View Full Version : can you appreciate other cars?

Just wondering if people are stricly Vauxhall on here or do they appreciate other cars as well? Noticed it so many times, mainly on the VAG and Mitsubishi forums that they have an inability to like other cars apart from their own marque
have to say ive had quite a few different cars, but in all honesty the ford owners seem to tolerate and appreciate other cars compared to any other forum ive been on

LOL, it made me laugh how blinkered Evo owners are, we bought one and couldnt believe the amount of people who will not accept that there are infact many faster and better cars than an Evo lol lol

I look at most cars and see the potential in them.
I'm partial to VAG and Mitsi.... don't even own a Nova anymore and probably never will again.

That made me chuckle... They have to, any vehicle on the road is better lol
However I am partial to old mk1's, mk2's etc... My mate has a mk1 cortina. I just like things that cool and different!
The nova is just understated and has always had the rep of being a terrible boy racer car!

I'm in utter envy of the following or scene VW & FORD boys have. The best magazines, the most shows & biggest followings.
I used to hate FORDs with a passion but am slowly coming around, however any Cossie if its clean will have me stopped & staring.
Jap stuff doesnt really interest me tbh.
Overall though I'm a petrolhead & love anything thats loud, fast or modified.
its just the narrowminded folks that stick out and make you think the rest of the forum hates anything else lol.
I love driving anything and everything atleast once. If its a crap drive its a crap drive, the rest of the model line up dosent go down in a ball of flames. eg I love the current Fiesta in any form from 1.nothing to the ST185, its a riot to drive.... on the flip side I drove a few of the current 1.8/2.0 TDCI Focus's and Mondeos, Dangerous isnt the word! no power when trying to pull away so it gets scary (simple cal fix would do). I also love messing about in the Transits getting them sideways etc.
All cars have potential before youve driven them........ its once you get out that you can then form the opinion to love/hate it lol.

Agree on the TDCI's Stu. Far too easy to stall. I thought DERVs were meant to have torque?
not the most recent batch of 1.8/2.0 TDCI's ;) they have feedforward launch on them so you can pull away pretty much perfectly by simply lifting the clutch and not touching the throttle..... as soon as you touch the throttle *BLEH* it all goes missing till all of a sudden you get it ALL in one hit lol.
I've told work I refuse to drive those cars as they arent safe. Soon the expensies claims for milage on my car should make them get better ones lol

i'm a vauxhall lover for the simple reason i grew up as a kid when my dad worked at the ellesmere port factory building the mk2 astras so we've always had vauxhalls in the family.
i still like other cars though, my old clio 16V was soooo much better than a nova it was unbelievable, quicker and actually went round corners lol
still undecided as to what car to get next..........
106 rallye
golf gti
saxo vts
nova
astra gte
vw beetle
vw camper
old mini
corrado
i like anything thats cool and/or fast but i'll always have a soft spot for vauxhalls

Golf GTI! FTW!
I love um!
Have to agree with you about the VAG boys, I come from that scene, and part of the reason I was put off them was due to the attitude of the people in general (obviously Im not tarring them all with the same brush, but the percentage was very high!)
I think the Vauxhall scene is completely flip sided lol, especially if you visit MIG from time to time, a large amount of their user base dont own a Vaux any more, but stick around because the community is so good to be a part of. Quite a few on here dont own a Nova either!
Im definately not strictly Vauxhall, but I always seem to end up with one of some sort or another, It probably because ive got to know them mechanically so well, so i dont have that feeling of not knowing what the feck is going on under the bonnet!
i'm a vaux fan, but a old beetle or golf mk1, there high on my list to

ditto... I had a brief fling with a few pugs and they were hateful to work on and would randombly fix/unfix themselves... atleast a vauxhall tells you its hurting, gives you stacks of notice then when it does finally break its not as bad as you expected and you dont hate it for that lol.
Ive managed to do 20K on a heavily worn balljoint and nothing was awry when changing it lmao I bet a pug would have done 20yrds before exploding

must say the current crop of turbo desiel vauxhalls are like that.
my brother has a 06 plate vectra 1.9cdti and my dad has an 08 plate 1.3cdti corsa, they are just plain dangerous. pull out of a junction with a small gap and you get nothing, then 2 seconds later..........whoosh.....all the power comes in. its like driving a hairdryer with a massive nitrous hit!

Sounds ominously like Merc Sprinter traction control lol. Instead of regulating the power to stop wheelspin, it just removes all the power completely, leaving you stranded in the middle of the road till the computer resets itself!
oh but of course "its what the market wants".....:wall:

I've been victim of that years ago. Cannot believe they havent rectified it yet. Actually makes you sh*t your pants if you think you need to boot it away at a junction, let alone actually decide to do the manouvre.

LOL. Thats exactly my issue with French cars. They just surrender when something isnt right. Vauxhalls will plod on for thousands of miles & just knock or have more 'play' in a component than it should do. Thats why the old models are so tough.

i have to admit the ford shows are massives, i cant wait til we get another Cossie, the admiration they get from general members of the public is fantastic, when old men stop you and say " i remember these when they first came out " gives you such a buzz.
Heres our old one..... broke it for parts in november and gonna get another one in the very near future..

didnt stuff it no, rebuilt engine with higher spec, ported head and t4 turbo, and whilst being set up on rollers it went bang.
mainly down to the fact that the machine shop we used machined the pistons to the bores so they had less piston slap ( common in a 2wd saff ) which in turn meant that the piston - bore tolerances were too tight and it nipped up on no3 whilst being set up
managed 1 run at 405bhp ATW, so would have been fantastic, just decided enough was enough as had spent a lot of money that year, broke it for parts as was worth a lot more in bits....
will have another one sooon though ;)

I like older cars, early Fords like Capris, Mk1/2 Escorts and Fiestas, VW Mk1 Golf, Beetle, Camper, Scirrocco, MK2 Toyota MR2. Lots of cars I'd like to have, but I've only got room for one, and I'm not getting rid of the nova.
Definitly have a fondness for Vauxhalls though, MK1 and 2 Astras are great, Chevettes, Manta, Some of the Opel cars are lovely, can't remember their names though.
I can appreciate a 1967 gt 500 mustang, or a dodge charger, but unfortunatly they are out of my price range, so i'll just stick with my nova :)

I seriously hate french cars, mainly because they are truely shocking to work. Its like when they designed them they went " lets make sure no one can ever work on these again"
VW generally build quite nice cars with stupid power but never drive them just toss them selves off at how shiny they are. If you ever want to get lots of 1/4 mile track time go on a VW show date as no one will be using the track.
At least vauxhall owners build their cars an use them for what was intended. And yes im fully aware that I and all the other vauxhalls got spanked by a mk2 golf last year at TOTB lol.

For funking years (back to the old 8vers atleast) when I was about 8 & my bro had Cavs & Astras. Vauxhalls always had strong engines. My Bro used to own his mates that all had FORD Sierra 1.6's in his 1600 Cav's. The 1300 was an absolute gem of an engine too. I remember going camping with him & mates in a 1300 Astra, it was so much quicker than his mates Rover 213 with only 1 passenger.
If I moved marque it would be to a VW I think. Not much else appeals if I'm honest.
Ive had allsorts, but only really "got into" the VW scene, had 2 polo`s and a golf. I now own an early mk2 golf and Mk1 nova, i just like 80`s cars  my next car WILL be an S1 RST :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

LMAO, we must be talking OLD old Fords, as during the end of the 80's and through the 90's, Ford produced some utter CRAP. Myself and my mates worked out that their engines were about 200cc down on most other cars of the era IE a 1600 Escort would just be able to keep with a 1400 of another marques similar car (The CVH was just truely DIRE).

Though on the flipside of that, the 2wd Cosworth was produced in 1988 after the 3dr cosworth, which didnt have any good strong competition at the time.
And yes the CVH is/was shocking, although quite easy to get decent power out of these days without TOO much work.
Driving an old VW I've gotta say I can't give any other car owner stick because their car is undoubtably better then mine!! lol
The only "type" of drivers I'm not too fond of is BMW drivers (that includes minis) The few that I know are arrogant and think they own the road. Which makes me not want to know any others! (no offence to anyone on here!) Mini drivers think that their car is the shizzle, when all I personally see is a piece of sh*t. lol

Some are sound but generally they think they can barge & tailgate their way to the top. Something else a quick rusty Vauxhall is good for, putting them in their place.

So true! Why is it older FORDs stink when you follow them, they always smell so bad of burning oil & over fuelling. Even when they dont appear to be smokey. Fords are typically rather thirsty on fuel aswell.
A funny example was a few years ago behind my parents house, was 2 different chaps (in seperate houses). One had a H reg Escort 1.4LX & the other had an Astra Starmist or summat on a G reg. To hear both cars trundle past, the Astra had a nice deep purr, almost silent, smooth sound. The Escort would go past & it would sound like a load of scrap metal was being hammered in a tin-pot. Truly miserable by comparison. lol
I'll give anything a go once, i've had loads of different makes from vw, vaux, ren, citroen, nissan, bmw, ford etc.
I like car's as a whole be it driving apperance whatever if it goes well and looks nice it gets thumbs up. However if a car has more filler than your average transit van and fibreglass kits with random ****e all over it i'm not remotly interested and tend to laugh unless it really suits the car and the overall quality of workmanship is top notch but these are few and far between.

food for thought, my octavia vrs is less economical than our 430bhp Cossie ever was ;)
Well varity is the spice of life. I've been fairly fortunate in my realatively short driving carear (5 years). Having driven a fair few iconic cars of the 80's although never a cossie i would recomend an E30 325i Mtec1, Nova GTE and Escort RST S2
The BMW is such a nice everyday car that doesn't have to be driven fast although has an addictive noise. The steering feels so direct and it's as though they were set-up to oversteer direct from the factory. Build quality is very good and they are also easy to work on...all the bolts undo without sheering off, interior plastics don't snap when removing ect. When i'm in a Nova i just feel like i have to pedel it everywhere, i would agree that the early 8v engines are very very strong, above all the nova is one car that i keep coming back to. I blame it on a certain summer not to long ago that was spent wearing out certain back roads. The RST was perhaps my most unreliable car although was the most fun, fighting torque steer out of round abouts plus they give you a certin feeling and to me, much more of a smugness than the BMW. As has been said already Pugs, particulary the 205 GTI are very good fun but are pretty weak, sort of like those re-chargable helicoptors...fun until the first mishap.
Jap cars just don't do it for me, they don't feel the same to drive as Ford/Vauxhall/German equivelent. I don't feel as connected to the car and frankly, they seem to do everything to well and without enough skill. I think that might be my fascination with old cars, you have to work them, you have to fix them, they always want for something and thats why i like them.

My brother is a member of several VAG forums and he's told me several times that the forums suck big time due to the "cliques" that exist. It also seems that no matter how low your VAG is it just isn't low enough in their opinion.
I can appreciate low cars but not at the cost of performance or the fact that your journey to work takes an hour longer because you can only drive down certain roads.

LOL Matt, that's so true! They're also unbelievable anal about standard equipment. A mate of mine bought an absolutely minty mint Golf 16v, which at some point in its life had had the rear lenses changed for the non half smoked items (main difference between an 8v and 16v bar the engine were half smoked rear tail lights and a beesting aerial instead of a wing mounted one).
Nearly EVERYONE on the forum when we posted the pics rekoned it wasnt a real 16v, so we posted an engine bay pic, and they proceeded to preach how much better the 8v was instead, or that it was 'Molested' due to the lenses being changed! It was unbelievable!

I know that on the CVH's the valvetrain is banked, so the stemseals are bathed in retained oil when you turn the engine off.
Apart from creating a Hemispherical combustion chamber, It keeps the seals moist.. . Even though mine is a 30k engine, with regular (little at a time) use... it still smokes on start-up... everytime.
I'd also agree with the fuel, they're much better "cruising" cars than say the Nova GTE/GSi as they sit effortlessly on the motorway. But they're below average on fuel !
Less of the stereotyping for us VAG geeks, you bitches :p lol ;)

Depends on what you regard as better, sure there are more comfortable, faster cars. But nova is special because of the fact its so basic, no fancy gadgets between you and the wheels. Plus my first car was a nova, as I guess it was for a lot of people on here, no matter how good another car is it can't replicate the fondness you have for your first car.
A Renault 5 is incredibly more basic inside then Nova. So are 205's. Mk1 Golf's, so basic there back to the future styleeeee.
My point is, Nova's are that sh1t, there just some how in some funked up way cool?! Hows that work???? And it must just be me the cannot wait to get rid of my Nova habit for a Ford lol lol

quite dangerous! the full car used to vibrate at 50mph!
i have work on some other car vw pug and so on, i hate them so diffclet and just poorly made, even fitting a radio in a fait sucks. vx just same so easy and simple, and engine work is easy really i'd perfure to remove a rear zort manafold on a V^ then a inlet on a TD 306, doing one at the imn
been on going for 2 weeks just finding it impossable to sort.
Vx all the way
Well the nova rattles a bit everywhere but it feels safer at speed than the Ford Focus I (at one point, had a total of 5 lol) learned to drive in, that thing the steering was so light it'd drift side to side without you realising! To be fair, the 2 that I've been in for being over 16 years old and cheap as they are they're not bad cars at all !

Im very vauxhall orientated and so is my whole family.
I own a Nova, dad has a MK3 Cav SEH and used to own a MK2 Cav Sri aswell, Bro has a Cav XEV, Uncle has a MK4 GSi Turbo he used also used to own a MK2 Astra SRi so did my other uncle.
So I have grown up with many Vauxhalls.
Although I am slightly biased towards Vauxhall's I still appreciate other cars, especially older modified cars whatever the make. If the car has been done nicely I will always comment at how nice its been done and respect that car as I can relate to it.
Have driven some newer cars and some have been really nice to drive some I feel arent so good. Driving other cars also lets you appreciate your cars good point and flaws.
Put it this way, If I was rich as well as buying exotic cars Id be pretty tempted in buying a few top end Vauxhall's aswell :)

My uncle used to drive a mix of old Vauxhalls and Fords (proves that you can like 2 makes:thumb: ), like mk2 escorts, mantas, mk1 astras, cavs etc.
But I think I will stick with my Nova as theres very very few on the roads in my County now.

i must say i go for best of both worlds!, i have always got a vauxhall and ford at the same time, at the moment its nova and fiesta mk6, last time it was astra mk1 and ford escort turb, hopefully it will be cossie and gsi next ;)
I like all sorts, although I'm not keen on most French cars, but thats purely due to build quality reasons. Having said that, I do rather like some of the fast 106/205/306's.
I don't think I've had the misfortune to drive a car thats truly awful. Although the derv Focus I had last week was trying its damnedest to be Car From Hell

Ill only get on with cars that i can easily work on.. hence why i am mostly vauxhall blinkered. Can appreciate other peoples efforts in style, mechanical or just a persons efforts in keeping a car looking its best... not so the marques themselves.
LMAO, we must be talking OLD old Fords, as during the end of the 80's and through the 90's, Ford produced some utter CRAP. Myself and my mates worked out that their engines were about 200cc down on most other cars of the era IE a 1600 Escort would just be able to keep with a 1400 of another marques similar car (The CVH was just truely DIRE).
agree with that my mate used to cream my 1600i orion that had a full exhaust filter cam an a chip in a standard 14 sr nova thats what converted me to novas
sayin that i like most 80s hatchbacks and the old 70s fords & vauxs

i like the way nova owners flash eachother, thats cool!
I mainly love late 70s- early 90s Vauxs and VWs. Some newer cars are really awesome too but in a totally different way. I do appreciate- just don't understand them lol

LMFAO there's a quote that could easily be taken out of context lol
I appreciate most motors, Jap, English and French excluded.
Love Big old Audis, Beemers, Mercs and Vauxhalls.
