View Full Version : What car would you choose to.......

Quite interested in doing some banger racing and cant decide what car would be up for the task lol. Im thinking good ol mk3 cav 2lt 8v as they are dirt cheap. The rwd ones are fetching more money.

If I could find one for good money a 2lt capri would make a serious weapon on track as they are just a tank lol.

Was also thinking Volvo but the last ones I watch the rear axle just fell off, even though the rest of the car some good hammering.

agreed but I always thought that volvo 240-245's were strong but after watching their wheels just fall off Ive changed my mind lol.

just chain the axle on!

Philsutton
15-06-08, 07:43 PM
lol allowed? Just been reading the rules and you pretty much cant do anything bar but a roll bar in a bolt doors up.

bangerbrian
15-06-08, 07:46 PM
Some tracks do, just ask around or go on www.ovalbangerchat.co.uk (http://www.ovalbangerchat.co.uk) a good forum :) most tracks allow you to weld your driver door for protection but thats only if your doing the unlimited.

(the forum is down atm, changing the server)

Cavvys are good and theres plenty around. i raced a 1300 mk1 astra loved it, but got folded lol

You cant modify the cars in anyway apart from the rollbar and door plate. Make sure its a bigger car so you have more crumple zone, seen golfs etc half in length!

my old man used old jags then filled them with concrete so they didnt bend lol things were as slow as sh~t thou, all good fun.

I couldn't drive anything I liked in banger racing, would be a shame to use a Capri for instance. I'd use something thats common and massive, like others have said, Cavalier, carlton, nissan sunny saloon, mondeo, scorpio etc

mate what you need is a ford granada/cortine poabaly the first or a 740 volvo, these two types of cars are what my good friend ernie wins his trophys with. totaly solid cars pic them up from the scrappers for next to nothing.;)

I would use a Hummer:thumb:

Philsutton
15-06-08, 09:01 PM
A hummer would decimate all lol, probably get the same effect if you were to get 4 big jags in a train and follow a much smaller car into a bend.

prepare to risk life and limb(as you know)!!!. my freinds "back" was broke as he was pushed into a wall by a capri ,he was in a "lada" which actualy took some sh1it out there, but was finaly kinked in half by the capri.of which put a young lad in a wheelchair:(.

As much as I love the Cavs, thats your best option. A RWD would throw you right round with a little nudign, where as the Cav has the FWD power to pull it out. They're pretty tough (they last me months of road use) and they're cheap as mentioned. Pretty strong as well. But go for a Calibra if you can, I mean, who wouldnt like to see one of those getting smacked ****less?

Philsutton
15-06-08, 09:26 PM
^^ funny you should say that, we might have one laying round complete just missing its engine, box an maybe brakes. I reckon a calibra could take some right abuse.

Yeah I'm prepping mine for some mid night forestry road thrashings. They'll handle like a boat but on a track it wouldnt matter a ****.

Phil, i've had quite a fair bit of expirience with banger racing as i've helped and watched a close friend prep and race.

Basically, stay well away from vauxhalls. The front-ends seem to cope OK, but they fold in the rear. I'l dig out some pictures of various Cavs and Astras - They were screwed.

Jap cars tend to survive, and they have the extra poke. I'd personally go with a primera or sunny (depending on class).

Or prehaps something like a scirrocco ? They're pretty beefy !

Tranny vansit?

Corsa C? Someone I know wrote off his fiesta on the back of my mates corsa, the corsa just had some damage to the pastic bumper lol.

How about a 4wd celica?

185s are build like brick outhouses, so would be ideal. Comparatively expensive though, unless you get a really shagged one.

Calibras are quite strong and get raced with the bigger stuff ie: jags and granadas but i would go for a mondeo prefably an estate as they are hard and are pretty easy to bend out once you have been smashed into.
Jap cars are pretty strong and popular like bluebirds and primeras. The problem being though bluebirds tend not to take much punishment from the rear, but are strong upfront.

lol no way am I taking on a full grid of jags an grannies in a calibra.

One of the students at work has a mondeo which isnt going to go through its next mot very easily so might have that. Having said that I get the impression a mondeo is a folder lol

Oh an its a saloon so extra foldage before I get hurt

Some one raced a cally in world final at wimbo against full of grannys etc, IIRC it did well... mondeos tend to be a popular bangers nowdays

not a vauxhall, there too soft, ford transit is what you want, all a ford is good for really!! your high up so less likely to injure yourself (as much) strong metal plates over the doors, roll cage, we put 17" scooby wheels and tyres on, whick were still intact after the accedent!! where you goin?? barford??

that hit a wall doing roughly 60mph out and walked away!! if you did that in a vauxhall youd be in a wheelchair

The pro's use Granadas, but good luck finding one! If you do, keep it locked up or a fellow banger racer will steal it from you!

Ive seen cavs and mondeos up against grannies, and they dont last 5 minutes!

Jim Mcrae
16-06-08, 08:51 PM
Cavs are solid, wouldnt be a bad choice

Mike
16-06-08, 11:20 PM
Cav all day long, cheap, fast'ish and built like a tank. Good for ram raids too as the boots are huge.

Want to buy mine Phil? Needs a new clutch and some brakes mind?!

Dod

No brakes'll make it go faster....

The mondeos are pretty much banned at my local track as well as blue birds and primeras (that is bomber class anyway) and I have to change it back to carb. **** doing that to a mpi 16v mondeo, too much hassle for for the sake of it really. I'm looking for a spi astra, corsa cav now

Mike
25-06-08, 05:22 PM
i still have my Cav Phil :thumb:

its not spi though is it? PLus if it had rear brakes I would have lol

draper
25-06-08, 06:38 PM
why are mondeos, bluebirds and primeras banned phil ?

Philsutton
25-06-08, 06:41 PM
apparently they are built like tanks ( they arent banned from bangers but they've made it hard to use them). This was looking at the local track forum.

Making them carb is going to be a right pain as you need to make a custom inlet and then sort out the ignition side of things out.

Mike
25-06-08, 07:27 PM

Nope, its an MPi mate lol rear brakes are still fitted as i CBA to remove them lol
