Hi guys,

need urgent help - my wee SR is seems to have a stuck choke.

Its an Auto on a 1.3SR. Revs sit at over 4000! I've driven the car today to work (over 20 miles) and the revs were still high - by the time I'd got to work I could smell the clutch burning - had to kleep my foot on the brake to keep the damn car from pulling away from me!

Can anyone help me and advise how I can fix this

Urgently needed

Are you sure the accellerator cable/carb linkage isn't sticking as that seems mighty high?

It's years since I looked at one of those carbs (Pierburg 2e3?) but I'm sure you should be able to remove the auto choke and adjust it...

is the throttle pedal in around the same place? I dont think the choke could push the revs up to 4000 eather.

I'll check when I get in tonight...

I might have pulled the wrong cable when I was trying to find the speedo cable when changing the bulbs on my dash yesterday! Probably pulled the throttle cable in error and its stuck...

Just so I'm 100% sure where about in the engine bay does the throttle cable come out from the cab? I know where the clutch cable is...

However would this cause the engine to slutter and run after the ignition was turned off or is that just the heat...

Our SR used to do the same thing also....
Especially over run, think its due to it running rich and getting hot or something like that. I had 5 different Pierburg 2e3 carbs for that engine and they were all rubbish. Auto choke never used to work properly on any of them

Ade, if you just locate the accellerator cable in the drivers footwell you will be able to work out where it enters the engine bay [maybe check the pedal mounting whilst you're there]. Furthermore, from the other end, check the cable is located securely in the linkage [on the side of the carb] and follow the cable from the carb making sure its not caught and able to operate freely.

Also check the linkage for operation as these can sometimes become covered in crud and stick in places. With the engine running, rev the car by operating the linkage and if something is wrong it should become obvious.

The overrun in this cause is probably caused by the over fuelling whilst the engine is being turned off, although it sometimes can be a symptom of incorrect timing.

also the auto choke is plugged in with the black with yellow wire goin to it , try unpluging it see if it makes a difference

sorted it! As Mr Beverley suggested its a sticking throttle cable. It's all scabbed up with sh1te.

Had to control the revs by sticking my foot under the accelerator and pulling it back up

lol

God why do we put outselves through this hell with these old tin cans!

All I gotta do now is clean it up as well as suss out why I get a grinding noise on rull lock (dust shields I'm guessing...)

Also think a bearings on its way out - 40mph I get the usual darth vader vrmmmmm noise...

actually I hadnt soprted it - I thought I had but now I've properly sorted it.

It turns out that when I'd pulled the wrong cable removing the dash (thinking it was the speedo cable) I'd pulled the throttle one and in doing so had pulled the rubber bung out from the firewall. This wasnt put back and as such it pulled the accelerator down causing the engine to rev!

MUPPET!

Put it back in its hole and now its fine.
