having problems with the compression on my e16se engine, having just built it the compression is far too high. I'm thinking the head, which was on a rally car must have used pocketed pistons of some kind. It looks like its had loads skimmed off it, heres a pic, tell me your opinions.

the pistons, bore and headgasket of mine are all standard.

thinking i may need to source a thicker gasket or different head:confused:

cheers

You can get a gasket called a head saver. the std thickness is 96mm if you want to work out how much its had off it. what did you measure the CR to be?

you say youve just built it? have you ran the engine?

oil in the bores from the rebuild will cause a high compression reading.

OE gaskets are available with extra thickness (you can tell by the notches on the side) you will need to calculate what your new comp ratio is first, if it is high due to skimming.

Its because its a 1300 head!

The majority of the squish area on the 8v engines is in the cylinder head. You are compressing a 1600 into a 1300 squish chamber.

You are looking at approximately 12:1 comp ratio.

i was thinking that may be the problem aswell mc. i'll work out the ratio and see if its gonna be anywhere near 12:1. the compression test on each bore was of my tester at over 300psi per cylinder, plugs out and throttle open. the engine has only been turned over and never run.

blooody hell, the head on my 1.6 was skimmed 3 times to remove some corrosion, and only just cought were the spark plugs come through, yours has eaten away at it. mine is running 130psi compression with a skim and new head gasket, if that helps.
