Those bored of my 'post trackday reports' the back button it the top left of your screen lol

In my usual style, got to Donington Park around 7am, to 'set up shop', got a pit aside ben21 (VS), signed on in 'advanced' session at 7:45am, as it was a sessioned day, had our briefing at 8:30am and things got underway at 9am with the first session (novice for 20mins, then intermediate from 20past, till 20to, then advanced, 20to, to the hour)

First time out with my new rear 450lb rear springs in situ, and first session was mega wet due to standing water over the previous night, so I came armed with my Rainsports, I also bought my 888s along just in case...

First lap out, with Michelle as passenger... we had realised I'd not altered my suspension back from Curborough Sprint which means the rears were on 24 out of 28 clicks hard, along with 450lb springs lol, and the fronts on 20... along with the too hard shockers, my rear end was still wayyyy too low creating understeer in abundance.

Almost got wiped out by a Carrera which overtook me going down the Craner Curves, but I was holding him, and the other 2x GT3 RS Porsches up... so I came in a little miffed... oh well, opening session, 6 more to do...

I knew exactly what needed to be done in order to get it back to handling as it should, so we raised the rear 15mm, softened the rear shocks down to 9clicks out of 28, as I now have the 450lb'ers at the back to help out, I left the front heigh alone, but softened them down to 10 clicks.

Went back out the hour later, 10:40am, this time with Rob Hirst as passenger, and it was a complete transformed car, the changes we made really brought out the rear spring poundage advantages, knocking around six seconds of our lap time, which was corking... still on the Rainsports at this point, however it was damp, but with a dry racing line - so I made the decision that for the next session to arm the car with 888s, however on the last but one lap, I noticed my oil pressure gauge had gone off the scale (full max, not full min) so not wanting to risk anything we came in, to find the wire to the sender had got caught and ripped in half, so replaced the wiring, and whilst the car was up - put the 888s on

On the 11:40am session, I took out Michelle again, with exactly same setup as the previous session however with added 888s with tyre pressures of 23 (cold) at front, and 17 (cold) at rear, it was another blinding session - apart from when I started to get hesitation coming out of corners... again (previously at Donny I was getting this, pre-swirl pot), very odd, as my swirl pot is in place, it says I have half a tank left (i should have clicked at this point, that no way would I have got 3 sessions (read 1 hour at nigh 7k rpm) from 17quids worth of petrol) so we came in from that session early, and went across to the onsite petrol station that was selling Super for less than garages do @ £1.20 a litre... bargain... told him to fill up the tank, expecting to pay around £10-12, seeing as I had half a tank left... up up up it went... £36 please... ahhhh, so my gauge is reading dodgy, and I was out of fuel, hence the hesitation... so back to a full tank

Session before lunch, 12:40pm, ben21 was passenger, only slight adjustment that now the track was drying out, was to stiffen the suspension a little bit, was I was getting quite a bit of body roll, but not too much to hinder the traction, so I raised the clicks allround by 4, and a full tank of fuel... all hesitation gone - awesome lap...

1pm - 2pm - stopped for lunch, was absolutely knacked

Session after lunch, 2:40pm, nova ian as passenger, again, left the car untouched, but just upped the stiffness of the suspension again by 3 clicks allround, so rears were now on 15, and fronts on 16, I also upped the tyre pressures of the 888s as Mike had noticed how much they were rolling under the lip of the rim under hard cornering, so I did, and it made an improvement... less squealage, more speed :thumb:

Session number 5, 3:40pm, again - left all suspension alone, however I felt the brakes had been taking a battering going from 130mph down to 30mph in the space of a hundred yards or so every lap lol But again, towards the end of the session, again I was getting this hesitation again which was royally pishing me off because I know when my fuel tank is low, as my Facet becomes much noisier from not picking up fuel, thus not filling swirl pot - but this wasn't happening. Rather annoyed that every time we hit the craners, and redgate, and the chicane I wasn't getting full acceleration out of the corners... so we came in a lap or two early again... must be out of fuel again...

I only had 1 session after that left, I decided to give it a miss as I'd already had a fantastic day... what bothers me is... my fuel gauge has always read accurate, and I got home (40 miles) without a problem on the fuel that was left, and my facet is still quiet, which means its still pumping fuel from my tank, upto my swirl pot...

Oh well - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... maybe my standard Nova GSi fuel pump can only take 4.5bar / 62psi for so long?

Thanks for reading... vids will be done over the weekend

Excellent writeup as always.
Sounds like another great day.

Weird about the fuel problems, an incar fuel pressure gauge would be handy to see if pressures dropping off when the hesistation happens.
Might be the pump dying, but bear on mind C20let's run the same spec pump as standard....

Great day, big thanks to you mr Olly for the passenger ride, and thanks to Michelle for keeping Kat company... Although by the sounds of it mate they've been plotting against us with words like 'kitchen' and 'bathroom' lol

Can't believe how well that nova goes, just seems to find so much grip and handles really well, hope mines half as good!

Thanks to Ben21 aswell if you read this!! cheers for the passenger ride with you too mate:thumb:

Brilliant day had a right laugh, Good to see you got some pics with the tweedle dum helmet in the car! you know you love it!!lol lol lol

Cheers for the parts too Olly:thumb:

What a brilliant day!!!!!

My first proper track day and I can't wait for the next one.

Our day didn't start out so great, i managed about 5 miles on the motorway before we had to pull over on the hard shoulder due to a strange noise coming from the engine bay which seemed rev related. However whilst inspecting the car for said noise, I stumbled across the fact the my nearside front wheel had a small amount of play in it. Confused, as neither myself of Mike (MikeR33) could find the culprit to either problem we continued at about 65mph to Donington.

On arrival Mike suggested slacking the alternator belt off a touch (strange rev related engine noise) and Olly suggested checking the castle nut on the driveshaft for the wheel play, bingo!

With the issues solved there was nothing left to do but get some track time in.

Overall, im really chuffed the performance of the car, brakes were excellent, handling was predictable with oversteer and understeer available if needed! I was also amazed by the durability and grip offered by the Toyo T1-S(or is it R, whichever the new one is anyway!) Despite me throwing everything myself and the car had at them, i reckon they would be good for another track day easily!

I would like to think that of the 25ish cars out in my session i was in the top 10 quickest (I was in Novice). Hopefully some onboard video footage will confirm this!!!!!

Pics and Vids soon hopefully!

P.S Good to meet you Ian and Rob, also big thanks to Olly for passenger ride and use of video camera, Superstar!

Ahhh Phil, the MK3 Astra on a trailor, was it a black GSi? saying that, it had a reg plate on etc... so assumed it was road legal?

Again, in my usual post trackday analysis... here are my laptimes from my sessions all bar the first one...

Knocked 4 seconds off my previous best, so I'm happy with that :thumb:

Great right up Olz, pleased that the geometry tweeks have made such a difference for you :)

Slightly suprised your not lapping faster than that though or is that due to the fuel issues ?

Was the holding back only mid corner ? if so I'd imagine its not the pump as that shouldn't really affect it, is the fuel system plumbed in as per the SBD guide ?

If you need a pump I have one although I think I remember you saying you have one in yours spares package :)

Look forward to seeing the vids mate

trackdaynova
30-05-08, 09:55 PM
Yeah, I have a standard Nova GSi pump in my spares, along with that Cossie pump I bought from you and the billet alloy filter...

The hesitation was on the exit of Redgate, exit of the Craners and exit of the chicane at the end of the Dunlop straight coming onto the main straight.

No mate, that laptime wasn't with fuel problems

Jonlem
30-05-08, 10:32 PM
Does very much sound like fuel starvation doesn't it, weird.

Does the fuel return from the fse to the swirl pot or tank ?

I'd probably stick that 941 pump in there when your next working on it

trackdaynova
30-05-08, 10:42 PM
From the FSE, it returns to the very top of the swirl pot...

Adam Moran
30-05-08, 10:44 PM
Excellent stuff Olly!

Shame i live so far away otherwise i would have been up to watch

Jonlem
30-05-08, 11:30 PM
From the FSE, it returns to the very top of the swirl pot...

I do them so that the very top of the swirl pot returns to the fuel tank, the fse returns to the top fitting, the facet feeds the middle one and the inj pump gets its feed from the bottom.

This means the swirl pot is always full and constantly running off that and not ever the fuel tank.

I was told to do it this way but here is the diagram from SBD

http://www.sbdev.co.uk/Info_sheets/Fuel_injection%20_Set_up_instructions/1.6-1.4%20Taper%20Instructions%20Print%20ALL/16_14_swirl_pot.gif

30-05-08, 11:47 PM
Thats how he has it plumbed (so long as he listened to me lol)

Sounded like a great day olly :) Need to pull my finger out and come up to do a donny day with you!

Jonlem
31-05-08, 12:15 AM
The return from the fse is at the very top on Ollys and the return to the tank is one of the ones on the side, just looked at a pic on his thread.

Possibility that its surging as it only using half of the swirl pot ?

Adam
31-05-08, 12:19 AM
Could be....
As the facets filling half the tank, and its then draining back out the return instead of fully filling the tank.

But he hasn't had the problem before i dont think?
And hes done a far few other events

Lee
31-05-08, 12:21 AM
I wouldn't imagine the two returns making a difference if theyre back to front, he should still have the swirl pot 90% filled at all times.

I cant imagine there's fuel pressure dropping off on corners either. although, which way is the pump mounted, side to side or front to back?

It might be worth checking the wiring/earth to the front pump in case its disconnecting periodically. Could also be a loose connection somewhere else.

Jonlem
31-05-08, 12:51 AM
Pumps mounted side to side, loose connection is definately a possibility, wasn't there once a similar problem with the inj pump that turned out to be a wiring issue ? could also be something to do with why the fuel guage isn't working correctly either.

Anyway its late and I've had enough of talking wiring for one day LOL its the weekend and I plan to stay as far away from cars as possible lol

Get those videos sorted Olz ! :)

dhdev (Oli)

So the rear springs helped then? It certainly seems to be cornering flatter in the pics :)
A smallblock engine would solve the fuel starvation problem as they don't use enough fuel to get starvation lol

Adam
31-05-08, 03:07 PM
Id be checking wiring too, on both pumps.
It would take quite a while to run that swirl pot low enough to be getting misfires/hesistation, and i dont see that happening in a corner around Donny.

I've just had a look, and this I how I have it plumbed in...

I'm now thinking that my return from FSE to swirl pot could have been getting crushed by the airbox... but its doubtful

Jonlem
31-05-08, 03:56 PM
Its ok Adam, I know someone building a equally insane small block nova which will probably make me realise my mistake, but for now its a big block only world.

Lee's will be mentally fast though with the power he has

Jonlem
31-05-08, 03:58 PM
Olz, as said on page 3, it should be returning to the tank from the very top but even plumbed in your way its still running on over 2/3 of the swirl pot so I can't see why that would be a problem.

Have you checked the wiring ?

trackdaynova
31-05-08, 04:00 PM
Not sure where to start on checking it, as it was only intermittant on the three said corners... I can always remove and replace, and clean up the earths on the injection pump, and on facet?

Still not got my two fuel pump switches on my dash relayed, as I'm unsure how to do it...

Basically, use your current switch to switch the relay.
Best switch the earth to the relay in my opinion.

Wire the top side of the relay up to either a perm live, or ign live(depening if you want the pump to work with ign off or not), best with an ignition live.

Then, a thick red to the battery to one side of the relay, and the other side to the pump +(the relay joins these two when you flick the dash switch)

Fuse the live to the pump too if you want.

Dodgy piclol

Jonlem

The battery live should also be fused but essentially that is correct.

Use this link so you know what goes where on the relay :

I use the Durite relays which never seem to fail.

Switch 12v to the pump?

Yus, and the live is coming from the ign, which apparently I shouldn't have either...

So if I go out now and switch my pumps on, nothing will happen until I turn my ign on, then they'll both start wurring away...

You could just connect the wire you have going to the pumps atm to "86" on the relay.
And the others as shown in the pic Jb posted.

That would work fine

Thanks:)

As for handling, I was fairly suprised how well it did handle to be fair. I was only running toyo T1-Rs yet I had a fair amount of grip & tbh they could do another 1 or 2 track days I reckon. Was able to throw the car into the corners at a fair speed and just balance the throttle so as not to get too much understeer, was also getting a bit of nice controlled over steer too, as Olly will confirm;) :D :p

trackdaynova
31-05-08, 04:51 PM

You did excellent mate - next time we'll do an open pit (possibly evening) so we can go out together, to get some external footage etc...

ben21
31-05-08, 04:57 PM
Lol yeah it was, up until then i'd been quite tidy into the old hairpin as initially that part of the track scared the sh*t out of melol Felt like a BIG moment but on the video it was barely a flick:roll:

Car looks good Ben, I've always believed the hype about Astra not handling but I drove a reasonably specced turbo one round the ring last year and I was shocked how well it handled. 9.10 without trying that hard showed they have a lot of potential !

Just watched the vids and I have to say it was a pleasure! Good lines, good track manners and a lovely sounding engine :thumb:

I was willing you on when you were chasing the Z4, but when his vanos kicked in yo, round redgate you didn't stand a chance lol :p

I take it that the noise in some of the tighter corners was your front arch clearance probs? The only negative feedback was that you seemed to enter the chicane at goddard's a little to fast, (without starting the usual debate) it may be bigblock induced understeer though.

Also very jealous of the fact that you can go flat out down the pit straight without fear of noise issues, I always have to use part throttle, think I may have to go the airbox route. And the gearbox is a treat too! I barely touch fifth in mine and bog down in third out of goddard's (necessary for noise tho). So a quaife SCCR box is on the cards for this year ;)

Adam

COol vids.
You were flying in that last session

The noise deffo sounds like the 888s rubbing somewhere.

trackdaynova
02-06-08, 06:01 PM
Cheers for the comments, I was generally happy with how the day went, although I wasn't enjoying the fuel starvation problems, considering I've not experienced them before, since having my Swirl setup.

Oli - was entering the chicane way too fast on occasions, usually trying to out-brake whoever was in front of me lol but it was my first outing with the quickrack, so I felt my self steering too much into a corner, then realising it was too much lock, so I'd take some off again, and so on...

Towards the end of the day, it'd just be one set turn, and I'd follow through with that.

The noise, I'm not sure about, I was more thinking rear arches, but Adam has just pointed out that it only happens in the session with my 888s, I can't personally hear the noise when I'm in the car with the helmet on, and I never drive it that hard around corners on the road to hear it without a helmet. The same noise can be heard on the Rockingham vids! and on Sprint in car vids lol

Noise is no longer an issue, it is a thing of the past (hopefully) now with my driveby a measly eighty something decibels I'm well happy, might even go back to Bedford for another trackday there also.

First things first, is to book an open pit evening at Donny :thumb:

On Starkies straight (Dunlop) I was hitting 4th limiter (117mph) then half way up to 5th limiter (134mph) so circa 125mph before braking and downchanging (thank god for Quaife strong built boxes) right down to 2nd gear...

I'm in 2nd for Goddards Chicane which has a limit of 79mph, up to the limit, then to 3rd limit @ 99mph, then 4th goes up to 117mph, but then I'm back down to 3rd, for Redgate.

See mine is good for 130mph in 4th! So most of the time I'd drop to fifth on Starkies to save the engine a bit of stress. And my 2nd gear is only good for 67mph meaning I was needing 3rd (good for 101mph) through the chicane. I'm definately adding a quaife gearkit to the shopping list!
What FD are you using?

Great write up, does feel like am there. Sounds like you have a good day.

Big thanks to MikeR33 who did some external footage...

Really disappointed with lack of noise, but I suppose that was the result I wanted :( lol however the gearbox sounds extra cool now

The airbox/system have helped a lot, where noise is concerned then.

At least you still get the box noise

trackdaynova
04-06-08, 07:40 PM
Yeah certainly did, but my next Donny day I'll run without the airbox lol

It's not all wasted, as when I go to other tracks where it is one strike and our - i'll keep the box on.

Saying that, I would have been getting more cold air with the box on, than without - as there would be no engine temperatured air going in :thumb:

When is your open pit Donny evening? as I might book on :)

Adam
04-06-08, 07:52 PM
Ive not booked it yet mate.

Theres a few available.
A July 4th(fri) evening, but its a novice session.
7th July evening, normal open pit.
Or 18th July, evening, open pit

Im definently booking one, but not decided which yet.

trackdaynova
04-06-08, 08:14 PM
Not doing the 4th, if its Novice...

So we have Monday 7th, or Friday 18th

Let me know, and myself and ben21 will come too.

I might even just turn up this coming Monday evening (day after PV, and the day I'm having my geometry done at PV) lol

Adam
04-06-08, 08:20 PM
Lol.
I dont mind, date wise. All the same price anyways.

OR, 28th July(a while away)
But additional drivers/passengers are only a pound each

That sounds good, altho only 2 drivers and 2 passengers per car is crabby, I'd sooner ask people to pay the full whack and have more passengers tbh :)

Adam
04-06-08, 08:23 PM
Ok mate, 7th/18th/28th.

See whatever you and Ben21 are interested in doing :)

Iainel should be coming too

trackdaynova

As will nova ian, as passenger with me :thumb:

I'll text gay21 now :D
