Cheers mate!
Wow, top turret modifications looks the business!! I Have wondered why no-one has done this before! How much have you welded in James? is the f/g bonnet single skin?
Thanks John...not sure what you mean how much have i welded in? If its the extra height in the turret its 45mm.Quote:

Lol yeah thats what i meant.
Tinker from tonight people not a great deal done as there was a lot of 'looking' going on (by myself i may add) lol mainly due to the issue surrounding my front cage leg to turret mounting point issues, i think the solution came out ok though.
Right - i got on with finishing off the O/S front turret extension welding and gave it a clean up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts002.jpg
Then a lick O paint
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts003.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts004.jpg
While this was drying i started the 'looking' i didn't have the camera for most of it as the missus was using it so i only have the end result but i will expain.
Basically the cage to front turret legs come throught the bulk head at a strange angle i.e. they bend inwards towards the centre of the car unlike most that follow the edge of the wing on the other side of the turret.
This puzzeled me as the cage was built as a full bolt in item and there was no were obvious you could bolt to even with the bulk head in place due to the angle so i can only assume they had some brackets simialar to what i have devised....
Here i what i did (3mm plate btw)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts009.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts011.jpg
Looking forward towards the front of the car
There is a support between the top and the bottom as seen below

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts015.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts017.jpg
And with the cage leg in place (it will be held by a bolt through the centre)

The bolt through here

Not the usual angle i was expecting....

That was it for tonight :thumb:
Very nice, weldings damn good as allways.
What leave the cage removeable? Surely welding it in and tagging to to the pillars will give it that bit more stiffness..
Where does that bar come from? Dont they normaly come in lkike a triangel from the leg?
Benn there a 16 bolt in type tag points all over the cage so instead of cut all these off i thought i might as well make use of them besides it doesn't hurt being removable.
That bar comes in off the A pillar cage leg but at an angle (and yes that is the only way they fit and its not fitted wrong i have tried every conceivable position) lol
Looking good James.
ALL cages in motorsport at one point had to be bolted in, its nothing unusual to see a fully multipoint cage that bolts in, they usually run extra fixing points in the B pillars and roof area to help stiffen the shell up but still allow removal of the cage.
You are 100% correct JB on the tag in points - i did take loads of pics of them when i first got the cage.
Thats one on the left
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g.../cage014-1.jpg
And here on the roof bar and B pillar
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...85/cage007.jpg
Thats basically the same as the one in my Escort, does it have the twin diagonal in the back ?
As you know I just had mine welded in though and front triangulation added but as it was a Grp4 cage they did originally have to be bolt in, just like yours did
No its doesn't have any diagonals or at least it didn't until i added one - apparently this was fitted in a rally nova used in competition (it had original scrutineers stickers all over it) and did have FIA homologation papers it was made by Gartrac and i'm happy with it plus its a 'dash less' cage so fits nice and neat in my car.
Well if you've done your research on Gartrac then you'll be well aware of their knowledge.
Looks a proper cage and something slightly different to the usual 6 point stuff even if it has involved a bit more fitting time.
Going back to the overall build I see your selling your sccr for a sequential, knowing what these things cost and the small benefits you'll gain from having one (except crying when you break it) what sort of coilovers will you be running as there is a big difference from a set of low end Spax/Konis/Avo to the top spec Bilstein/Proflex for example
I genuinelly feel if your thinking of making something that stands out and really handles then it needs to be complimented with a proper set of coilovers so unless you can afford both I'd be keeping the sccr and spending the rest on the suspension as that would make it faster point to point than a sequential box would, IMO ofcourse.
I have researched Gartrac a little and i am aware of their knowledge - their escort stuff is lovely.
I completely agree with you suspension wise.
Hello all and good evening etc...
After a lovely chip shop dinner i continued with the N/S on from last night (basically just drilled the hole for the nut and bolt and primed it - the bolt in place is for demonstrational purposes only....) as below
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts032.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts033.jpg
Then i started on the other side (camera in hand this time) i began with two 3mm pieces of plates that i shaped up like this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts023.jpg
then began welding them in around the cage leg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts024.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts025.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts026.jpg
And the other side
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts027.jpg
And tacked in
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts028.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts029.jpg
then it blasted home
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts031.jpg
On from this I made up the supports for the top and bottom of the mounting point and drilled the mounting hole as so
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts034.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts035.jpg
Then i took it all to pieces again and primed it up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts036.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts037.jpg
They are basically finished now (thank funk) as it feels like they have taken ages as i have been concentrating on one small area for a week or so but i'm quite happy with them
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts038.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts039.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts040.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts041.jpg
I can now move on to the rest of the cage mounting points especially the rear turrets :D enjoy :thumb:
They look and should be awesome, i get what you means with the cage and tag points, will you just weld like a bolt to the pillar, then you then bolt the cage too?
Guessing you will be welding the seams around the turret too?
Great work as always.
Are you not going to trim back the lip for the top mount adjustability?
The seams around the turrets? They have all already been stitched way back when i did the alternator mod etcQuote:

I might do but i was hoping to find some top mounts without the stupid raised centre so there would be no need to - saying that though i have adjustable bottom arms/tie bars etc so i can adjust camber/castor that way ;)Quote:

Good up the good work.
It shouldn't look like it around any of the turret as ive seam sealed all the seams.
Protec sell the eccentric mounts your looking for, I had them on my nova and so did Ad, I've never quite understood why the others people are using are made that way knowing that they require the strut tops modifying
by having the bearing on top you can then run lower surely...?
Just use shortened dampers like Rick does, my nova sat fine, handling was awesome and it didn't thave half the bits people use these days.
If people pick up the phone TBH and rang Gaz direct they would find they offer a couple of different lengths of nova/corsa damper....
Yes Rick you are correct....
Great work on the turrets & cage fitting Count. Its the kind of details & fabrication I like to see in these project threads.
aint been on for a few days.
some great work going on there with the turrets.
like how you make a potential problem made easy with the trusty welder and laods of patience.
Great project - worked my way back to page 35.....
Good to meet you the other night, hope the parts are a real help.
Top fabrication work! (thats about the 10th time ive said that in this thread lol )
James - I love the fact that you're actually thinking about what you want from the car, and not just buying bits off the shelf and bolting bits on (like I did).
Everything you've done so far has been completely custom to sort your needs, and hopefully others have also recognised this, from the cage fitting, to the shell prep in general, the front turrets, rear turrets, rack position, everything has been well thought out.
Well done mate, keep at it - and the quality of photos in this thread has also improved lots since your saloon thread.
Keep it up pal.
Olly
Thanks Olly really appreciate your praise (I have been trying with the photo's lol)
All the alterations i've made have been don for a reason and as you say i have tried to think about them instead of just diving in and funking it up.....
Thanks Phil it was good to meet you too :thumb:Quote:

Anyway i finally got on with the Nova at about 3pm today and started to address the cage fitment inside the cars cabin concentrating on the rear turret mounting points.
Here is the offending daily pi$$ing thing lol
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts001.jpg
And here are the spreader plates for the 4 feet of the cage
There are x2 of these for the front feet
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts008.jpg
And x2 of these for the rears - i started off with some measurements 140mmx120mm that i turned into a cut up piece of metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts006.jpg
I then profiled it to the shape of the floor
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts007.jpg
Moving swiftly on i started 'looking' at the cage to rear turret mounting point issue as below
basically the cage meets the turret in a really awkward place with only a few mm of clearance
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts003.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts004.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts002.jpg
In the end i started like this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts009.jpg
then this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts010.jpg
that lead to this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts011.jpg
so it went from this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts012.jpg
to this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts014.jpg
Off topic, empty your pm box fella.
And one for the other side of the car - the N/S (so now i have to inners)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts016.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts017.jpg
I then made up some thing for the out side of the cage mount
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts020.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts024.jpg
And beefed the design it up a little before i welded it in
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts025.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts026.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts028.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts029.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts030.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts031.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...emounts032.jpg
This is all i had time for unfortunately - the other side is all ready to be welded in. There will be a hole through the mount for a bolt the same as the front turrets.
