i wasnt quite sure where to put this thread so i put it in mechanical lol, but does anyone know of anywhere close to crewe which will roll my rear arches? well within driving distance, or should i buy an arch roller then sell it when i'm done? because i'm guessin i will only use it once  thanks

Would have been better placed in styling...

I'm sure 99% of bodyshops would do it for you for a reasonable amount (£30-£50 per arch) depends if you are confident of doing it yourself. If you take it to a bodyshop, try and get recommendations of good ones first.

Also, bear in mind if you DIY it to heat up the paint whilst doing it otherwise the paint will split/crack promoting rusty arches (if not already lol)

Hope that helps.

Its done when you have large/wide wheels and/or you have lowered your car. The original rear arch lip is like an L shape and quite often the tyres will scrub this lip so to create a bit of space the bottom lip is folded up (or rolled).

This way is much better than just grinding the lip off as that is more likely to promote rust. Also rolling the arch maintains some of the arch's strength.

Arrrhhh my dad once baught a 3 door for a winter runner and that use to rub the rear arches as it had large wheels therefore he got the gud old pic ax handle out :thumb:

while i am here has anyone got any idea what size the largest wheels i could comfortable fit on a mk1 5 door hatch ???

cheers

Wheels 6.5" wide with an of ET49 (offset) are best.

I'm not sure on a 5 door as the arches are different and I'd imagine able to manage bigger wheels, maybe 17"

IMO 16" are the ideal size as they don't look too big or small and handling will still be good.

Proper wheels wont need any mods, but if you have to grind some of the lip, not past the welds, treat the bare metal so it wont rust.

ive already started tappin the arch lip up manually with a hammer and a block of wood, do you think i should carry this on? or is it better to get it done proffesionally?

Depends if you're confident you can do a good job of it lol

That way is ok, just make sure you warm the paint up otherwise it WILL crack/split.

On my old Nova I used a hammer to start with and then carefully used some mole grips (obviously protect bodywork from the jaws) which I found worked really well.

Its easier grind some of the lip off it that will give you enough clearence.

Will 6 1/2 X 15 alloys with a 46ET fit under the arches of a Mk1 Nova without any mods?

Cheers

To be honest even some sets of et49 6.5x15's will rub depending on tyres, Hagger's SR with cavvy slabs and 195/45x15's rubbed on the lip.

arch rolling always has the risk of paint chipping of. no shop wil give a garantee on that. if you have once restored the arches with some kind of filler, this also will chip off.

my rear arches have enough clearence for et25 7x14, and i can fit wider wheels.
