The car literally hasnt been out of the garage for months and months so the other day as the weather is getting a lot better etc i thought i'll get it out and start getting ready for MOT and going back on the road etc! So dragged the old girl out and she was covered in dust,
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...7/IMG_0242.jpg
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...7/IMG_0243.jpg
So the next thing to do was to get the car looking half decent again, it was so full of dust and stuff because i dont like using a car cover on it because it could damage paintwork and scratch the car and it stays in the garage nice and dry anyway so i dont see the need really. Anyhoo rinsed the car off and then set about it with these:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...7/IMG_0248.jpg
Around 6 hours and a bit of sunburn later i was left with this:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...IMG_0266-1.jpg
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...IMG_0267-1.jpg
Looking a lot better now after a full rinse and then wash, full AG clay bar, full AG super resin polish and then 1 coat of AG HD wax, took a long time but i think the results speak for themselves and the car is restored to looking nice and shiny again  Further to this i took all the wheels off and gave them the same treatment as the bodywork of the car and they have come up nicely too which is great but didnt get any pictures of these as it was going dark, i'll take some next time the cars out!
Looks lovely
Fleece lined car covers don't scratch the paintwork, just a thought and could save the elbow grease lol
this is a very nice nova you have there andy, good work:thumb:
Once i'd sorted out the car being clean it was time to have a look at a few niggling mechanical problems that i had noticed when the car was on the road last year.
One problem was when the car was warm the idle would be very erratic and would move up and down between 700 and 1500 rpm and was very annoying. I had tried everything to solve this, all the usual stuff, ICV changed, CTS, unblocked breathers, carried out the breather mod, allsorts done. One thing i did have left to try was changing the throttle body and seeing if the issue was there, Lee H donated me a throttle body (cheers mate) :thumb: so i whipped off the old throttle body, which was gunked up beyond belief, as was the new one but cleaned that up with some brake cleaner and got it fitted and the idle was still not great, it seemed improved but could just be due to the cleaned up TB and new TB position sensor being fitted. So i then moved on to checking every single breather hose for leaks etc, spent about 3 hours checking them all and eventually found the hose that goes from the ICV to the bottom of the inlet manifold had a slight split in it which was obviously expanding when warm and causing the overfueling and idle issues, changed that and now the car idles like a dream  (didnt take any pics of this as it was darkish in the garage)
Next job was i've always had a slight knocking noise coming from the n/s/f of the car when going over bumps etc, the bottom ball joint and track rods and strut are all new so i've ruled all those out, wereas i have a set of used TAS eccentric topmounts fitted and i dont know how much use they have had before i got them, so did this:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...IMG_0270-1.jpg
I know this is a pic of the o/s/f but i removed that strut aswell to check the topmount against the other side:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...IMG_0271-1.jpg
Checked the play in the topmount bearing while it was still attatched to the strut and the bearing does feel to have a lot of play in it which i'm presuming is going to be my knocking noise, the other side did have play in it aswell but could just not have got to the point of knocking yet like the n/s/f bearing. So removed the topmount from the strut and then tapped the bearing out of the topmount to be left with this:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...IMG_0269-1.jpg
and the offending bearing, which i think will have been in the mount from new and so could be quite old and could have seen some abuse over the years:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...IMG_0272-1.jpg
Went to a local bearing supplier with the bearing and asked if he could get hold of some, apparently bearings have the measurements stamped on the side of them and so they are easily identifiable, anyhoo he had a nosy around and said we dont list these but let me see if i can get hold of any. I left it with him and he rang me a couple of days later and said we can get hold of SKF bearings which were in the mounts already whcih apparently are really good quality bearings but they'll be £50 for the pair :wtf: or he can get some cheaper ones for £30 for the pair, but i thought i'd better get the SKF seen as they are what came out of the mounts so a few days and £50 later i had these,
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...IMG_0277-1.jpg
All i need to do now is fit them but i'm struggling for time lately, as soon as i can find some time another update of the fitting will follow!!
Andy
Cheers mate and yeah i think a fleece lined car cover will be a worthy investment in the near future :cool:Quote:

Thankyou for the nice comments everyone!!
Yeah I thought £50 was steep but I'd rather buy quality once than have to buy lesser stuff twice!!

Just blasted through this whole build, car looks awesome mate. Had my ups and downs on your styling though, when it was early mk1 style with gsi interior thought it looked naff but with the gte bumpers and the interior looking so clean, winner. Loving it mate :thumb:
When is the early bootlid and late spoiler going on Andy?
Lovely looking nova. Always good to see a nice freshly polished 'red' Nova lol.
As soon as I have some spare funds mate it'll be getting paint and fitted!!Quote:

Not updated this for ages but i'm going to be getting back on with this project.
First of all got the new bearings pressed into the eccentric topmounts at work and refitted them to the car:

Due to a change in personal circumstances my car has got to be moved from its current garage so i've managed to sort a council garage thats really close to my house, really happy with it to be honest because its so close and has got two big heavy duty steel doors on it compared to the usual up and over doors that you get on council garages. So i went over there this morning and did a bit of sweeping and tidying up ready for the car going in there next week:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...7/IMG_0621.jpg
Before, it was a bit tatty inside but i think is been empty for a while:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...7/IMG_0623.jpg
and after a quick sweep and removed the rack's someone had put up on the beams:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...7/IMG_0624.jpg
Much better.
Novas booked in at my work next Saturday for an MOT so that'll be when the next update will be!!
garage looks good dude, bit jealous really wish mine looked as safe and secure as this looks, good to see percy out and about again :)
Quick update:
Car passed its MOT today with only a couple of advisories so that's a good do!! Just need to get it taxed for summer now and it's all ready to go!!
Any updates on this? Just read from the first page.. Looks amazing mate! :)
Ive not updated this for ages but i have an update now so here it is:
The car has been in a garage which was quite far away from my house and so i havent really had chance to use it much but ive managed to sort a garage close to where im living now so i moved the car today but while i was moving it i stopped in at work and took the chance to do a few bits and pieces to the car.
First of all since i built it i havent serviced it so the first thing on the list was an oil and filter change:
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t.../IMG_10111.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1013.jpg
Feel a bit happier now thats done, bit of peace and mind!!
Next thing to do was fit the all important PNG membership stickers in the window, only a little thing but i like it!!
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1014.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1017.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1020.jpg
Looking much better now all nice and upto date in the window!!
Through endless years of being jacked up on the drive etc and not having a rubber pad on my jack the chassis had took a bit of a beating at the front near the engine bay and as a result some of the rubbery undercoat had come offso i treated the bare metal with some rusteze because we dont want any of the dreaded rust on the car and then coated it with some stonechip to protect it, again just for my piece of mind!!
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1015.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1015.jpg
I had noticed that one of the rear wheels had quite a lot of play in it when rocked side to side on the ramp so took the wheel off and the split pin had broken and come loose from the castlenut and the nut was undoing itself so got that nipped up just in time, didnt get any pics of this though as it was only a quick job!!
Next on the list was a very good clean as i havent washed the old girl in over a year so gave her a minting and here are the results:
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1030.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1029.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1028.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1026.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1025.jpg
Put one of these in for good measure:
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1021.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1023.jpg
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1024.jpg
Even gave the exhaust a bit of a polish because i was bored:
http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/IMG_1019.jpg
Thats all really, bit of a boring update to be honest but its an update. It was really good to drive the car today and hopefully now its closer to home as soon as we get the good wether i should be going out for a blast in it more often! Cheers for reading :thumb:
this nova is by far my favourite on here,
reg with grey speedlines, simple and effective with mk1 looks and mk2 inside
lovely car
The reg is similar to mine F198THT
Very nice pal, lovely shine!

Thats awesome, im loving the ramps in your workshop too, remind me of the flush sitting scissor lift type we used to have when i worked for the local honda dealership a few years back:thumb:
