Stupid question alert, but remember its my first car/Nova.

Where is the best place to use a trolley jack on the front and sides of a Nova?:O :O :O :O :O

When I changed my disks etc I put it under the control arm, but someone just told me that this will break the arm.

cheers

To be honest anywhere but the sills as even though you can do it here they normally just fall apart. On the front I do the chasis legs and the you can normally get away with the sill or axle depending on what your doing.

Front chassis legs (the chunky bit of metal just behind the wheelarch under the car)

On the rear I always stick the jack under the middle of the rear beam.

Note: the two jacking points vauxhall specified are on the front and back of the sills, identified by a semi circle notch cut from them, but a trolley jack will just crush these. Only use them of your using the standard jack that came with the car.

^^ i only use the back sills if im using a 2 post ramp, normal jacks dont go anywhere near them, good ol novas lol

I cannot use the sills because of the side skirts, although they still allow you to use the standard (crap) jack.

If I use the chassis leg for the jack where is the best place to put the axle stands, because I normally put them there??

So is this guy right then, don't use the control arm?

He's right, it puts exrta stresses on the bushes, plus its not a flat surface so the jack would slip off.

Put the axle stand on the front chassis rail which runs forwards from that point. Ill try to find a suitable pic..

Here you go..

Thanks for the pic Lee. As I said thats where I put the axle stand but its not big enough to use the jack there and then the axle stand.

I jack the front of mine up on the tie bar mounts and put an axle stand where Lee has his in the above pic.
Rear gets jacked up on the rear axle and axle stands on the axle or rear sills.

LOL, we're getting our wires crossed. The pic above is the idea axle stand point, the ideal jack point is on the underside of the car, just back from the above point. You will see a thick piece of metal running from the chassis leg to where the wing bolts onto the bottom of the car and the forward factory jacking point is.

Need a pic, 2 secs..

Thanks iainel but one end is connected to the control arm and the other seems a bit weak, so would'nt that be just as bad as using the control arm?

Well I jack it on the mount itself which is attached to the front panel, not the tie bar itself. If that were to rip off I'd prefer it did it when jacking it up and not driving tbh lol

Magic Lee:thumb: , I understand exactly what you mean now. And thanks very much for going to all the trouble to help me with a question that must sound stupid to 99.9% of you.

I have done all the work with the help of a Haynes manual, but for some reason it does not cover anything but the standard jacking points.

Thanks again mate:)

Might be worth adding the rear points onto a pic too, and putting that in the Articles section..... :)

I agree with Adam, even if you cannot show the rear beam I am sure the pic and a few words will help others (like me) in the future:)

As for the rear beam, I jack up (at the sides) just behind either wheel & put an axle stand under the chassis legs either side of the fuel tank (very much like the fr position Lee showed)

Seeing as my car has spent the last year or so going up & down the axle stands like a YoYo, it'd be rude not to help.

This may help a little..
