I need to know if it fits first, and I don't have the time to be going down the breakers sadly.

im doing this right now and it dont fit, if its the lectric one you mean, the column bolts up to the standard rack fine but you have to fabricate mounts for it, not hard at all if you can weld,
if you mean hydraulic then the rack will fit but you need the make the hole where it goes through into the cabin bigger slightly

Jonboy; they are 1" longer, so you need to trip both ends and re-thread....

Best to get a Nova rack and do the measurements from there... I may have one for sale soon... ;)

Dan-F- Thanks mate, its not the EPAS I'll be using, too bulky to go in a nova really, having enough of a job getting one in my Escort lol

Will- Nice one, I'll get a rack and do some measurements :) unless your is for sale today lol

Craig Green has fitted the fluid type to his and you would assume it mounts up the same etc.

As Will has said, he had to shorten the track and make the hole bigger where it passes through the bulkhead.

I'm going to write a guide soon, basically the rack bolts straight on after you have opened out the hole into the cabin for the larger bulk of the PAS rack.

Track rods need shortening or threading down to narrow the track width.

Use a 12v pump from a Saxo/Clio or mk4 Astra (keep it GM LOL), Use a hydraulic hose specialist to make up hoses from pump to rack etc. One is high press feed, the other a low press return. Add a reservoir depending on pump & use a 30A relay to operate the pump.

Just finished mine. Feels good. Not a very good turning circle however.

[edit] All the info is in my WIP thread (incl pics) , though its all well spaced throughout the build.

Nice one Craig, we just thought whilst Gavs nova is in bits it would make sense to address the steering.

I'll check your thread for more info :)

Be sure to attach the pipes to the rack & get them tight & sealed before puting in the engine. Its damn tight for space even with my smallblock & I've got a small leak, not the easiest thing to tighten up.

Best mod I ever did!

My turning circle is OK though?

Heres the rack..

A bulkhead grommet/seal I made for the new larger hole. I put one both sides to eliminate engine bay noises.

The column to rack UJ will fit as per normal.

The rest is essentially pump, pipes & wiring.

Hope it helps. I'll write a full guide when I'm next bored.

No my turning circle is blatantly crap compared with a std rack unless I'm really used to my Fiesta (sure I'm not wrong) Its probably on par with Saxo/106 turning circle. ie Dreadfull. lol

Thanks for the info, had I of known you were running that setup I'd of come looking for you at PV.

I'll get a rack sorted asap, thanks again

Hi

If its power steering your after is it not less hastle and tidier to fit the Corsa B EPAS to the nova rack, either standard or quickrack?

Jonlem

I prefer the EPAS as its whats in my escort, best bit is the option to adjust the assist which conventional PAS can't do.

This is for a mates car though and he wanted to do it for the costs point of view, mods to fit the rack are simple enough and it won't involve any mods to the shell which has already been painted.

epas isnt that expensive the controllers can be had cheap

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=250256969701

if the shel has been painted youd probablt be better off with the epas at least the mods would be hidden behind the dash, with the hydraulic your going to have to cut a hole in the bulkhead

That you cant see when th eengine is in, nor will it damage the paintwork!

Horses for courses IMO... EPAS has its advantages, and is a 'tidier' option I spose... EPAS/Hydraulic is easy and 'fit and forget'

Being that the car its going in has no dash there is no way of hiding anything lol

As Will said the hole can be hidden easy enough.

I DO agree EPAS is a better system but its not what the guy wants, I paid £40 for my EPAS and £80 for the box of tricks

DAN-F

i took my epas out of a scrap corsa for free, and the box was £45 so a cheap one for me l

Its an either/or choice of the 2.

I fail to see why one is better than the other. The EPAS columns were plagued with issues & recalls from Vauxhall so that put me off & I got a 'wet' rack cheap. Likewise my pump cost someone over £180, I got it for £20 barely used.

I had the Corsa B epas system on mine.. but took it off again cos i didnt have time to make it fit properly, worked tho. Now it sits in the garage collecting dust, waste of money that was.

From what I'm aware one system was and the other wasn't, however you can't beat the feel of a car without PAS, in some cases you just need a little bit of assist which is why IMO the EPAS system works so well.

I am suprised more people haven't gone down the route of the PAS you have though Craig, it seems a sensible enough conversion and it must make a nova a far nicer car to drive.

Thats the thing, my car has always had really heavy steering, from when I bought it as a std GSi & throughout ownership. My mates GTE/XE with a far lower ride height had lighter steering than mine. So crunch time was fitting the PAS.

I was led to believe the Corsa EPAS column would bolt straight in to a Nova, now I'm hearing you have to weld in the column support to the bulkhead - can any of you chaps confirm which is true?

I am very keen to fit PAS - after 4 or 5 years out of the Nova, I will probably hate it without lol

Hey Mart!

Yeah, with the dash out you will need to sort new upper column mounts to the bulkhead..... One of the reasons I fitted a 'wet rack' system. (which is a ball ache in itself)
