what about taking the boot off then using a single hex socket and a impact gun?

what about taking the boot off then using a single hex socket and a impact gun?
they are allen headed contersunk bolts so a six sided socket is no use, but an impact wrench might be if you have a decent quality 1/2 drive allen socket, but tbh, i would be heating them up whatever you try to use, as they are a right pain to remove usually, could always drill the heads off as a last resort
They are torque headed bolts to make life even easier... I did think about my impact gun as it does the same job as driver.. I've tried to do one before and it just rounded, i've oiled them already. Hoping it might soak in..lol
If not i'll leave them and remove at the bodyshop with some oxy...
So found the first prob on Friday.
Here is my roof with sunroof bits.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps18f45aa5.jpg
Now i hadn't been looking enough, i thought the roof support was still there with the sunroof parts welded on...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd25de89f.jpg
Yeah it isnt. As it would be to far along. Big prob.
So i thought of a few, maybe Craig has his, as i remember him cutting it out... Nope. But gave me a tip there was one in a local scrappy.. Or off i pop. They where utterly useless. Plus it had a sunroof too... Try 3 other local ones nothing.. Gonna be hard to get this i'm thinking... Popped and saw a friend who's boy races Novas, so he might have/know some one with something... He rings a man that builds cages and oval race cars...
He has one. YAY! Says come over and he'll remove it.
Get there, have a chat over what i need and he removes it for me. As he removes them for fit the cages.
So if you are gonna do this, you need this....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps7b3c68d1.jpg
Very hard to get out as it's spot welded on the inside..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf28353fe.jpg
When a cut the roof off mine a kept the support u can have it if you want
You could of taken your shoes out of the picture!!!
Don't like problems, at least ill know what to do when I do mine.
That brace, am I right in saying if I run a weld in cage I won't need that?
Got the boot off..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psb07f9489.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps70452d27.jpg
Got all my seats out, door cards off, anything that could get welding/grinding damage really. As it will all fall down from the roof.
These... Ggrrrrr
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps847c7e52.jpg
Started on them with my impact gun... Nothing. Got a feeling i'll be drilling them out and then replacing them.
More tomoz...
That you for the offer, but as you can see i got that one now.. If i was stuck tho i'd of had it.
haha Mrs slippers. I dont like problems either! This was gonna be a bigish one too. But the guy i got it from, i'm keeping his number as i think he'll be handy to know.
If you have a cage then i believe the bar will just be in your way. so yeah you'll be removing it, but as you have a dealer fit sunroof, they might of hacked a bit out of it anyway...
Thought it would be off by now!!
You taking of pics for me?
lol i need to get the hinges off first, and yeah i'm taking loads. So far tho i've only started cleaning welds off. I might need to get it in the bodyshop to heat the bolts to get them undone.
Lol
Wow. They look strange with no roof!
new sunroof benn? lol lol
 That was fun I bet, fit a panoramic roof :d
Good job Mr Benn
Fancy doing another?
More pics please :)
Takes some balls to start something like that on your pride and joy. Hope it all goes to plan for ya
Yes they do, ever weirder sat in the car...
I'm kepping it incase i do any welding job..lol
In car shower system.
Terrible idea putting sunroofs in.
I have loads of pics, i'll upload them fully tonight, that was just a quick preview.
And so far no i don't wana do another.
Same for you cutting the front up..lol It's kinda fun grinder the roof off tbh. Drilling spot welds arnt fun tho.. They are all over the place. Guy must of been pissed.
Your a very brave man benn, I wish I was like you as I hate the sunroof fitted to my nova and want a new roof skin, I really hope the replacement goes smoothly mate !
What's been done so far hasn't been hard. I've had the back up of the bodyshop tho, that make's it a bit less of a worry.
Small up date. I wont add all the pics as they arnt that interesting...
So start by cleaning all the joins off..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psfaa4420d.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psaddc91d4.jpg
Now all the spot welds and bits can be seen. We can drill them out..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps909c6b9f.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps5ebe0072.jpg
Then you start cutting...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps8ffa8882.jpg
Off...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psc9f100d4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa146aaf1.jpg
Bit i had to buy, will be welded in here. Handy holes to line up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psb20ae834.jpg
You can see here that the sides in the rails have been left at the mo,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps3e4eb8ca.jpg
These are a rolled weld (a wheel the rolls along and welds as it goes) So cant really be drilled, so gonna have to grind the top of the weld off..
Old roof, gonna be used for metal to weld with and stuff...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps90c9dd49.jpg
You can see here where water has got in...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps5ebe0072.jpg
All the bits like that have now been cleaned up, sealant removed and been etch primed. As metal bonda will be used on them again, then i'll give them a coat of paint once the roofs on.
Got the new skin all unwrapped...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps01c2841b.jpg
Found this :mad::mad::mad:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psdd1ff806.jpg
Part number for anyone that might need it...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps487029af.jpg
Guess it's from where it's been stored over the years. Where really worried there would be one each side and it would be kinked thought the middle, luckily there isn't. (dent all the way across)
Test fitted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf5c8a16a.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps74845079.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psfe73a496.jpg
Now the skin isn't fully on but theres still a big gap... Hopping it will touch when the gutters are sorted and it's sat down all the way.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psc509d024.jpg
looks good so far mate
Cheers dude. So gutted the roof has two dents in it tho. But then again it wasn't really packaged.
Massive respect for attempting such a make or break task...looking very good..
I bet it's so annoying getting brand new gm parts that are very rare and they have dents ect in them! But good work man that's a big job
Thank you. It has been a worry.
It is very annoying. Got it so would be the best way, but then when you think that it was made in 1990 (from the sticker on it) then OCP got it who knows when, so thats 22/23 years old, 2 warehouses, 1/2 moves. No box or anything, thin cheap bubble wrap. It's a hell of a lot better than it could be....
Putting the skin back on will be the biggest job.
Fek me, two dents?
Yeah one each side on the ends.... Main bit is ok tho.
Yeah your right benn could be much worse I guess!
I'd have cried if it was on the main bit.
Top stuff Benn
What you going to do? Bond whole thing on? Or spot and just bond near gutters?
Shame about the dents
Bond on the sides with a spot weld at each end and one in the middle, bond on the supports like there was, spotted on the screen and boot lips.
Cheers to :)
Great work Benn! Shame about the dent but I'm sure it's something you can sort easy enough!
Cheers :)
I feel gutted matey, as I've checked the middle of the plate (as that dents real easy) while they wrapped the whole plate in bubble wrap.
Oh was it unwrapped when you picked it up? And please dont feel bad, you did me a huge favor picking it up for me.
Yeah they wrapped it when I was there as it was in a box first but that didn't fit in my car... It was wrapped in cardboard stuff around the sides and then they wrapped the whole plate with bubble wrap again.
