 6 dials. so I found these on Ebay
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4659/...03f36622_o.jpg
Sadly, these weren't very happy, think the Rev counter was slightly burnt out so
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4713/...33b11310_o.jpg
Stage 1, gather all components.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4658/...76e18d5d_o.jpg
Stage 2, strip out the working parts from the 4 dials and fit into the 6 dials
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4757/...4b1039e8_o.jpg
Stage 3, fit the lockwood "white" dial kit 9its more a cream than white) and paint the needles black with red tips to show up on the Dials. Fit and Enjoy.
however they will need to go off and be calibrated, the Speedo over reads by 10mph, so 30mph is really 20!:eek:lol
So that was the simple bits, the more bolt on and have fun bits. Next bit the Brakes!
When I had the GSi, I had a Set of V6 Calibra Calipers from a Local lad who had a Corsa Sport. they sat on the GSi for a while and when I stripped it, the idea was they might go on my Corsa Sport, but I Sold that and got the Astra, so sold the Brakes to the guy who bought the Sport, he then sold the Corsa but kept the brakes and then sold them back to me again about 3 years later!
They are in a sorry state,
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4745/...075aaa21_o.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4661/...688e273d_o.jpg
So stripping them down I found the Pistons to be pretty poor
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4758/...49a73f57_o.jpg
Sent the Calipers and Carriers off to be powder coated
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4697/...bae5848a_o.jpg
While I was going about this upgrade I dug out the GSi Servo and Master Cylinder, Again, the Servo needed some TLC
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4676/...519d57de_o.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4756/...fec5b612_o.jpg
Primed and ready for Colour
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4620/...35a555bf_o.jpg
Went with a few cans of VW Diamond black from Halfords, forgot to get photos of that before I mounted the Servo.
New Discs

Calipers rebuilt, used a Kit from Big Red, new Pistons, seals, slider rubbers etc. also Goodridge hoses fitted as well.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4613/...7134f824_o.jpg
Servo and Calipers ready to go on.
so, on to the fitting... 6ft2, of large build, trying to get into take these nuts off and the link pin was fun.. and painful!
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4707/...fed99f48_o.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4607/...96d3393d_o.jpg
Undone ready to remove

Servo out ready for the GSi setup.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4702/...407fb977_o.jpg
and in, ready to connect the brake lines up.
Disc comparison...:eek:lol

Disc and Caliper on
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4740/...f601e22b_o.jpg
and wheel on
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4648/...90abeec1_o.jpg
Now at this point I'm well happy, just had the passenger side to do, which I couldn't do in the garage. few weeks later it was all complete. Or so I thought!
I had some issues, 1st off, the goodridge hoses were not direct fitments, the end of the hard pipes on the car were different ends so that meant I needed to build to new brake lines up.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4648/...0706d96f_o.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4716/...092ab88c_o.jpg
Problems solved or so I thought. I set about bleeding the system up. thought I had got that right but had not feel in the pedal at all. it got to the point that I gave up on it, fed up with getting no where.
Christmas came and went...
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4628/...21ea577d_o.jpg
Fast forward to March, yes, 3 months later! this was the furthest the car had moved for those 3 months
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/955/4...2eb905cd_o.jpg
So I had dad come over to give me a hand, did the usual, bit of grease on some bits, checked the pistons moved etc. did everything, then I mentioned, we should bleed them again... can anyone spot the issue...
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/829/3...a1ded426_o.jpg
yep that's right, the calipers are on the wrong side.... what a twat!
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/823/2...10443b7d_o.jpg
that's better and guess what, it works now! :d
So from this
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4698/...2ef37684_o.jpg
To this
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4627/...47d72ba5_o.jpg
Another update is the Exhaust.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4611/...dd774126_o.jpg
The GSi 4inch pipe that just didn't fit right. so went for a custom back box.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4621/...bdb591d9_o.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4649/...43cffbe3_o.jpg
wasn't sure I made the right choice, but the 3 rings on the twin pipes tie in with the 3 bumper lines.
and one last picture, it made it out to enjoy the summer we have just had!:eek:lol:thumb:
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/964/4...10b07624_o.jpg
All ready for its 1st show of the year at Earsham, plans for the year, enjoy it, get some quotes for the bodywork for the winter coming. maybe get the GSi lump out and give it a tidy up ready to go into this. need to work out the power delivery, whether it is Carbs or Throttle bodies.
This is looking nice and clean! Vauxhall should of made the calipers idiot proof lol
Nice work pal
So After all the trouble of the brakes I've been out enjoying the car,
went to the Adrian Flux Spring Static with a bit of rearranging we had 3 Novas all together. with the Mustard Yellow SR Turbo taking car of the show.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1771/...b82b4914_o.jpg
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1767/...c44894c0_o.jpg
something wasn't quite right as I had gained a fairly major steering wheel wobble so, thinking it might have been something to do with the Lotus discs I got hold of a set of spigot rings and 5mm wheel spacers
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1782/...ebf03fea_o.jpg
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1816/...c2d48654_o.jpg
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1816/...d0748f0d_o.jpg
something wasn't quite right with the rear, needed to get these nasty looking rear drums
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1817/...c4760b20_o.jpg
Cracked out the White Hammerite

All sorted for the likes of PVS, the 35 year of nova gathering etc.
then came the MOT.
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/921/2...0e0beb3f_o.jpg
Nothing to worry about, couple of advisories to sort out.
Oh and picked this up as well
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/855/4...3b80f15d_o.jpg
Inlet manifold for twin 40s to suit the 1.6. just need to find a set of Carbs now.
Photos to follow but it's been a busy winter period,.
Nova was packed off to the bodyshop in October. I dropped the engine out for the guy. Some well has been done, not that it needed much. Engine bay is painted and engine going back in on Saturday.
Picked up a full set of Twin 40s, inlet, linkages etc plus a Cam as well.
Look forward to seeing some pics, there aren't many better sounds then a set of twin 40s.
Just read the thread from start to finish, lovely nova, understated with worthwhile mods and upgrades
Look forward to more progress pics

I've talked about it, now time for the progress. a little catch with a few items that i may have missed.
When i got the car it had no Tape holders in the centre console, had see 1 on eBay but not a full set until i found these.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psgpa2fvje.jpg
just what i was looking for.
Installed and fully working

With the interior added too it was time to enjoy the car again, few photos from the 35 year of Nova

Then its last show of the year, Oh So Retro show in Margate. have to say i was pretty impressed with the show as a whole. 5th year of the show, 1st I've been too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psqogo4gpo.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psbkkadpri.jpg
Then we start, October 2018. the last time the car saw the road.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psi3p7gpxf.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psrpybhrwv.jpg
Popped the bumpers off as at that time i didn't want them to be sprayed, they will be heading down the bodyshop next Friday though.
towards the end of October i popped down to the bodyshop to remove the engine from the car as i wanted the engine bay painting as well
a small amount of work had been done.

Something i had noticed was that the metalwork under the radiator wasn't great, wasn't expecting this though
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pssyshpj6o.jpg
I cracked on getting the Engine out, was on site at 9am, 11am, engine ready to come out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps4pzripyd.jpg
Engine out

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psnkjfeiym.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psueos76ll.jpg
i helped get the windows out, boot off etc and this is how i left the car with Phil at the end of the day
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psubtpfsn1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps4ipmhvc3.jpg
I then start getting some updates from Phil on the bodywork. a lot of this would be repair works as it was more surface rust. I did have 2 new wings and Phil had a guy come in to repair the cross member.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psmpygis2n.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps2bdqiimu.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps0zkc3qj4.jpg
Cross member sorted out.
The Boot i wanted to smooth some of it off, remove the rear wiper, which Phil has done but said about the washer jet, something i hadn't thought about. He uses the old skills of Lead filling. there were also some small cracks on the sides of the boot as well.

Phil also attached the underside of the Bonnet, which probably took many hours getting into all the nasty bits.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pslsptsk3d.jpg
Also the new wings test fitted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psylwkkthp.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps70cqtemv.jpg
there is clearly a quality difference in the Pattern parts, i bought one at Billing (that's how long ago!) and that one fitted perfectly. the one Phil got, was poorly formed so found one on eBay which was as good as my Billing part.
i then got some photos of the panels in guide coat/primer

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pstpkfl1k7.jpg
I honestly thought that they were in Paint. lol
having just said it looks like its in paint, now seeing it on a real screen, its clearly not shiny! Phil then set about the engine bay, seam sealing and making good all the rusty bits.

while Phil was looking over the engine bay he came across a Stress fracture on the passenger side by the chassis leg, which he has repaired as well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psrasvldez.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pszcywsse6.jpg
this does look rather one sided, the Bodyshop doing all the work! just not true. I have been buying parts!lol
set of Twin 40s, a high lift cam, all ready for the 1.6.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psg0v5q8w8.jpg
I as had to do some work. i took the Manifold away with me and asked Dad to weld up the joint section, I also stripped off the Heat wrap which had accelerated the rusting on the manifold.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psqw7xfdg8.jpg
clean up with a wire brush and attached with this

Didn't come out too bad really
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pso5wly7pl.jpg

the other thing that needed to be tarted up was the steering rack. cleaned up ready.

this was all ready then to start putting the engine back in so it can be moved easier round the bodyshop.
i then received these photos.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psbqcf25it.jpg
at this point i was asked to go down there and refit the Engine so that Phil could move the car around the workshop. so enlisted the help of my Dad for a Saturday to get this done.
So first things first, steering rack back in
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psq32suohv.jpg
so glad i did clean it up and spray it, looks great in grey with the orange bushes.
didn't take many photos of getting the engine in but its back in again

these are the last photos i have at present and i doubt there will be any more at present until its complete! i will be dropping a few more bits off to Phil.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psekus0jvu.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pscialrqh3.jpg
Paint should be done by the end of this week, then it will be panels to be done and plastics which will be going Grey.
I've also order a full set of Hoses and clips.
Very nice
Looks great hope I get mine looking this good.
I love it! Looks really clean.
Lovely tidy job on the bay.
You know its takes seconds to take the throttle and clutch cable out tho...
Nice to see this is getting a refresh, always did like this car at shows some years ago. Keep it up
is everyone ready for a long update?? knew i should have kept up with this. lol.
so following on from my visit Phil could crack on moving the car about the workshop as well and get the bodywork completed.

So that leads me on to the exciting bit. getting the colour on.
Phil started with the Panels, bonnet, boot, wings etc. before moving the shell into the paint booth.

at this point i dropped off the Bumpers and Side skirts for the rebuild, however i was in for a shock. from what i had been quoted the cost had risen quite dramatically because of "extra" work Phil had done. only extra work that hadnt been discussed is shown in the next post.
So although i didn't plan on having the bumpers done, not having the boot floor done either, these seem to get done as well, hence the extras! i wasn't exactly pleased with it but in the long run it has been worth it.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...pszbplkway.jpg

I also got a few photos of the car in the day light.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...psvyj63adg.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...psyvdpbphk.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...ps8zdxc4gd.jpg
It was now on to the rebuild and grey parts.
so like my GSi, i wanted to go for a contrasting line round the car on the bottom of the bumpers, as i had gone Grey with the wheels, it made sense to carry this through the bumpers and side skirts with a few other bits for good measure.

Then it was onto the rebuild.
So i enlisted the help of my Dad again to help put the car back together. not many of putting it back together however i personally put the mirrors back together.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...pszbsgyvfy.jpg

then i had a box turn up.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...ps5qiw5hf8.jpg
full set of Samco hoses in Grey. although these are the 1.6 kits not for the 1.2 95% of them fit.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...psh7wy6ugj.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...psdtcbwr3k.jpg
So what am i meant to do? got to fit them! The engine lets the bay down so something had to be done!
