Do you get the "rat look" ?

I'm planning the nova for after PV when i can actually take some time and do her properly and looking at rat look, euro etc.

Before somebody moans and calls me gay my nova is not going in that direction at all but i wanted to know peoples views on "rat" as its becomming ever more popular.

I think most peoples views would be "it's a mess" etc, Is this strictly a dub thing and should stay with our german friends?

i've seen kayles Rat nova and kinda like that too, If anybody has ever been to a vw show there are some smart Rat style mk1 golfs mk2 golfs etc and they really do suit it well.

At the moment i'm looking into porsche wheels but the design 90's have been put on everything, Borbet A's, ronal Turbo's have been done loads as well.

Same as BBS splitties but they are just porn I've not even sprayed my car yet and i'm planning on re-doing it lol

A euro/rat hybrid U.K nova would rock! It's about time we saw some more opel/vaux european cars done overhere, they're really fresh and full of new ideas that prove you don't just have to have super clean paint and big wheels.
BBS or cookie cutters would look superb on any rat car imo.

Just googled the rat look/ hoodride thing and think it works well on vauxhall's too plus like Kyall says spray cans is all you need for a repair not an expensive body shop bill!!!

I love rat look too. All the best ones I've seen have been VWs but I think that's just because they try it the most.

Think of how nice it'll be to own a car and not have to worry about dings and scratches when you leave it! lol

If done well they can look 'ok' but manly look like really badly maintained cars. It's like the polar opposite to body kits.

I dont want to go as extreme as the above car at all i'm thinking fully "functional" smooth which has pretty much already been done, low low low with some uber wide split rim 16's. Arches will obv be flared out to stop the ole scrubbage. The paint work will still be very tidy, in my opinion it would work better on a loon than a hatchy and nobodys really that ****d about loons :P

I like it -makes a change from the usual styling ideas which have for the most part been done to death. Lets face it Novas have a chav reputation and this kind of takes that fact to its logical conclusion.

IMO if you are going to do it dont just part do it though.

I love the rat look and my next one will be pointed even more towards euro/rat that the saloon is now, IMO the mk1's suit rat much better than the mk2's and the look is only successful when applied to certain cars thats why the early golfs look good.

I say do it but think carfully about what mods you choose (obviously) as subtley is the key!

the rat and euro look only works if done very well and dont go putting any old crap on it like that astra needs to lose the yellow lights and lose the fog lamps and putting a bit of salt water to make the rust darker

I think its totally stupid to take a good car and wreck the paintwork on it. If you really want this 'rat look' start off with a car thats already rusty and a mess, it'll look more realistic that way and you won't be destroying its value.

I'm not into this but would be interested to see something that's been stripped to bare metal, poured with some water (for surface rust) then laquered. Think the VW on page 1 has the bonnet like that.

I like rat look, but only NATURAL rat look, the proper way. Rat look is all about having a perfectly good chassis/engine/running gear etc and then just leaving the body to rot/get bashed. It came from the rat rod scene in america, where poor guys into hot rods couldnt afford to spunk loads of money on the shells like the richer kids, so left them and created a whole new style
Things like that mk5 golf just look sh*t, its trying to be something its not

My dads car 'was' a proper rat look car then. It had a few 'incidents' around Combe and he had repaired it, so that it was sound but it wasn't tidyed up. It even featured in Fast Ford (I think) with the caption 'We liked the look of this ratty Escort'lol

Although I told him that it looked like a shed and he should tidy it up. So hes resprayed it. Looks very nice now.

I'd personally say that it's pretty lame to Purposly create a RAT looking car. There's no point in it, and it completely defies the original concept.

I'm up for seeing battered cars that have had all their focus and attention put onto the engine, drivetrain, suspension e.t.c and GENUINLY not care about the exterior.

But i get the impression that 99% of the VW scene give a VERY BIG care about how cool it looks.

IMO, rat look is up to anyone that feels the need, however I wont give anyone the satisfaction of standing around some rusty heap at a show, trying to get a peep at what is pretty common down at our local breakers yard.

Its such a shame that people are deliberately ruining sought after & valuable examples of rare cars to satisfy a passing trend.

[edit] only last week I saw a bare metal sanded VW camper. I was miffed by it then it struck me.... future rat! (FFS)

Some cars suit it, that mk3 Astra certainly doesnt though its no loss to the vehicle world if it rusted beyond repair.

Quite what the fascination is with beer kegs & shopper bikes on roof racks is comical. Each to their own but I can't help feel the VW boys are just laughing at everyone copying & striving to make their cars look crap!

I'm torn - most movas have an element of ratiness in them (rear arches etc) but the whole keg on your roof cant be good for the fuel consumption and surely people will be tempted to "add" to it - or try and nick stuff off it.
