I've had a look at Ade's 'How to smooth and spray a bumper' guide but alot of it is focused on how to fill and smooth the lines out of a bumper.

I just want a quick guide on how to prep a bumper ready for paint.

What sand paper do I use and what tools etc.

Also is it ok to spray direct from a can or do I need to use a spray gun?

Cheers, Matt

Prime it well, let it set (24hrs) and then use some Wet and Dry Sand Paper. When Sanding it off, keep the Sand paper soaked with water. This'll leave you with a smoother finish. When its all sanded back and smooth, wipe it all clean with some Panel wipe, then give it a spray.

A spray gun and compresser is a better bet if you can manage it. If your using Spray cans don't try and get every last drop of paint out of them or you'll get splatters everywhere. And when you spray, press on before the area your going to spray, so any start splatter hits the floor instead.
As said above clean up using panel wipe before spraying, its great stuff, and use really fine sand paper on the primer so you don't sand through it.

1200 grit should do the job

Dont use 1200 to prep the bumper, paint wont take well to that.

Start with 500 to get a good key.
Primer that.
Then flat the primer with 800, and then top coat.
