Reference Information
Ok i thought i would put some helpful reference material in here for people who fancy doing this in the future.
If your going down the manta route.
Gear Box - manta 1.8 Getrag. be careful there are two getrags which came out of the mantas, and one is right, one isnt.
spigot bearing - you'll need one. standard manta item, internal Dia 15mm, overall Dia 21mm
Flywheel - Flat XE
Clutch Cover - Standard XE
Clutch Friction plate - Carlton 1.8 fits bang on the getrag box. and is a good size for the XE cover.
Sump - dont buy a yukspeed one. doesnt fit with the manta sump, some clash with the clutch cable.
Type 9 box -
SBD do all of these parts, of the shelf. i think the only special piece from them is the clutch friction plate, as it has the 1" splines for the type 9, but the size for the XE.
sump wise with a type 9, a yukspeed one should be fine and easy to source.
Engine mounts - everyone raves about the manta ones. they are so overrated.
in the chevette. once bolted on. you have to mod the cross member to get them to line up. i do have the diemensions to do this, but its alot of hassle. and if you knacker the cross member, you have to source another one.
My way of doing it is. keep the cross memeber standard.
and make custom mounts, make the triangles bolt to engine and then using the rally design rubbers, make up the difference.
hope this helps some people. :d
Does anyone other than yukspeed do big winged sumps? There's look crap quality!
i saw a "one man band" on ebay offering to weld up alloy ones, for about 90 quid.Quote:

ok got my spigot bearing through today, fits like a glove. and looks all good.
am close to bolting up the box for the last time :D
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...156/engine.jpg
I know someone who gets frontera 2.0 8v ones and alters the bowl height. other option is cut and weld a steel 2.0 8v one.
manta 18s sump with the 18s pick up pipe.
you dont really need the pipe, an 20XE item is the same, it's just at a different angle, but not much, so easy to mod (read: bend to fit.)
manta 18s mounts are overpriced, but as i stated before, the best way is one manta 18s mount, and 1 carlton 2,0 mount.
there easy to make youreself tbh.
r25 is also a straight fit, and isnt as big as a getrag, less mods to fit in a smallblock tunnel.
also, dont be worried about the engine not sitting straight, for some reason the sump sits straight when the engine itself looks to be hanging sideways a bit.
my mate is doing me a 8v sump for about 30 quid, making it into a big wing :)
yeh the manta ones are the of the shelf method, but i have two problems. one is finding one of the buggers, and the other is if i have a accident etc, and i crack the sump, im not gonna be happy.
yeh im gonna make the mounts my self, even though i have the manta items as well ! lol
and a small update while im here,
went to vauxh today to get the 6 new clutch bolts, bolted it all up finally and chucked the box on for the final time. all bolts in, and got the starter motor on as well. good times :D
next should be, make some triangles for the block, and then mount the bugger :D
ordered my inlet manifold today from SBD, with some other accessories
exciteddddd
You not finished this yet ? lol
rofl, not im not rich, so cant buy all the bits at once :DQuote:

and been doing some smaller trivial bits while i wait for my welder to come back.
The Panard (sp) rod has to be shortened by a few mm, so i thought i would put an adjuster in there, not finished as im waiting on the welder lol.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car002-1.jpg
and also, after some decisions, im not using the Manta mounts. as its a PITA. so i bought some of these plates, and it gives me a good base to weld the mount to.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car005-1.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car001-1.jpg
and also the inlet manifold and a few small bits are on order from SBD, should be here end of week :D
ok, i took of the wings today, in prep for the engine going in, just dont really wanna scratch them.
i have already taken of the pass one, and its mint under!,
today i took of the driver one, these are the results.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/DSC_3952.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/DSC_3947.jpg
im not best pleased to say the least. i pulled a massive handful of dirt from the bottom, which probably had excelled the rotting. grrrr
engine in in a few weeks.
interesting project keep up the good work bud
that rot is nothing with the skills you gained from the nova, get it sorted fella
cheers guys, yeh burgo it will be done soon, i finished cutting it out, and was left with this.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car007-1.jpg
also as it used to be an auto, i had to source a clutch pedal. so hunted down a chevette pedal box, and it was a perfect fit, so changed the auto brake pedal (wider and more central) for a manual brake and clutch pedal. it fits perfect, and i havent got to alter the shell at all. win
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car008-1.jpg
and also picked up a locking fuel cap, so chopped it some and made it fit lol
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car006-1.jpg
its ready for tomorrow :D
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car010-1.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car009-1.jpg
fit the other engine ;)
did you make that trolley to fit? tis an awesome little bit of kit
no burgo, it was a damaged piece of stock at work, so i borrowed it long term.Quote:

its just 60 x 40 x 2.5 and then 4 x 100mm castors.
ok so today me and a friend put the XE into the chevette. it was certainly tight at times lol.
we put it in engine and box together, through the top as there is a cross member below.
we checked and checked to make sure its 7 degrees with a piece of wood cut to 7 degrees and a spirit level and all is perfect.
sorry no pics before it went it.
engine in and starting to get it over to 7 degrees.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car014-1.jpg
the we got some 40 x 40 x 2.5 and made the middle part, the bit on top of the rubber it 60 x 6 btw. tacked in place
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car026-1.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car015-1.jpg
fully welded them, and added a gusset for strength.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car019-1.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...6/car018-1.jpg
and bolted them in, and propped up the gearbox end for now.
some completed pics :D

well chuffed now that its in.
comments please
p.s the bonnet shuts with about 5mm space. good times
martin, i can get a carlton water pipe setup, which feeds to the front, seen as your water pipe is going round the back of the engine.
That looks lush :)
