Ok i think this is basically correct....

Offset is the distance that the wheel is from the hub in mm, eg Vauxhalls are NORMALLY et49 (et=offset). and Fords are normally et38 (i think) so there is a 11mm difference between the two so if you put a set of ford wheels on your vaux then there would be an 11mm gap so they wont fit correct and would wobble etc etc.

Some companies vary what offset they make there wheels to, eg: Compomotive manufacture wheels with any offset between et00-et49. and so other companies only manufature wheels to one offset, eg:MOMO whos wheels are all et38(i think)

I am pretty sure that Vauxhalls have the highest factory set offset, this why it can get difficult finding wheels although there are enough companies making them now.

Some of this might be wrong but this is what i am led to belive it all means.

hope it helps a little bit, no doubt some of the geeks will explain it better for you if you need it

It's the distance (in mm) from the mounting surface, to the center line of the wheel.
