What I?m planning on doing this winter is to take my nova of the road and rebuild the engine and replace the gearbox. The question is, I want to turbo it! Has anyone turboed a carbed 8v b4, if so what problems am I going to come up against? It?s currently running a Weber 32/34 with a full scorpion system and a Courtney high torque cam. What?s the best way to lower the comp ratio cheaply as it?s not going to run high boost. I was told that a 1.6-gsi head would lower the comp ratio as it has a larger combustion chamber but I?m not sure if that would be enough. Also how do I adjust the timing so that it retards instead of advances?? Any help would be much appreciated.

i know courtenay do a 1.4 8v conversion but i think that it MAY need to be using injectors for that to work

u can insert spacers or 2 head gaskets to lower the compression as well but this is not ideal

not sure if u can turbo with the carb but hopefully someone else will be able to help ya

one thing i will point out is im not sure if the 1.3 inlet manifold is the same as the 1.6 head and therefore u might not get em to fit together

u might be better off lookin for a 1.4SRi engine and loom and buyin the courtenay kit for that

hi,

the renault 5 uses a carb + turbo so it must be possible somehow...

perhaps not with that carb tho?

Why bother?

Thanks for the help, I want to try and do this converstion just to be different. I know that a 2l lump would be easyier to convert to but i want to keep the weight down.

i looked into this and basically buy a r5gtt as that would be a good 'doner' car, take carb of that, turbo and millions of vacuum pipes and intercooler!!

u can do it BUT the engine buy will be far to messy due to vacuum pipes everywhere:(

The Fiat Punto GT runs a 1.4 Turbo, I don't Suppose you can Incorporate anything?

give courtenay a phone

they make turbo conversions for nova's and they should be able to tell u if it can be done and what you'll need

if all it comes down to is getting a 1.6 head and rigging up some piping to your carb then it shouldnt be too difficult

on the other hand it might be easier and cheaper to go with the 1.4SRi + turbo i mentioned earlier

i knwo the 1.4SRi lump can be had for ?100 and courtenay do a direct turbo kit for this

Using the 1.6 head on the 1.3 head will drop compression to about 8-9:1 You wont have to worry about the unreliability of a tripple gasket. You will need to use the inlet and management for the 1.6 too. You'll need the vane airflow meter and the rising rate fuel regulators. The 1.3 inlet has different size ports (larger) to the 1.6. I think a corsa TDi manifold and will come in handy. I've thought long and hard about this conversion and know the basics required. Its not that difficult.

Courtney DO NOT make turbo kits they might sell them but rest assured that they only buy them and re package them.

There was a post on here about a South African company that make the whole kit for most Vaux 8v engines and the performance figures were quite impressive.

It was about 6 weeks ago have a look through the archives and see if you can find it, was also posted on MIG.

Thanks for the info, I have made some progress today though, have adapted a 1.2 manifold to take an escort rs turbo. Also got a gte head with the large ports for ?20 from the local scrappy. I?m thinking about going down the injection route from a 1.6 rather than modding my Weber. Will keep you informed of my progress.

Some good advice there guys, dont forget you can also lower the CR by opening out the chamber, you can probably safely get a couple of cc taken off the top of the pistons.

As far as timing goes, as soon as it comes on boost there will be no (or less, ie negative) vacuum, so therefore the advance/retard mechanism in the distrubitor will knock the timing right back anyway.

injection is the way to go - u can run more boost out of it, carbs dont like too much boost.

the dizzy has mechanical advance for revving, the vacumn advance is there to help light throttle / idle.
