I've been working out my running costs, and managed to come out with an mpg figure of around 38, driving sensibly, mainly dual carriageways. Does this sound right? I was expecting it to be around half that.

When I had my black 1.2 I managed a max of about 45mpg when I was properly skint and nursed her on a long run.
Worst case was 17mpg doing 3 miles a day in the middle of winter (choke full on etc lol)

mid 30's sounds about right for a well maintained normally used 1.2

Anything over 30mpg is very good for a carb engine IMO.

my first nova with the homemade 1.4 (rebored 1.3) & std 1.2 carb assy, filter & cam, but with a 4-2-1 manifold & a f10 4 speed 3.74:1 box returned 35mpg over a year (1993) & I drove it hard all the time. I got bored with having a petrol book & stopped checking after the year was up

Sorry for the hi-jack, but I don't want to start another thread for this lol ...

What sort of miles should I expect form a Nova 1.0 carb? I'm on 285 miles on the current tank of petrol, first half was standard, and easily driven, the second half has been more enthusiastic and with a K&N? Its almost empty.

my 1.2 does 40 - 45 mpg.

worst I've had is around 34mpg.

Even in winter when im driving on a dual carrige way i put the choke down. Only when I come to a stop and the engine is still cold do I pull it up to let it idle at normal idle speed ~900rpm.

Mine has K&N too

with what you have quoted of 285 miles on a full tank of 9.2 gallons thats approx 30mpg.

for a 1.0 I would have expected a bit more but as you said you did some spirited driving.

I'm gonna try to stretch the 300 out of it!

Gonna limit myself to 2500 rpm on the next tank methinks, its drinking a bit! Also I should have added, quite a bit of this tank has been used around town (start/stop).

Cheers man!

Yeh town driving sucks stop start traffic aint good but its unavoidable.

Just drive it normally no hard revs and see what your next tank is like. That will give you a good idea.

38mpg is qouted by GM as daily driving running cost for a GTE

My tuned 1.4 was giving about 38-40 if driven only on the first choke of the 32/34 around town or at a steady 60, on full-bore thrashes to scunny and back it did get as low as 15mpg though!

^ 41 - 43mpg

Just looking at the Nova manual and at 56mph 54mpg is expected from a 1.2 carb.

Might try that one day :)

My missus's SRi 16v Cav Ecotec manages about 40 to 43 mpg, but she drives pretty easy. I get 35 mpg of it from hard driving.
