today i had a great day working on the car, got pretty much all i wanted to done. its coming along great at the moment.
to start off i got the rear glass and surrounds in. as usual i used the strip method and some small angled prickers to peel up what the string didnt.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2351.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2353.jpg
after that i coupled up the brake pressure bleeder i borrowed from work.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2345.jpg
had 2 leaking brake nuts, just needed another nip up and they held pressure. bled all four corners and left the pressure bleeder connected for 2 hours. fortunately the compressor inside it never came on once which indicated i had no leaks. result. have got quite a decent pedal now.
held pressure\/\/

once i was happy with the brakes i slipped the cage in, fastened it down with stainless cap head bolts.

been on a few things this week, got the carpets cleaner than what they were. fitted them and trimmed them up so they fit around the roll cage weld in plates. got both door seals on but im yet to clean them. can see ill have to remove them to clean them but will see how it goes.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2437.jpg
the rear brace was finally tightened down with stainless cap head bolts. the nuts the other side do miss the coilovers, thank god.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2433.jpg
had a brand new screen and seal fitted today, think it was well worth it as the screen is gleaming clean.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2435.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2436.jpg
got the dash out and cleaned it up from any dirt and dust it had on it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...6032011113.jpg
the only plastic primer they had in halfords was red, owell had to use it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...6032011114.jpg
i then gave it a couple coats of satin black (as advised by nova_tek) and left it to dry. came back in the morning to find some parts had a reaction, havnt a clue why. so i rubbed down those areas and primed them again.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...9032011120.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...9032011122.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2438.jpg
i gave autovaux a call on thursday to order my engine rebuild parts. managed to get free delivery in as it was my first order. top quality service and the parcel arrived friday. cant complain.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011119.jpg
continueing from previous page....
i got cracking on with getting the crank out of the xe engine. took it to work so i can use the air gun, the crank pulley bolts wernt too tight once the airgun got hold of them.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011117.jpg
eventually got the crank out, im quite surprised how good the insides of this XE is. anyway, i opened up the oil pump to inspect the gears. now should i uprate the gears to steel ones?
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011118.jpg
got the LET block back to mine so i could clean it up ready for paint.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2439.jpg

cleaned up the crank and fitted the new mains bearings with plenty of oil. followed the procedure in the haynes manual using sealer on the rear bearing cap. torqued it down and hey presto.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...4032011123.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...5032011124.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...5032011125.jpg

update
as mentioned from my saturday post i took the head to work for the strip down.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011129.jpg
rather grubby you may think, well its what i thought aswell.
removed the valves and set them up in some sort of order, gave them a wire wheeling ready to be lapped in.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011133.jpg
eventually found a 5.5mm allen key (7/32nd tbh) and undone the grub screws so i can eventually attempt the porous head mod. the head hasnt gone porous yet but id rather it didnt. passed a rod through it all it make sure it was clear.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011132.jpg
placed it in the washing off tank and scrubbed it clean
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011135.jpg
washed it off with the hose and air lined it dry. came out rather well.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011136.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8032011137.jpg

hopefully more to come this week.

Good work dude - you're getting more and more thorough, like it :thumb:
Nice work mate. Have you go any close up pics of the crossmember cut-out? I'm at the early stages of a LET project, i'd like to keep the intercooler behind the bumper, couple of pics would be helpful. Cheers
Nice work dude, am rebuilding my head.. Its a sh*t job.
have you had a look earlier in the thread at the pics of when i cut it? there pretty much the only pics i have of it.Quote:

continued on with the head, got all valves lapped in and assembled.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...0032011139.jpg
got the XE inlet cam and LET exhaust cam bolted down and torqued correctly
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...0032011138.jpg
on with the porous head mod, went to b and q to buy the 8mm diameter aluminium tube.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...1032011140.jpg
cut a section down to near to 87mm as i could and tidied the end up.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...1032011143.jpg
went to trial fit the tube in the head to see how much tapping it will need to go in, only to hear myself go DOH!!!!
the head has already been repaired before. i had noticed when i removed the head there was a warranty void sticker which i could barely make out. presumabley it was a re-con head.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...1032011144.jpg
not to worry, i returned the tube to b and q for a refund, even with a minor bit missing. lol also gave the head a paint of silver to spruce it up.
down my garages today to bolt the head on to the block, first i had to fit the arp rod bolts. had the conrod caps countersunk by a machine shop to accomodate the bolts. torqued them down using the supplied lube.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2483.jpg
after that i drilled out the relavent rivets off the Z20LET head gasket and fitted it to the block.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2482.jpg
got the head on and torqued down
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2488.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2486.jpg
after that i concetrated on other bits that needed painting, dipstick tube and alternator bracket.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2546.jpg
both need a good clean and painting. having the rest of the cage powder coated this week along with my cam cover and cambelt cover. they'll end up some sort of grey, either anthracite or graphite.
updates to come shortly.
thanks for looking
bruce
Coming on well bud.
Given me the idea of using hex bolts on the water pump rather than the pain allens, Might not round off so easy then lol
Very nice dude, liking it a lot. Where did you get the baffle plate from? I'm after an 8v one myself, think I saw one in TV magazine.
You gotta love VHT silver paint on the inlet, works a treat ;)
the only reason i used hex head was that i had them easy available at work.Quote:

update
this week ive been receiving numerous parcels and sourcing parts from motor factors.
my friend down at LUK rang me to say my clutch and cambelt kit had arrived, so i trotted off down there to pick them up.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2990.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2991.jpg
once getting home i opened up the cambelt kit to realise it was the later type, not the early like i asked for. knowing it would be way too much hassle to try get it changed (as i had to wait 2 weeks for this one to arrive) and it being friday i got one ordered from autovaux which should be here monday.
my order from jbi motorsport eventually turned up, thank god. got 2 vernier pulleys, bottom pulley and a heat shield. all very nice and shiney. also got the throttle body and top hat gaskets from vauxhall
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2995.jpg
the roose hoses i ordered also came, i ordered the turbo coolant, breather and ancillary kit.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2992.jpg
spoke to a local motor factors and got my self a set of ht leads, plugs and a magic marley mahle oil filter. my injectors arrived also that i won on ebay. need to get them cleaned and checked for operation.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2996.jpg

today i went and picked up the front section of the roll cage from the powder coaters.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN2999.jpg
fitted it all in, trimmed the carpet to suit and then secured the sill trims in place

made a second trip down to the powder coaters to pick up cam cover, belt cover, rear gearbox mount and fuel pump mount.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN3017.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN3019.jpg
during the week i went down to fastening suppliers and picked up all the bolts for cam cover and belt cover. the bolts are A4 stainless but only charged me A2 stainless price. also got over sized washers for the belt cover but are too big. whats the correct size for them? these are 25mm wide.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSCN3020.jpg
got the majority of everything bolted on and it turned out like this..

ill hopefully get the cambelt on monday eve and take my injectors to be cleaned. going to have to sort the gearbox out ready to be painted.
surely missed something out, but thanks for looking
bruce
That engine's looking sweet now, rocker and belt cover looks awesome
Looking sweet mate, it's like I'm watching my build a few similar parts and colour schemes :d Now I know what my engine will look like with these colour lol
Is that a clutch kit for a F28? I need friction material for an F20 but need the pressure plate from a F28. Any chance your mate can find out if you can buy them seperately?
