Can anyone give me a rough guide to changing the Cam belt on my engine please. Ive looked at the Haynes manual and its not clear about the tensioner.

Also, is this an engine with auto or manual tensioner??

I have done belts on an 8v but never one of these so any help please:tard:

Not an auto tensioner in my limited experience if you can compare it to an X20XEV.

The one above the lowest V pulley is the tensioner on mine, it has markings stating where it should be set from either a new or old belt. If you don't have an auto tensioner its a case of adjusting it on the water pump by turning it one way or the other ( pulley is offset in centre).

This is from my experience on my engine so don't shoot me if I'm wrong but it may help none the less.

your xe is the early round tooth setup, it does not ave an auto adjust tensioner. the upper pullet below your cam pulleys is the tensioner..

Aye as above.
Yours has a spring type tensioner

do i need the tool quoted in the haynes manual for tightening up the belt?

No, theres actually a spring that fits between the 2 posts (1 on the tensioner and 1 on the back plate) to tension the belt, best to remove them once the belt is tensioned, heard storys of them popping off and mangling the belt !!
I've got one sitting in the garage if you need one.
Dead easy to change the belt over, just make sure the 3 marks line up ... cant go wrong really !!

Edit: its also worth replacing the rollers as well, as these are also known to fail.

also use new bolts for everything.. you wont be the first with a broken tensioner bolt while driving..

You can use a driver from a socket set on a ratchet to tenssion the belt fella.

As for a belt kit i would get it form vauxhall as comes with the rollers.
It would pay to fit a new water pump at the same time as it's a 5 min job with the engine out and belt off.

Looks to be the right one, as said, best to get a water pump as well, about £30 from TMS.
Not sure on what size the bolts are but if your wanting to change them, pop along to Johnson & Bulman with the old bolts, they should be able to match up some new ones.

I'd price up a GATES kit. They make the kits for GM & Volkswagen. See if its cheaper. Most good factors can get them. Makes sense if Vauxhall want much more.

I just got quoted £82 for my 1600XE cam belt kit.

you use a 3/8 ratchet to tighten the belt, thats what the 3/8 hole is there for...

Different XE belt setups:

IIRC older belts are 141 teeth and newer ones 156 teeth
