Good to hear its sorted Olly :)
On with friday now.
Yup - made a list last night of things to do before Fridays mapping...
> Stop exhaust from knocking, and check for any blowing as we put it on with no paste
... done this today at local garage who gave me access to a ramp for a couple of hours, used oxygen and acetylene to heat up manifold and bend it away from tunnel, checked for blowing and was only blowing on 1 joint out of 3, so was pleased about that
> Do oil change, as had put a fair whack of cam lube in there, along with new cams which could have had bits of swarf on
... whilst i was down at garage today, did oil change which is dead quick and easy with car in the air, and a proper oil drainage system, and even let me fill it back up for nothing using their Mobile 10w40 Semi - awesome
> Buy lambda boss, and bung, drill hole and weld it on manifold
... trip to John Wilcox this morning sorted me out with a lambda boss and bung, just need to actually fit it onto the manifold
> Soften suspension, as I still had it setup for track - very stiff
... softened suspension by 10 clicks on the rear, and 7 clicks on the front which eased the pain of UK roads a little, however for the journey across to JB's and down to Kent, i'll soften it all the way
> Wire up the horn
... done diddly done tonight
> Sorting clocks out, fuel gauge and oil pressure misreading
... as mentioned above - done that too tonight- happy that i now know how much normal unleaded i have to use in time for Friday, as I will want to be getting it mapped on V-Power
> buy some ear plugs and charge iPod
... again - for journey down there, not done this yet
> wire in cigarette lighter socket, for charging TomTom or whatever
... this is still to be done
I wouldnt map it on V power olly, map it to a more regular super thats more freely availiable (97 or 98). Being stuck at a circuit and needing a top up with no shell garage in sight is annoying to say the least, and I doubt your engine is so close to Detting that V power is the only option lol
**** that, map it on V power, any other super will get you out of the cack when its needed but you can always find a Shell garage to fill up for trackdays, which tbh is what the car is built for.
V-power's ****e anyway.
Its not "proper" RON, just boosted with additives.
TESCO 99 is where its at lol
lmao lol Why bother, v power isnt going to make it any better, you may as well map it to the fuel most readily availiable.
Lee has a fair point BUT I've never been stuck for Shell fuels, I always carry a large jerry can which will easily see you through a day on track.
That much is true, if your carrying extra fuel it doesnt make much difference what you map it on.
But if you decide to do a trackday when Vpower isnt availiable, which happens a lot in my experience, youll have to run on a lower octane.
Not that it'll make much difference, but it'll go just as well mapped to either fuel. Why narrow your options?
The differences between Super and V Power is small but there is differences, I'd much rather map it on V power but we have about 10 Shell garages in our area. I've never been stuck wherever I am in the uk or abroad.
If you have ever monitored knock using different fuels then you may realise why people use V power.
For that reason it would seme sensibel to map it on whatever the local fuel is but IMO there is more than enough Shell garages to not be stuck
fuels fuel right?
Yeah, V power's great for high comp engines. But olly's isnt a high comp engine lol It would probably be perfectly happy on 95!
But as you say, if you have plenty of V power about, you might just as well.
NOT at all, enough tests have been done to prove that they are no where near the same.
Less of a problem on atmo engines, huge problem with turbo engines.
A couple of my mates run some serious monitoring gear in their cars whilst mapping and when their not and it is worrying to see the difference from fuels and even in some cases the differences with or without a splitter fitted !
Tesco 99RON has been proven better than V-Power.
And it keeps its octane rating.
V-Power "degrades"
Im not saying theres no difference, im saying on Ollys engine the difference will be so minimal as far as performance goes, it makes no odds whatsoever lolQuote:

My old engine used to mildly det on 95 and run fine on 98, which proves there is a difference, however i was running a ludicrous comp ratio lol Ollys block is standard, so in all fairness super would be more than adequate imo :)
I know you know your stuff Jonlem, im not arguing with you here lol lol Just stating my opinion based on my experience with many XE's!
All the more reason to map on V-power then, if you cant get it you end up on better fuel, rather than vice versa.
I'm currently using the same spec engine as Ollys and I have run it on both fuels, the difference is ridiculous :eek:Quote:

Anyway this isn't a topic about fuels and octane ratings so we can carry this on elsewhere another time :thumb:
Lee- totally fair points there mate, I have no doubt you have also had the luck of being around so many crap and so many nice xe's that we could go on all day about what we have learnt.
A xe with a mildly skimmed head will det on 95, I have the piston to prove it LOL
Adam, this is true but with Tesco's past record I think I'll buy my fuel from someone who hasn't caused many problems with customers engines ha ha
V Power may degrade but lets be honest, its not in their tanks long and I certainly know its never in mine long either lol
Just realised, Olly has done a whole days work and NO pictures !!!
I'm concerned for you mate, are you ok ?
no, i feel faint.
just to clear things up, bearing in mind i have a 3 hour journey in the car with you JB, to the mapping session, i think it'll save my ears just to get it mapped on v power ffs lol
you going on would be worse than TBs + SCCR put together lol
Pah, get it mapped on whatever YOU feel right mate ;)
I'll find something else worth nagging at you about, don't you worry.
When were back at mine on friday it will be you doing the nagging whilst I'm doing some uphill gardening
awww, playing hard to get now, just how I like them
Is there something going on between you two?
lol
can i join in
Lmao
I would always map on the fuel i intend to use. There is no point mapping on V-Power if your going to go and fill up at sainsburys after mapping. Not only could it damage your engine your also not maximizing your map.
My point is Rick that there is enough Shell garages in the uk not to be stuck without any.Quote:

Thats how I am though and I cant expect everyone else to be the same :thumb:
Mapping yours on Sainsurys special then ? or Vpower and 102 mix for race map :D
I can remember two occasions ive gone into a shell garage with a sign saying 'no vmax'. lol
76
Had my z20let on the same rollers with both tesco 99 and v-power and the v-power gave me 275bhp 340lbft and the tesco gave me 290bhp and 335lbft. I use the 99 tesco stuff as its so close to my house. But a new shell station has just opened across the road from my work ! V-power feels smoother, which i like.
Map it on v-power mate.
I have never been stuck without a shell garage. I will have mine mapped on V-Power. No issues getting it and no reason for me to go anywhere else for fuel.
LPG lolQuote:

End of the day Olly, your in the same situation as i am. Have a "normal" car and a track car. When i map mine AGAIN it will be on v power as thats the best fuel on the forecourt.
Look forward to an update on friday, i shall be up "feeding" anyways :thumb:
small update...
was around silverstone area today, so I dropped by Mardi Gras Motorsport to buy some Ferodo DS2500s, they had them on the shelf for Dynalite II calipers, and a bargain price of ?42
wanted them in for trackday at Bedford, but obviously needed them bedding in, so i fitted them tonight intime for the journey daaan saaafff, so that'll be 300miles worth at least.
also removed manifold to fit new lambda boss, and bung, so got a holecutter/ drill bit out and cut a hole big enough for the boss to fit inside, slight tap with the hammer, and them seam welded around it to ensure no blowing, sprayed it up and refitted to car/ exhaust - all checked and is sweet
just two bits to do now, cigarette lighter plug socket to be wired in for TomTom, and refit doorbars to rollcage :)
Sweet :)
Nice one mate.
I'm not gay
That seals it then Olly, Map it on V power, it appears to give people erections if nothing else! lol
I always walk round with a stiffy, its just so small you would never notice Lee lol
I've decided, I'm going to map it on whatever the highest RON petrol the petrol station sells that I run out at.
I'm currently on half a tank, so it won't get me down to Track n Road.
Simple. :)
Now you have said that it will be a Bp with the new 102 fuel lol
reet then, all set for mapping tomorrow now then...
pics of new pads i've decided to try out
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0613.jpg
very pleasing to see that the apparent rubbish EBC greenstuff have held out very well considering alot of road mileage, along with a wet trackday
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0614.jpg
bought itg 130mm ID sausage filter and backing plate, and to re-route all the fuel lines which gave me a chance to flip FPR so gauge is easier to read too
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...ure/nc0615.jpg
Out of the list of things to do, the only thing I didnt do, was wire in a cig lighter socket for the TomTom, I've bought it, just didnt get around to wiring it in - but can do that tomorrow
Cool. Hope mapping goes well for you :)
