oh and some amazing work mate, keep it up :) them spot welds your driling out! rather you then me!!!!! - not read the whole thread but i've read most, and i was sent here to look at your break pedal setup as thats what i'm doing on mine :)
can't wait to see this finished :)
Well put my heater matrix in Friday night, and tightened up a jubilee so tight it creased the pipe in on itself. Wouldn't go back to being a circle:

So picked up a new matrix from the scrappy from a 28k miler, bonus is I got this little bracket with it so I no longer need the cable tie:

And fitted it, in fact I managed to fit it a little further back and so no matrix pipe mods were needed and I retained the flared ends! And the hose doesn't even touch the manifold, bonus:

Locked the hub in position with a screwdriver and done up my front hub nuts before I forget:

Yeah I know not very interesting but I wanted some advice on the circlip, does this look OK? The hub nuts are a little different to usual types:

On to today, I wanted to get my engine up to temperature. Cooling system filled with some GM coolant (ooh posh lol) I fitted up a temporary air filter:

Plan was to time the ignition up too but didn't get this done:

First start went badly. Running lumpy as hell and cylinders 3 and 4 were filled with fuel so potentially no spark there. Plug from #3:

And plug from #2, hmm:

Well I bolted the spark plugs back in and reconnected the leads and it ran like a charm, so maybe just the HT leads were loose.
Sat on fast idle for a bit:

I noticed a leak from a cylinder block core plug right behind the exhaust manifold, blah. Ignored it for a bit, revved it to about 3000rpm and this happened lol

So that ended that lol Trying to fit my fancy silicone hose but its very tight between the belt cover (well, the pulley itself) and the turret:

Car looks good Iain, as said earlier glad you sorted the poor running issue. I wouldn't worry to much about the leak, at least you know where yours is coming from!! Lol
Going to be fun when were out on track as you say :)
Iain, the best way to do the matrix, seeing as you already have it out, is to cut the pipe further back, and put the hose on so it joins in the car, ill get you a pic:

Good progress though!
Cheers for the tip Paul, I did try that initially but I wasn't happy with the coolant pipe going through the bulkhead with no grommet (was a tight fit).
The above pic with 3mm odd clearance is with a new matrix and unmodified pipes (achieved by mounting the matrix further back in the cabin) so I'm happy I can retain the flared ends to help stop the pipes coming off. :)
Dude the matrix pipes wont come off, there not under any real massive pressure etc, if i was you i would do it how Paul's said, as I'm sure you will still get enough movement to cause rubbing with it how it is now.
As for the induction pipe, I'm afraid thats how they are, if you if a brace it gets squashed in between the cover and turret, so unless you go TB's carb its something you'll live with.
Scott
I'll have to go ITBs then lol I'll leave the matrix for now tbh I feel like I'm making too much backwards progress at the mo :( Will keep an eye on it
By hacksawing off the RH mount lug and the original fan mount bracket I was able to wriggle the rad free via the front:

Sigh looking less complete again:

Having an issue removing the core plug, the bottom is pushing in and not rotating so the top isn't coming out, any suggestions? I might attack it with a dremel on the edge to relieve the pressure?

It should eventually turn iain or if you can get something between the top edge of the plug and the block and tap it down to make it turn.
