Just a quick one. When I turn the hazard switch on, the dashboard indicator telltale doesn't light up, but the light inside the hazard switch does instead. Is it Ok to have a seperate telltale for the hazard switch? The relay still ticks, so the audio telltale is there.

The MOT manual I'm looking at isn't too clear about this...

My guess is the dash warning is necessary....

I'd agree with Craig... I'm 98% sure you need a dash warning light.

hmm strange why its not working. Jack, maybe a good idea to try and trace the wires, dunno if you can without whipping out the dash though

You know its that long since I've driven a Nova but do they have the dash telltale?

I'd assume some kind of warning is required and if the actual switch lights up IMO that should be ok.

Yep, the indicator light on the dash flashes :thumb:

Tom, yeah there's the <- -> lamp on the dash which lights up with the indicators, but in my case not the hazard. However, the hazard switch itself flashes when on.

The manual does say this:

4. Check that the hazard warning device is present, secure and operates using only one switch with the ignition switched both on and off. While it operates, check that all the direction indicators flash simultaneously and the 'tell-tale' is working correctly.

Note: A 'tell-tale' may be audible or visual, it is not required if one or more direction indicators on each side can be seen by the driver from the driver's seat.

You can hear the indicator ticking noise when the hazards are on, I would assume this would count as an audible telltale. Doesn't say the hazards have to use the same telltale as the indicators too, just that it should work correctly. Which, if you assume the hazard switch itself to be the telltale, it does.

Tis odd as to why the dial set warning light isn't working (assuming the dial set telltale SHOULD light up with the hazards), I was under the impression all the indicator stuff goes through the hazard switch anyway - so if the stalk left/right controls work, then the hazard should too.

thats a wierd one that, maybe a wire has been snagged going from the hazard switch to the clocks?

but from that quote it seems that it should not matter as you say you can hear the relay click so thats an audible warning and also the light flashes on the switch which is your visual warning and that can clearly be seen from the drivers seat...

why dont you give an mot test centre a quick call to confirm this?

try another set of clocks...will atleast tell you if its the clocks or the wiring and go from there.
You're right though it does sound like it should be fine for mot.

Don't have a spare set of dials (well I do, but they're Astra/Cav ones and I cba with fitting them just yet lol). Although the dial set telltale lights up with the indicators, so I would assume the dials are fine.

See what happens tomorrow I guess. If it does fail on that, it shouldn't be too hard to rig up some form of bodge to the warning lamp on the dials, it'll just be a pain in the backside.

I can just never remember [not that I really took much notice] the dial telltale lighting up with the hazards on.

I really need to drive it more lol

popped into the garage to chekc mine and realised the clocks werent fitted haha. ran upstairs n grabbed them, pluged them in. bearing in mind this is on my sport so 1986 mk1. i pressed the hazard button and hey presto no tell tale in the dash lights up. only the hazard button itself. so maybe its supposed to be like that...??? lol

Would have to be really picky if they failed it for that!

bring your nova to me, and i will put a ticket on it lol

does the indy warning light on the clocks work when you use the indicators with ignition on?

you only need one warning device to tell you hazard lights are on
(with and with out ignition on)
if the switch flashes when turned on it should pass :thumb:
good luck

If it fails tomorrow, I may well do lol The warning light on the dials works with the indicators, so thats all good.

I guess that must be the way its designed then... odd!

you should be fine then!
as long as hazard lights work with ignition on and off and switch lights up and flashes, its passed on that :)

its just everything else lol

good luck
