I have found a bit of rust under the spare tyre well and was wondering if you have any tips on the best way to treat it. Someone said to use "Hammerite Kurust", is this any good?

Apprantly you just get rid of any loose rust and then paint this stuff on without removing the main rust and after a few hours this will turn the rust back into metal. You then put your top coat on.
My question is does this really work? Because I would have thought that the best thing to do would be to remove all traces of the rust back down to clean bare metal.
Someone else told me to get rid of all the rust and then use a zinc primer.

How do you guys deal with any rust that you find?

Cheers

Kurust is good, it turns the metal to an alkali or summat so it cant rust further. Best method would be to wire brush it back, apply the kurust, sand it back when dry & zinc prime it.

Best of all methods IMO.

Kurust is rubbish IMO, I used some to attack some remnants of rust on the saloon after grinding most of it off - 3 weeks later the same patches had rusted through again!

Thanks Stuart, very intresting site http://www.bilthamber.com/ Has anyone tried "Bilt Hamber" products?

It seems that if you can keep the humidity level in your garage to below 35% it will virtually eliminate the corrosion of mild steel.
I remember seeing an advert for a sort of tent in a classic car magazine, into which you put your car, zip it up, and then a motor dries all the air out. I suppose its like a dehumidifer. I think it was aimed at classic car concours compeditors with a few grand to spare.

Any other advice on keeping the rust at bay?

Cheers

I've got their autoclay... I know its not in the same ball park as rust treatment, but as a basis for the rest of their product, it does exactly what they claim (and more), its good value and easy to work with.

I will be getting some rust conversion/prevention stuff from them soon as they are based about 5 mins from my office in Basildon

Ok my Bilthamber stuff arrived on sat there, so i set about trying it out.

Following the instructions i mixed it at a ratio of 1 part deox C powder to 19 parts hot water into a plastic tub,

The item i tried it on wa sthe hanger for the fuel pump so its prety exposed to a lot of ****e from the roads etc, So i place it in the tub and left it for about 48 hours just giving it a clean with a old tooth brush to remove the rust as it dissolved.

So on with the images

So this is before i haven't toucjed this with a wire brush etc

And after

If i was to do it agin i may mix it to be a bit stronger aybe 10% instead of the 5% i used here, but all in all id say its bloody good stuff!! :thumb:
