I'm a Quantity Surveyer, I get house/building/industrial plans and price how much it'd cost for goods, services and to build it.
The Celtic Tiger has Died and the Building trade has slowed a lot. So Things are pretty quiet and I'm bored.

I visited co.Mayo in feb & there were loads of empty new houses about.
I am a groundworker, so most of my time is spent falling out with architects, structural engineers & qs's. sometimes I actually get round to building stuff. Maybe its the english qs's but most of them seem to think that pixies will do the work for magic beans.....one recently thought we would do a £2000 paving job for about £400.........
No, thats a QS for you. Although I'm not a Qualafied one, I built my way up from a General Labour job. I loved those days, turning up drunk, smoking 20 Ciggies in a day and barely breaking a sweat!!
As for the Empty houses, they're still selling but the Council seems to buy most of them to house Refugees or ASBO type familys.
Well, either that or the fact it was just Mayo!! LOL

At present I'm an Accounts Assistant above Mitsubishi, Mazda and Volvo but possibly looking to do a paint sprayer/bodywork apprenticeship
Well, either that or the fact it was just Mayo!! LOL
I have to admit that i'd thought co. Kerry was weird until I visited Mayo.....
A couple of years back I was in co Clare & there were builders from London working in Ennis, ironic or what??????
Me & my Brother have to do our own qs work, we get plans thrown at us & we decipher a price from it then we do a site visit to find out what the developer isn't telling us, ie. the 2000ton pile of crap that needs moving or the toxic waste or the traveller camp next door etc... then we modify it to suit. but the actual building work is by far the best bit.
Agreed. I loved it when I was at it. Especially when you're 17 with a fortune of money in your pocket at the Bar on a Student night in a Club!! :D
I'm stuck in retail. Worst sector ever, customers are horrible!
Had the option to do a welding appreticeship, but I turned it down as I had plans to go travelling, and it all fell through.
Am currently trying to decide what I want to do for my career, lol at 19 I have many things I want to do and being indecisive I can't decide!
Whats a job?
All i do is sit on my pc thinking about errr yer.

Right, when you draw a picture of some drains, remember this, some poor sod actually has to dig the holes & fit them.........drain pipes do not bend & downpipes look pants when they pass right down the middle of a window. Building inspectors demand manholes at every change of direction, it is not clever to stick storm drains under someones living room & only 5% of all soakaways actually work properly.
Also we are on to you.... When you draw a plan & don't stick a really important dimension on but put a note on saying 'To be decided on site by contractor' we know the building won't, ever in a million years, fit the plot.
And why do you draw hundreds of plans with the walls on but not one with the dimensions (centre of trench) for the footings?

I work for Caparo AP braking and my Job title is Design Engineer, although that is a bit of a fib as I spend more time testing than designing, and I don't have a degree in Engineering yet so personally I don't think I qualify as an ''Engineer'' yet.
Really pisses me off all the people that walk round with ''Engineer'' titles, a bloke that fixes your leccy is an electrician in my book, not an electrical engineer, I doubt any of them know space-state equations, and a bloke that fixes your boiler is not a heating engineer, do they know anything about thermodynamics or fluid mechanics, do they ****. Just makes a mockery out of those of us that spend years studying at uni :mad::mad:

I dont feel I am a proper engineer (not like Brunel, Watt etc). Yeah I have an engineering degree and I do work designing systems to control engines, but its not real engineering in my book.
Similar to the "software engineers" here..... nooooo they are code monkeys!

i agree with your rant Mr Oli.
didnt know you needed a degree to be a satellite engineer (sky installer who can work a signal meter, terminal driver and masonry drill)
seems now more and more technicians are being referred to as engineers.
people forget that a career in engineering does not make you an engineer.
