It seems that the CV itself gripped the inside of the drive flange instead of mating to the inside of the bearing. The washer solves all, it's only 2mm thick, I doesn't shorten too much and as you know Mr Ghost I'm not lower than the queen's nips so I'm hoping it wont bring any issues.

You're right that when machining for larger bearings they shorten the flange a little, to prevent the above from happening.

As for the diff, I love what I've experienced so far, I can see how Iain is 5 seconds a lap quicker round Cadwell with his diff, once I learn the limits I think it's gonna really be fun to drive.

Never heard of a spacer inside the hub, just use the one under the nut. Big block hubs in machined knuckles with Golf bearings here

I find it a bit unpredictable, Find in a straight line. But if i let off even 5% in a corner it wants to change lines. Like pulling forward to pushing right/left.. Doesn't give conference when powering thru a round about.

ill be ordering some machined knuckles and bearings within the next 10 days. It's the best solution without a doubt.

And until then Mallory will have to be done on heavily machined LMF hubs which will be pressed into these I've prepped for you xxx

Iain, you could of painted them the same colour. One is clearly done in POR15 and the other looks like it's just Matt black over primer. I mean, I supplied you a head that was 98% refurbed and this is how you repay me??

Shame that remaining 2% fell off and wrote off my engine. You'll get what you're given they'll be in Team Shonky spares pile by next week anyway!

Where to begin..........

Mallory Park with the Elderkin and a surprise guest..........HARVEY!!!!!! and the lovely Amanda!!

I've been fitting some lifts for Euro Car Parts in their new 'kin huge warehouse in Tamworth, so I drove the car up to site Wednesday then off to Elder's house to fit some knuckles he'd prepared, we pressed the LMF flanges in and threw them on the car. I also put the Carbon Lorraine RC6 pads on aswell and instantly the brake pedal felt better, it was 2am at this point so we retired to the house for a shower and a snuggle.

I went back to ECP for Thursday and Iain did some Harry Potter magic to make my wheels point straight.

Thursday afternoon, load up the trailers, too much cheese-less and then early to bed!!

Got to Mallory at 7am this morning, we had a garage booked

Got out for a few sessions, learning the track, Mallory is a great circuit, short lap but lots to work on.

Predictably Iain blew up a CV

Quick few laps from the afternoon, chasing an MR2 that wouldn't let me by on the straights!!

Decided after lunch to get a ride along with Mark from Javelin and get a look at the lines I was using and see if he could help improve anything, Mark's a nice guy and gave me some good tips on track position, he said I was very efficient with the pedals, no coasting into braking zones and appyling the power smoothly and consistently.

Unfortunately the white of Mark's helmet interfered with the camera and it couldn't see the track!!!

As for the failure it seems the drive flange has split in 2 where the radius is, the threaded end of the CV with the castle nut has snapped off and dissapeared. It's just luck that the MX5 was in-front of me in Goddards and I was slower through there, had I been full chat then I don't know what could have happened!!

Without any question I'll be ordering machined knuckles and Audi bearings Tuesday either from Hockley or from Iain's mate. This is un-believable, from what I've heard it's sheer luck that it didn't spit the wheel out and send us off into the barriers.

The disc has made love to the caliper but I think it's salvageable, the pads are also luckily ok!! More pics to follow when I get it apart, I guess it's an excuse for Iain and I to add a little surprise we've got planned before out next track day!!

As for the diff, it's off the scale, very very happy with it!!

Ooouch! Looks like you got a bit lucky there, quite how you managed to retain the wheel is a mystery, I suppose the brake caliper was just tight enough on clearance with the disc to keep the whole assembly in the hub?

I've not really studied the hub to drive shaft fit issue, but with the fitting of a spacer between the CV and the inner bearing being an accepted tweak to limit drive shaft plunge at higher angles of turn, is exposes the hub to greater forces. To my mind it would be way better to have the drive shaft splines extending right through the hub to a point just a mm or so short of the outer face (to allow the hub to be tightened up) thus spreading the load from the hollow hub into the solid shaft.

Looking forward to a blow by blow look/account of your new hub/carrier/CV assembly.

Looking on the bright side at least your engine survived that long high G first corner without complaint. :thumb:

Knuckles prepared ready to be blasted as Modus on Tuesday as I'm borrowing their blasting machine.

Then off to Hockley for machining I think, £120 to machine the knuckles and the brand new Febi hubs I'm about to buy.

Just need the bearings and we're back in business for Blyton in later June.

Sadly when hubs are machined 95% arnt done right. Hence the snapping. Glad you and the car are ok tho, as the disc holding the wheel on really isnt good! Seen it before on the road was bad, let alone the track.

Love that you took Mark out, he seems to really know the track, shame we couldn't hear him. That's always interesting. Hand signals are good tho.

These were from LMF mate, I'm sure loads of big block guys run them!!! Mad that we use them without realising!! For around £120 Hockley will machine hubs and knuckles and then you just add Audi bearings. I'll never run anything else again!!

You're right Mark is a top guy, really easy to talk to and brave, I wouldn't get in a car that was part of a team that had the word Shonky in the name!! He said he's been out with some real clowns, who frankly, scared him!!! He was complimentary about my driving which Iain found hard to believe!!! He can never be happy when someone compliments me.

The hand signals were really good, it sounds silly but when you have instruction you're wasting your time if you don't do what he says (or gestures) when he says, if you just carry on doing what you do then you're gaining nothing. Car position into Gerrards was the biggest thing I was doing wrong really, it's middle of the road and just hold the speed, then tighten the line and accelerate as you get to the first escape road on the right, clip the inside curb and let the power drift you out.

For £20, I'll be honest, it's something I'm gonna look to book for around 10am on each new track, I'll certainly do so for Cadwell next time and I hope Blyton as I'll be proper schooled by Iain and Harvey there as it's their home track!!

Damage assessment

I managed to get a new CV in at Mallory before loading it on the trailer so atleast I could get it on and off the trailer

Pads survived, caliper has some cosmetic damage, it's got bloody hot aswell, I'm gonna take it up to hi-spec to get some dust seals and check to pressure seals themselves are ok, pads look fine, I thought they might have suffered some CV grease contamination.

Got bored today so made a little start on the cage front legs, after long discussions with Iain, we felt the best plan was to leave the existing rear hoop in and weld the new front legs to it using some connection saddles.

Once this bar comes down level with the top of the door frame it's in exactly the right place for the saddle.

Same drivers side, I've even managed to retain the sides of the dash for mounting purposes!! Just need to move my fuel supply bulkhead unions and we're in business. Saddles on order from ebay!! Might not be properly in for PVS but will be somewhere close.

Those mega expensive pads survived 'cause they are made of expensive stuff. Caliper don't look bad at all, seen much worse continued to be used. Stuck my Astra in the garage, dead flies and all and not touched it since. Blyton you say, mmm, might be on for that one as I love the place so better get my FPR sorted. Looking at Fuelab FPR now and might just leave my LET injectors as no point spending £600 on FPR, injectors and remap when i can just stick a new FPR on and be done with it.

I like this plan!!

So few little bits played around with.

Cage wont be fully mounted before PVS but I'll enjoy the bellends making comments about it only being held in with 2 M8 bolts on the front legs!!

Added the front door bars, as there are 2 on the drivers side, I cut one downand re-welded to play around with length, I've ordered some saddles from ebay to weld onto the bars and hoop when cut down properly.

Ready to be shipped to HH for machining, just need the bearings and flanges (due Thursday) and they'll be away in the post, turnaround is a reported 2 weeks so fingers crossed Blyton will work on the 26th!!

going Audi bearings? I'd have left the paint until back from machining tbh. Don't suppose it's a big deal going over again if need be though.

Yeah I'll have to re-spray when they're back but I'll need to assemble and grind a little off the knuckles to allow the discs to fit them anyway, could have done this before but I'm out of time, need them away and back ASAP, I wanted them to arrive at Hockly looking like I give a f,uck aswell!!!!

Yeah we're going for the Audi 80 bearings as Iain has suggested, both Modus and the guys at the Phirm said they'd machine the knuckles easily enough, it was decided all round that for £120 it was so much easier for HH to do them.

Iain reports his bearings have been in 2 years with zero play at present, considering my wheel fell off on Nova bearings, that, I see as an improvement on my present situation!!! lollollol

Parts received at HHMS so hopefully back in 2 weeks ready for Bedford.

Thanks to Connor, I managed to source another machined down hub (he had 2 in stock), he pressed it in for me at his work along with a nice new bearing, not a perfect solution but enough to get the car back on it's wheels and allow me to drive it to PVS.

Out for a road test, caliper and brakes work fine so that's good, tyre is ok, I thought it might have been knackered after the 1/4 mile they dragged me with it locked but it seems ok.

Just need to get the tracking done and rotate some tyres ready for Bedford and we're good to go!!
