which would you have, 8v or 16v? and why
real reasons, not jut "cos their better"
:D

Lee

Are we talking big block small block here, or just the number of valves?

Adam

16v.
Because there better.

Seriously

8v, engines are abundant, parts are easy to get, nice & cheap conversion. Lack horsepower in comparision to a 16v though.

16v, revvy, heavy but ultimatly rewarding.

Philsutton

16v anything else is flogging a dead horse. 16v bits are cheap an easy to get now so there is seriously no reason to go for a 8v. People claim that the 8v's can take more abuse and are strong which is a lie as they are the same expect they make zero power hence why nothing ever breaks because none of the engine is ever strained.

saying that my Cerbera only has 2 valves per cylinder and still makes 360bhp lol

Philsutton

yeah but 360bhp from 4.2lt N/A using that set up is pretty damn good really. All the yank V8's need alot more capacity to get that power.

Well im a tight bastid and cant justify spending silly money on conversion shafts or 22 spline TD items so an 8v with a turbo and N2O will do me just fine lol and will make the same power as a standard LET but wont last as long:(

That statement is so unvelievably contradictory lol.

Jack

The 8v with turbo and N2O may well make the same power as a LET. For about 5 minutes. Until it blows up and needs a rebuild. lol

Nova_Loon
04-06-08, 10:46 PM
well 8v if its a 1.2/1.3/1.4 /1.6 but if its a 2.0 or 2.0 turbo it got to be 16v lol

Back to 8v vs 16v. I think it would be better if we knew what you wanted from the engine and what it's going to be used for. Standard or modified, etc.

davehaynes
04-06-08, 11:33 PM
nah i was just wondering what the advantages/drawbacks where of each lol

Ok, well I'm not sure if this is a myth or not, but I believe the 2.0 8v has more torque or a better spread as standard than the 16v.

call me old fashioned, i dunno, but personally i like 8v carbs myself, keep things simple, which is usually the best in the long run.

The issachunt nova seemed to last longer than 5 minutes

Plus, I like to be different, hence the reason I've stuck with the 1.6 8v ;)

Also, Lee is gay and he drives a 2.0 ;)

myth.. the 2.0 16V has more torque than the 8v lol.

iirc that myth stemmed from the older golf engines where the 8v was a better puller etc.

Jim the Issac Hunt nova had a seemingly properly built 2.0 8v engine... as opposed to a scrappy racers build ;)

Surely that goes for any engine though Stu, if it's built properly, it'll last...unless CP drives it  lol

Stu beat me to it, its all lies about the 8v having more torque, the 16v makes more and low down so its all rubbish.

IMO there is no advantage of a 8v (if were talking big blocks anyway), as the main reason, cost is irrelevant now as c20xe's can be had for pennies and are cheap to source parts.

Theres only 1 advantage IMO and thats maintainance, if you can live with the drop in power. The 8v's also sound a lot nicer, theyre not as raspy.

Still rather have the XE though :)

well ive just changed the engine in the loon from a 8v to 1600 16v from a corsa gsi and the diffrence is stupid !

And ive also got a gte 8v of course running around 120 bhp and when i got back into it i wasnt not impressed with it. compaired to the standard 16v its slow. really if you want a good engine sod 2ltrs go for a 1600 16v!

yea but ck one here had a 140 bhp small block xe and beat lots of xe things. so if your not going to do any tunning id say 2ltr yea for speed. but for very little money you can have a faster smallblock!

Funny you say that as when I had my nova gte my mate had a corsa gsi, both standard engine wise, I always beat him by about a cars length.

Ive always stuck with 8vs as they are simple and more reilable in my experience. Ive always thrashed my 8vs and never had anything major go wrong, my mates corsa on the other hand was always having sensors replaced.

Personal choice really, they're all good engines although the 16vs make more power.

yeap, but then again youd only be making standard XE power so a little money on a XE sees MORE power

ive changed my mind 27times this morning about my corsa lol

Yea im all for a 2ltr thats why im building one aswell :D. But after seeing what my smallblock goes like after a little money it would be supid quick. and the fact you dont have to spend that bit of money on a new mount, suspension for the extra weigh. unless you want a really fast car for track like the lads on here and have to spend alot of money making it handle well ect just cant see the pro if its only a road car?

Welsh Dan
05-06-08, 12:05 PM
If you're buying a suspension kit anyway, the difference in cost for a 'bigblock' one is negligable, same goes for the cost of the mount aswell in my opinion.

My viewpoint is this: Having the engine bay (or complete chassis) stitch welded+plated benefits the handling regardless of what engine is fitted, and when this work is carried out, boxing out the chassis leg for alternator clearance isnt much more work. If i was to change to a different engine, I'd need a new fuel tank, lines, fuel pump and engine mounts anyway, as mine is a 1.2 carb model with worn engine mounts. To justify all the labour and money going into the shell to get ready for any engine, I'd prefer to go for a 2L16V as it is the best starting point in terms of factory power.

I doubt they weigh much more than a nova, both have around 100bhp and both do 0-60 in 9 seconds.

I don't know what it is but I've always liked the 8v motors, they seem to be a little more raw, whereas the 16v are more refined.

I'm a creature of habit though and have always had 8v's, and I'm stuck with it for the time being since I've spent loads of time building up a new one. However, one day I quite fancy a 16v as there is far more potential tuning wise.

Corsa is about 210Kg heavier than the Nova.

(Carfolio says Nova GTE = 820Kg, Parkers say Corsa Sport = 1030Kg. No figures for Corsa or Nova GSi).

Aye, as Jack said, the corsa is MUCH heavier.
0-60 times are similar because the corsa has a touch more power. :)

16v's aren't unreliable.
If people get a bad one, they automatically assume there all like that.
For instance, ive done about 6k with my 1600 16v, and it gets a lot of abuse daily, and ive never replaced any sensor on it so far....

Power to weight puts the Nova about 20-30bhp up on the Corsa though. DO they both use similar gear ratios?

Adam
05-06-08, 04:04 PM
Both CR boxes usually.
So should have similar ratios

So that will explain why my 1.6 16v Corsa Sport runabout feels so boring! my corsa is boggo standard with 103bhp, the Nova was last Rolling roaded at 112bhp, since then have added a polished head with inlarged inlets etc, which should see it clear 115bhp.

between the 2 , forgeting the BHP difference, i personally would prefere the 8v engine but that might be because i've always driven 8v and have only just started on the 16v route.

pfft, lies lol

I dont think people realise just how overweight the corsa is, the base model ones are about the same as the Nova GTE's but its the GSI's that are like small ships. Even with 2lts in they rarely breaking into the 14s on the 1/4 mile.

If were talking standard V standard small block I would go 8v purely because the ghey crap inlet design annoys me and is over kill IMO.

2 valves need big capcity

4 valves can be smaller capacity and make same power, therefore lighter handle better.

not necessarily.... you can lash up the design of the 4 valves setup so you need big capacity to get power lol
