am i right in thinking that all the small block blocks are the same height and that all the main crank bearings are the same distance from the block faces?

the reason i ask is id like to put a 1.6 crank and rods into a 1.2 block with 1.2 pistons, which i think would achieve a 1.5

which 1.2? cos the little end bushes are several different sizes...

My old fave was the 1.3 crank & rods with 1.2 pistons. gives 1400 hi-comp. should give you about 90bhp as std. & all the 1300 tuning stuff will work

All Nova 8v rods are the same length IIRC, so you could use the 1600 crank with 1200 rods, pistons. Pretty sure that all mains and big end journal sizes are the same too.

I'm not 100% on the block height as the 1200 had the shortest stroke IIRC, hopefully for you the pistons are shallower to compensate.

SO could I use a GTE Crank (1600), 1400 Block and a 13sr head? If so, whats my best option for Pistons and rods?

Depends what cc you want and if you want to bore the cylinders...

Also bear in mind all the tinkering is likely to have adverse effects on the compression ratio, especially putting a smaller capacity cylinder head [like a 1300 head on a 1600 engine] on will hike the CR up.

Best thing you can do is do a bit of homework on what will work best.

I've seen the 12 and 13 heada on the 1400 Block and thought the steel crank'd be a healthy addition.

I've been planning a build like this for a while, so i'm gathering info here just.

Sorry for post Jacking Burgo and cheers Tom.

I am pretty certain 1.6's & 1.2's have different little end sizes, I will look at my really boring piston catalogue later

ok 1.2ST 77.8 bore 62.9 stroke. little end 20mm
top of piston to little end 35.8mm
overall height of piston 65mm

c16se 79 bore 81.5 stroke little end 18mm
top of piston to little end 28mm
overall height of piston 48.4mm

basically the 1.2 & 1.3 ohc carb models >87 are really compatible and the later 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 ohc efi engines from 87> are really compatible. the later engines were reworked & the pistons are completely different to the earlier ones.
