View Full Version : Fuel strikes
I'd completely forgotten there was a tanker strike on, Sainsburys at Bridgwater were dry on Saturday but I just thought that was a one off. Other local fuel stations didn't seem that busy. Its only when I nosed the bbc website this morning and there's the usual OMG FUEL CRISIS OH NOES!!!!1!!1!!!!67!!! stories that I realised lol
This quote made me LOL, then want to slap the guy for being a prat:
One driver who works in Newquay said: "I'm pretty cheesed off.
"I can't get to work without diesel. Luckily I filled up on Friday and I shall be filling up again at the next petrol station."
Oh noes, I've used 5 litres of fuel, I best drive 50 miles to find another petrol station to fill up again before I run out and the sky falls on my head!
Anyways. Seems the strike is due to the drivers wanting their pay upped from £32,000 to £41,500 basic pay, so one assumes they'd get various benefits on top of that. Do you agree with the strike and its reasoning?

not ****d what they do, got a nova tank 3/4 full of petrol if we run out lol
typical stupid lorry drivers tho, if they do get the rise they'll pay more in tax as they'll be in the higher earners tax band (40/5 stoppages compared to 22%) so wont actually be any/much better off

Nope, they'll only get taxed 40% on the money they earn over the higher tax bracket, so will still be better off. Just not as much, but then I'd rather have a bigger tax bill but still have a couple hundred more in my pocket each month lol
oh bollocks.....into the 40% world, never mind, as RJ says, I;d sooner have the extra cash in my pocket and be taxed more on it lol

Agreed. The chairman of Vodafone was in the papers a few months back moaning that his yearly tax bill was nearly 2million quid lol. In which case he probably took home approx 3 million!
My heart bleeds for him!

drivers claiming higher wages delivering fuel adds to the cost of fuel which adds to the cost of living, which offsets the rise in their wages, so whats the point?
more misery for everyone. theyre just jumping on the 'we can hold the country to randsom just cos we're in a position to halt the supply of fuel for a few days' bandwagon. cant let them win, or everyone will be at it.
It's stupid. It isn't effecting anyone 'important' directly, it's just the general pubelick who are taking the bash. I had to queue for 30 mins this morning to top up because most of the petrol stations were closed with signs saying 'No Fuel', the ones which were open had masses of people faffing around with extra cans after they'd maxxed their tanks. Rediculous! I needed to get back up to Manc so I had a reason but I think 90% were just panicking.

Seconded! Greedy ****ers!
But how many outgoings do they get from that wage ?
Do they have to maintain their own trucks ? pay a percentage of fuel ? Food ?
It's easy to judge until you know the full story. But 32k does sound an awfull lot !
I understand this is the salary drivers for Esso, Shell, BP etc.
I could sympathize, and I do, with self employed, or small business truckers who DO have to maintain their own trucks, but I get the impression the majority of these guys get given the license, truck etc by the company.
In which case, fcuk IT, I'm getting me a HGV license asap! I'll happily drive about all day for £32k a year please :D

My thoughts exactly if the basic goes up to around 40k. I like trucking- Clicky:D (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ozVxiQcqFQ8)
the hazchem drivers are highly traained, & heavily legislated, the drivers have to work crazy shift patterns, they have to work nights, weekends, bank holidays, & christmas to make sure the british public can complain about the price of petrol.
I personally would want a shed load of money to drive about the country with 30tons of HIGH EXPLOSIVE LIQUID 4 ft behind me.

I'd think it could be bit of a rush lol. Danger Danger
Rush, I'd be driving like hell....
Thats how I used to drive my scania.

id tell them just to **** off simple as that, theres plenty of drivers that WILL do it for £32k a year :thumb:
saying that i used £180 worth of deisel in one day, just playing in the lanes, so that there days wage in tax for them lol
The protests have an after-effect in more ways than just fuel, yes fuel is even higher because greedy cnuting stations are upping the price due to higher demand.Ive heard food will be going up because its costing more to deliver, rail prices and buses, taxis and even fish and chips!!!! But yet OUR wages never go up to compensate for that. This country is fast becoming very expensive to live in.

Yet people that actually do have dangerous jobs get paid less. If they are delivering diesel then they dont have a case for such an arguement.

I agree. They have not had a decent pay rise for 10 years, yet the suits at Shell enjoyed a 15% pay increase last year alone.
Cheers

Have you seen the power of igniting diesel?
I know it takes more to get it going, but when it does it is more powerful than petrol

the UK arm of Shell makes fark all of its global billions.... Not defending Shell but its worth noting ;)
Generally, oil companies break even on petrol, at best make minimal profits. Their profits are from other uses of oil, not petroleum.

Just about EVERYTHING is affected by the rising cost of oil. Can you think of any think you do or use that doesn't involve some form of oil-based product?
I like this theory from another forum

just because theres panic buying doesnt mean people are buying more fuel over-all, it just means there buying more in one go.
considering the average car will only hold about a weeks worth anyway, its not going to be long lasting enough to benefit the economy at all.

they took the job, no one forced them into it at gunpoint. there not the only people in the world not to have an inflation linked payrise!
I wish I got a week from my fuel tank... 2-3 refills a week, yay lol

ive not had a payrise from work for nearlythree and a half years,am infact on the lookout for new work elsewhere as the boss dont relise my loaf of bread costs the same as his:mad:
They were offered a 14% pay rise, taking average earnings to £41,700.
Frankly, I find that absolutely disgusting.
Not even soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan have had a pay rise of that size. Totally outrageous, the haulage companies should have fired to entire lot of greedy b@stards and hired new drivers.
