No..............
Mine dont knock or bang at all.
Are the roller bearings knackered?
Silly question but there not upside down are they?

you talking about the rears ?
if so, yeh mine makes a noise every now and then, usually when i go over bumps or turn side to side quickly, cant deside whether theres something rolling around behind the side trim, or its the top of the shock(s). i wouldnt go so far as to say it does my head in, but its annoying for sure, somet i need to take a look at.

These are not the adjustables ones but same principle.
The domed bit on the top faces up.
I have seen them before facing down into the wheel well !!!
I doubt you do have them wrong way but thought i would check.

Cheers

lol your gonna laugh at this, they are facing the other way, dome into the wheel well.. i was supplied the shocks ready built and told on good authority it was right. Just had it all tracked up now... sod it... problem is now has the damage been done or can i just flip them round.

Some of the older ones mount the other way up, mine do, however the circlip holding the bearing into the top mount should always be face down.

Hi mate,

Should be ok to just flip them over.
Only damage that may have been done is the circlip that holds the bearing in place in the topmount would have been taking all the weight of the car and may be bent.
Circlips easy to fix and only cost few pence from an engineering supplier so no major damage
That may be causing the bearing not to be tight in the top mount hence you knocking noise.
Stick a picture up of how they are at the moment just to be 100% sure before you go turning things around.

You taking it to PV at the weekend?
Could have a quick look as i will be there on Sunday.

Yeah will be going to PV, but really want to sort it before hand, driving a full 240 mile round trip like that dont really fill me with confidence..

looking at these pics mine are totally wrong http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.reidracing.co.uk/images/carbuild/suspension14.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.reidracing.co.uk/suspension-photos.asp&h=135&w=180&sz=9&hl=en&start=30&um=1&tbnid=BVBlUw7wIQ5O_M:&tbnh=76&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dnova%2Badjustable%2Btop%2Bmounts%26st art%3D18%26ndsp%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dco m.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7ADBF%26sa%3DN

Got any detailed pics so i can have some reference to sort this asap. Got plenty of clips at work to replace them with. Cheers fella.

If you can see the circlip in the top mount you have them the wrong way up.

Also if they are eccentric and you need the dome upwards you need to modify the top mount or the turret to get full adjustment.

Christ amlighty. The mounts are the same as in then pics of the blue nova. So dome upwards, circlip facing into the wheel well with the possibilty of modification?

As I said in my first reply the old style ones look exactly the same as the ones in your picture but mount the other way up due to the circlip being at the opposite end. Mine have the dome facing down and the circlip facing down

As long as you have the circlip facing down they are right :thumb:

Have you checked the big nut on the top to make sure its tight?

Mine were knocking once and couldnt find where the hell it was coming from, turned out to be the nut was slightly loose and every bump instead of suspension working the hole shock was moving up and down slightly in the bearing and when it went down it banged on the metal of the top mount.

Worth checking, its the simple things that get overlooked.

they still shouldnt really knock the way round they currently are. the spherical bearings could be worn tbh.

they should allways go circlip side down, no matter what anybody else says. the circlip is to hold the bearing in place and is not deisgned to take the weight of the car. if this was the case then there would just be a circlip on either side. the nipple type art goes at teh top, so once lowered on its wheels the bearing will be pushing against the nipple type part and distributing the weight through the alloy top mount and not through the circlip...
